My friend mocks me for not being in a relationship

(28M) working fully remotely, and I've never been in a relationship due to personal circumstances. I'm not particularly bothered about it and don't feel like I'm missing out, but I do plan to get into dating soon.

The problem is that one of my friends keeps mocking me for not having a girlfriend and being a virgin, often in front of our other friends. He also makes put-downs about other things in my life. I only see him about once a year, so it's not like we're even particularly close that much.

Honestly, I find it quite annoying and disrespectful. I sometimes wonder if he's doing it to make himself feel superior or better about himself. I don't understand why someone would feel the need to embarrass a friend over something so personal.

Has anyone else dealt with a friend like this?
Sounds like insecure person?

Are you a virgin? Maybe he's worried about you.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/10/2026 20:51

If you only see him once a year then the answer's very easy: don't see him at all.

Wotsupmog · 13/10/2026 20:52

Stop seeing him.

Usernamesalltakenblues · 13/10/2026 20:52

He isn't a friend OP.
Cut him out of your life.

None of his friend's business.

EmptyCan · 13/10/2026 20:55

What’s odder here is that you take the slightest notice of what someone you see once a year thinks of anything!

Childhood friend but became toxic after he has a girlfriend from aboard. He's married with her. His parents disapproved because she's comes from different religon. But they got over it.

He was sad becuase of his parents and decided to pick on me because I'm an easy target. He moved to different country couple of years ago so I only see him only once a year when he comes back from aboard (friends group together).

He's not a good friend. I hope other people tell him he's being a prick.

ItsPickleRick · 13/10/2026 21:11

Definitely insecure. He’s trying to pull you down, could he be jealous of your lifestyle maybe?

But whatever he once was to you, now he’s just someone you see once annually — why is his opinion of the remotest interest to you? Why see him at all if it’s not enjoyable?

ChaChaChat · 13/10/2026 21:18

He’s insecure so targeting what he perceives as your ‘weakness’. Wave him goodbye..

SandyCastles · 13/10/2026 21:22

He's not a friend, he's a prick.

Why do you still meet up with him at all?

Rabbitinahabit · 13/10/2026 21:26

Ditch him! That is just downright horrible.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 13/10/2026 21:29

There’s an old phrase

“with friends like that who needs enemies”

he’s no friend

MyArtfulGreySloth · 13/10/2026 21:30

Why would a 28 year old man come to mumsnet to ask this? 🥱

TheeNotoriousPIG · 13/10/2026 21:43

I've had this from family, friends and vague acquaintances since I was 16. I may have exploded at a family member for this, because I cannot necessarily avoid them for the rest of my life. I don't socialise with ex-friends who are intolerant of me being cheerfully single. I tolerated their relationships, being dumped in favour of their partners, and being moaned at when things went wrong... so why couldn't they do it for me?

I would dump him, OP. He is rude and disrespectful. Only ever change because you want to. Don't let other people force you into being someone that you're not, because it won't make you happy. If you're happy being single at present, keep it up!

Shinyandnew1 · 13/10/2026 21:49

He’s toxic and he picks on you. None of my friends do this. I think you need better friends

NoisyMonster678 · 13/10/2026 22:08

Tell him to immediatly stop the harassment about your personal life, as it is none of his buisness.

He is a mean and nasty piece of work who just wants to taunt you, he thinks he can get away with it.

You need to stand your ground with this loser, as he is not someone you should trust with any personal informtion because he could use it against you.

He is a shallow and narrow minded fool.

Yes, @rdbballe , he's belittling you in order to feel better about himself.

Nasty comment. Why ?

TheSandgroper · 14/10/2026 02:24

Yes, he does it because it makes him happy. It puts him in his happy place whilst among your group. And he can pull out that line and go to his happy place any time he wants. If the group continues to allow this then they aren’t much of a friendship, either.

Your life is your life. Who cares, if you aren’t hurting anyone?

So, you can suck it up for the sake of the annual occasion, you can avoid the annual occasion or you can set him in his place, once and for all but you will need to be prepared to live with any consequences. So, it probably depends upon how much you value yourself vs how much you value the friendship group.
