Join me in a 2026 retirement countdown

Next year is the year I'm going to hang up my corporate boots and retire and I can't wait. I'll be 57 and I want to finish just before Christmas, none of that arguing over who's going to cover the Christmas period nonsense.

Not really sure when I should let my boss know. I'm on 3 months notice so I guess that's plenty of time.

Anyone care to join me in a countdown?

@loveawineloveacrisp good for you. I'm sure you won't regret it.

The handover or lack of it will be a them problem not a you problem

Exactly. It's not like I didn't give more notice than I was contractually obliged to.

Long time lurker on this thread and have really enjoyed reading about your plans. I'm a bit further away - planning to retire at some point in 2028, when I'll be 57 (seems a popular age on this thread).

Financially, I could probably go now. I was really fed up with work about 3 months ago and thought I'd bring the date forward but have since rediscovered my sense of proportion and am having fun again.

Back to Plan A but I've started planning in earnest now. I have just rebalanced my SIPP and am starting to plan how I will use all that luscious time. Physical health and spending more time with family and friends who live a distance away are my priorities. Oddly, thinking about retirement has also kick started a bit of reorganisation in other ways - e.g. decluttering and weeding out things that no longer work for me.

"planning to retire at some point in 2028, when I'll be 57 (seems a popular age on this thread)."

As someone who always planned to retire at 60 but actually did it at 57, I have my own theory.
We make plans to go at 60, we put finances in place but when we actually start getting near the date we think "sod this....I'm off!" and away we go 😆

So that’s it! Sat in bed with a coffee, keep thinking I should get up, am I WFH or going in today? Nope, neither of those things because from today I am economically inactive & I don’t go to work anymore! 🎉

Join the club!
Ive just returned from my first ever term time holiday. I felt like I was skiving off work 🤣

Viperregency · Yesterday 08:31

I’ve a month left today, eek, I’m so excited, can’t wait to get this month over and done with and hand my stuff back and say bye!

Retiringplans · Yesterday 14:38

Congratulations @rockstarshoes I hope you have done something nice today.
I have no idea when I am going to stop anymore as my Sen young adult has just thrown a huge spanner in to my plans by saying he never wants to travel & go on holiday again. And it feels pointless to stop working if I can't do any of the things I wanted to do.
I am probably just being grumpy & I just need to have a rethink but not what I was expecting in the middle of our holiday

This is spot on for me, except I’d been thinking of 62 and, once we’d done the calculating etc, realised I could go at 60. Am now 3 months in and it is great. Highly recommend stopping work in the summer, as it rather eases you in to the whole thing nicely!

Congrats to those who are free! Less than 3 months now for me and holiday coming up this weekend which is much needed.

Congratulations 🎊 @rockstarshoes

I hope your YO relents or you come up with a new plan @Retiringplans

Congrats to all the newly retired . I've been semi retired a year now and have done odd bits of supply. Not actually worked for 12 weeks and did my first days supply today, nice little school local to me, not hard but I've come home and I'm shattered.

I've been surprised how I've managed on my pension really this past 12 weeks and seriously thinking of finishing completely. It's just a bit daunting pulling the plug on work totally at aged 57 (58 in Feb) and not having that extra bit of money safety net.

Theres 3 weeks until half term and then we go to Thailand and Malaysia until early December- so I'm going to think about it over our holiday.

Id love to just go into school and hear readers or support adults with reading too.

Decisions, decisions.

DemonsandMosquitoes · Yesterday 17:10

I’m down to working one day a week so touching distance now! 13 more shifts to go. My mind is completely out the game tbh.
Flying to Porto tomorrow for a few days.

loveawineloveacrisp · Yesterday 19:39

@BG2015 you're lucky you have something you can dip in and out of when you fancy. I struggle to think what I can do in a similar vein with my work background (senior in financial services). We'll see. I like the idea of a bit of work when I fancy it, without being tied to a contract.
