Just wondering what is "normal".

Hmm, normal, yes I know there is no such thing!

my parents live iuo Northt, we live down south. I try & take dd to visit them about every 5/6 weeks. We last visited in October for nearly 2 weeks, no visit this month as we will be there for Xmas. We speak to them daily by phone & dd speaks to them too.

DH's mother hasn't seen dd since July she lives in Scotland many promises of visits but none this year. Last time we visited she only seen her for a few hours as she was going away for weekend. Will see her between Xmas & New Year as we will be in Scotland. I am hoping when she retires in Jan this will change & she will in position to spend more time with dd.
DH's Dad & His wife visited beginning of October, visit changed from July, to September then to October. They last seen her when we visited in July. We normally stay with them during our visit so they see her more.

If I made more of an effort with PIL's they would see dd more. It would mean me going to Scotland on regular basis which would be expensive.

My mum, once every 2 or 3 weeks. We usually go to her. (40 miles away)

FIL- has seen DD 2 and DS 1 time each. We go to him (400 miles away). So about once every 2 yrs.

MIL- Once a year if we fly her up. Every 2 years if we go to her (400 miles away)

My IL's have other grandchildren aroiund them and so are not interested in mine. They don't even buy them birthday presents. Scumbags.

My mum and dad every week, sometimes staying over for a night at the weekend. Exp's parents, usually just at xmas, sometimes in the summer aswell, they live abroad.

DustyTv · 26/11/2008 08:32

My parents see DD several times a week, they live 5 -10 min drive from us.

MIL once a week, would be less if she thought DH would let her get away with it.
StepFIL, once in a blue moon, but that suits me fine grin]
They live 5-10 min drive from us also.

FIL, has only seen DD a couple of times and she is a year old now, he lives 5 min walk from us. I wont take DD there as there are 4 in the house who chain smoke.

StepMIL, same as FIL.

They all know they are welcome here when they want to see DD, allI ask is for a phone call so that I can make the house at least slightly presentable and also to see if we are actually in. StepFIL once 'told me off' and shouted at me when he had come round but we were not in, like it was some big conspiracy to be out when he came here .

naturalblonde · 26/11/2008 08:34

My mum - every week she comes to visit once a week)

My dad - prob twice a month

DHs dad - about once a month, often less

Dhs mum - hardly ever, she lives a long way away and makes no effort to visit. (Well neither do we, but we have a god reason for it)

shivermetimbers · 26/11/2008 09:52

every bloody damned day.
we have the misfortune pleasure of living across the road from them.

compo · 26/11/2008 09:53

my parents live 3 hours drive away, about 4-6 times a year
dh's parents live 6 hours away - again about 4-6 times a year

oopsiedoopsie · 26/11/2008 09:54

My mum: once a week, maybe twice if we have some free time, shes busy with my sisters kids mostly

Inlaws: 3-4 days a week as they are our free childcare atm

LouieStrumpet · 26/11/2008 09:57

We live in a different country to both sets of grandparents so once a year when we go there or they come here.

Otherwise it's webcam and phone.

cookinmama · 26/11/2008 09:59

my mum: once or twice a month as she is 60 miles away
pils: 3 or 4 times a week as they live next door
my dad: once every couple of years as he thankfully lives about 3000 miles away

mrstumnus · 26/11/2008 10:08

My mum - about three times a week because she lives ten minutes away - although she often says with a sigh that she "never sees" us
In laws - 3-4 times a year as they thoughtfully live abroad half the year

SmileLikeYouMeanIt · 26/11/2008 10:09

My mum: on average 3 times a week, I work 7 hours on an "as and when" basis so she minds them, plus she works part time so we tend to do stuff in the afternoons.
My dad: on a sunday, but if he's off work then sometimes a little more as he joins my mum.
PILs: DH takes DCs round for a few hours on a Saturday, they probably babysit once or twice a month too.
Thay all live within 10 mins drive, are fab (espc my mum) and I am very lucky and appreciative of them

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/11/2008 10:11

My nana collects DD1 from school every monday and has her for sunday dinner. My mum has both DDs about twice a week and DD2 see's mil once a week, DD1 less often due to her dancing but its still more than a few times a month.

All of the gp's apart from my mum cannot 'handle' DD2 unless I am there to help out so she see's them less than DD1 does.

maggottinfestedbodybag · 26/11/2008 10:12

once a week or fortnight

bozza · 26/11/2008 10:13

It generally averages out at about once a fortnight with each set. ILs are about 1 hour away, mine are about 1.5 hours away. Sometimes it can be more often - eg if there is a family event or over Christmas - and it can be bigger gaps over the summer when holidays overlap or whatever.

more · 26/11/2008 10:23

DH's side - on average 6-8 times a year.
My parents - never.

abraid · 26/11/2008 10:26

One set--every six weeks.

Another set--once every four months.

CaptainKarvol · 26/11/2008 10:30

About every 4-6 weeks for each set, so we see one lot or another every 3 weeks or so.

Both sets live about 90 miles away but in different directions.

I wish we could see them more often. Either set. The ILs are great and my parents too. DS (2.9) often asks to see granny and grandad.

bertiebear · 26/11/2008 10:32

My parents (100 miles away) come down every 3 weeks for 2-3 days.

MIL lives local and see her a couple of times a week.

Makes me realise how lucky we are!

scorpio1 · 26/11/2008 10:33

PIL have NEVER met dd who is 7 months. they live 200 miles away

We see my parents about once a week.

scorpio1 · 26/11/2008 10:33

ds1 sees his fathers parents twice a week.

compo · 26/11/2008 10:34

why don't you take ds there if that's not too nosey?!!

compo · 26/11/2008 10:35

ds and dd

scorpio1 · 26/11/2008 10:36

too long to go into here. ds2 and dd are their grandchildren; ds1 has different paternal GPs.
