My friend mocks me for not being in a relationship

(28M) working fully remotely, and I've never been in a relationship due to personal circumstances. I'm not particularly bothered about it and don't feel like I'm missing out, but I do plan to get into dating soon.

The problem is that one of my friends keeps mocking me for not having a girlfriend and being a virgin, often in front of our other friends. He also makes put-downs about other things in my life. I only see him about once a year, so it's not like we're even particularly close that much.

Honestly, I find it quite annoying and disrespectful. I sometimes wonder if he's doing it to make himself feel superior or better about himself. I don't understand why someone would feel the need to embarrass a friend over something so personal.

Has anyone else dealt with a friend like this?
Sounds like insecure person?

I think it's a kind interpretation to say that's he's insecure. It's more like he gets a kick out of being mean, and thinks that by doing that in front of other people, he can entertain them and elevate his own social status by doing that.

Just stop responding to him, and don't give him 2nd chances. He's showing you his true colours and someone mature that is on your side wouldn't be treating you like this.

Having a woman doesn’t validate you, any more than having a man validates women. We can all be alone.

But, if you want to change things, then do what you want to do. 👍

Have a ‘friend’ similar to this. Lives abroad, see them once a year.

Takes every opportunity to belittle me or pick apart negative things in my life. I’m certain they also do it behind my back on a WhatsApp group I’m not in.

It upset me for a long time as we’ve been friends since we were 7. But, I took the decision to not engage anymore on the WhatsApp group I am in and don’t bother with the meet ups when they’re back in the U.K.

I've reflected a lot and actually feel good about it now. I’ve drawn the conclusion that they are envious of me and their sniping is a defence mechanism and built around petty jealousy.

I feel sorry for them. And cutting them out of my life has been more than liberating. I’d encourage you to do the same.

This isn’t about the friend. You are questioning your life-style. Take ownership of it.

He is not your friend. He’s one of life’s nasty little bullies. My DS had a ‘friend’ like this. Nobody from primary school through to college liked him. He was innately nasty, and enjoyed elevating himself by making others squirm.

IMO you’ve got to face up to bullies, and have some comebacks ready.

Why the obsession with my sex life John? It’s your insecurity about your little chipolata again isn’t it? It’s just got to be.

Make him squirm for a change, remember bullies are the biggest cowards.

That’s not a friend.

Error404FucksNotFound · 15/10/2026 10:28

You need to read a dictionary because you haven't got the definition of friend correct.

Look up Gigantic Twat for this guy.

Marineboy67 · 15/10/2026 11:10

This person is not your friend! A friend wouldn't feel the need to mock you and put you down because of your relationship status. It's just bullying behaviour purely for his entertainment and serves no purpose only to make you feel bad about your situation.
Unfortunately a lot of men do this to make themselves feel better, it's the same old teenage behaviour just taking the piss, the my dicks bigger than yours scenario.
Get him out of your life for good.
You just go at your own pace and when & if you feel ready then go dating.

Magsbd · 15/10/2026 11:20

The way I would deal with this friend would be to stop seeing him/her. That person is vile.

AlwaysExtraHot · 15/10/2026 11:51

He's not a friend, he's a cunt. Just don't see him any more. If he asks why, tell him.

Why would a 28 year old man come to mumsnet to ask this? 🥱

Maybe he’s hoping we will all message him with our numbers and the offer to “de-flower” him 🤣

It certainly seems a little odd though.

Yes, come to a women's site to talk about sex.
