Managing a libido mismatch in an otherwise happy long term relationship

VioletSkins · 04/10/2026 09:24

I’m struggling with a mismatch in sex drive between my partner and me, and I’m unsure what it means for our future. I love him and our relationship and I can’t imagine walking away over this, but I do worry about the long-term impact.

Outside of sex, our relationship is genuinely loving and healthy. We communicate well, are a great team, show each other lots of affection, and he consistently makes time for me, supports me and tries to meet my other needs. He’s a great dad too - they are not our shared children, they are from his previous relationship but I get on with them very well.

When we do have sex, it’s really good, intimate and fun.

The problem is that it’s very sporadic. I’ve noticed he’s much more likely to initiate after we’ve had a disagreement. I think he may use sex as part of repairing the emotional connection. When things are calm and settled (which is most of the time) sex seems much less important to him, whereas that’s exactly when I feel most relaxed and connected and want it. He’s always telling me he’s happy and relaxed around me so I know he’s not stressed. He also knows I like to have sex for emotional connection not just for pleasure reasons.

What makes this more complicated is that he’s told me his last relationship was mostly based on sex, stress and conflict and he wants to create a loving connection with me.

We’ve talked about it a lot, and he’s said he can feel pressure around sex, so I’ve tried hard not to create that. The difficulty is that I find him very attractive and his natural affection often increases my desire. He’ll frequently touch my thigh or bum, kiss me passionately, tell me I look good, or be physically affectionate, which is lovely but can also leave me feeling frustrated when it doesn’t lead anywhere. I like the connection the affection creates, but it can feel like I can’t seem to create the same feeling in him of desire even though I know he finds me attractive.

We’re currently on holiday, which has made the mismatch particularly noticeable. There are plenty of moments where we could potentially have time alone, but they don’t really happen, and by the evening we’ve usually had dinner, had a few drinks, eaten a lot, we’re both tired and the opportunity is gone. The kids also wake early, so mornings aren’t particularly practical either.

He doesn’t have any obvious physical difficulties with sex. I think we approach it very differently. He prefers things to be planned and being sober, not too full up, brushed teeth etc., and seems to prefer mornings/daytime.

I’m much more spontaneous and feel desire throughout the day. He just doesn’t seem to think much about creating opportunities for alone time and when I make suggestions he agrees, but then they don’t happen.

On holiday he does seem to drink a lot more than usual and we had a great fun evening, when we got back I wanted to go to bed, and he wanted to stay up so I went alone.

We have woken up today he’s very hungover as he stayed up drinking without me and I feel myself being irritated with him about it and I’m finding it hard to not show it.

He then also showed me he had text his ex photos of their kids (that I had taken!) while I was asleep, so my brain goes to other places with that, but there was nothing else untoward in the messages.

We can actually get childcare as we are away with other adults, and he’s suggested asking them a few times so we can go do something alone but it’s not actually happened.

He asked me this morning if I wanted to go on date night tonight, I said yes, but I don’t fancy drinking again, so then he said no point in going out and do it another night.

So if I want a date night alone with him, I will be drinking with him and there will be no sex. Then I said we could go out in the day for a few hours so walk about, and he said maybe. He’s hungover so not sure I can see this happening.

Now I’m in a situation where I feel like it’s unfair to be pissed off, no one owes another person sex, and I don’t want him to have sex when he doesn’t want to just for my sake and forcing his hand. I just feel disappointed and he gets really fed up when this happens. The last time we had sex was on Friday but after we had a disagreement the night before. As I’m irritated, I think this will mean he feels pressure to have sex with me to relieve the tension, rather than just a spontaneous opportunity and it’s just a vicious cycle we can’t seem to get out of sometimes.

I’m trying to work out how much this is something we can realistically compromise on, rather than expecting either of us to change who we are. Has anyone else managed a significant libido mismatch in an otherwise very happy relationship? How did you make it work long term?

I am going to take myself off today for a while to relax and get some space and be less available and around him. I’ve also been relieving myself which he doesn’t know about. I’ve brought a load of pretty dresses and underwear on holiday and sometimes feel like all this effort is a waste on him but perhaps I’m trying too hard and I should just be grateful I have a nice man who treats me well otherwise.

Alcohol seems to be an issue if he doesn’t want a date without drinking. I would find that quite insulting if I’m honest like he would find spending time with me boring without booze! Him drinking all night would also piss me off.

You say sex for him needs to be planned and in the daytime so if I was you I would say I would like to arrange for the kids to be with family for a few hours so we can have sex ( or suggest it another day as you sound rejected and fed up). He does seem to want sex on his terms.

VioletSkins · 04/10/2026 12:23

Thanks.

I went out for a couple of hours and came back less irritated.

He has now arranged for us to go out today and he also suggested sex later 3 times now. I didn’t help the situation by laughing and saying sure, I won’t hold my breath and he got defensive. I just said if we go out drinking then it’s off the cards and left it there. He said he was just enjoying himself and we will spend time together today. Then he said maybe it’s too hot to go out at the moment and he looks tired and sleepy so I’m just sitting here waiting.

It does sound more of a booze problem than a sex problem x

AnonAnonmystery · 04/10/2026 12:45

Well this is very telling @VioletSkins . He wants to repair the situation as he knows you are upset. Make up sex is fine, my partner and I will do it but the other times are driven by desire and wanting a connection. He doesn’t seem to be making you feel desired at all. And you have made so much effort it seems and it goes unnoticed. I hope the rest of your day gets better and you manage to have good and meaningful time together.

Laiste · 04/10/2026 12:52

Oooh it's not good.
I know how you feel as i have a slightly higher sex drive than DH. (His lack is down to being v tired out by work, and when he's actually off work for more than a couple of days his starts to match mine. But that's rare as he's a total workaholic!)
Anyway i get it! It's crap when you're mismatched.

Putting myself in your DHs shoes - if i felt my partner was getting stroppy about sex (even slightly) it would really put me off. So firstly you have to try really hard to stop this. Its hard, but if you have something to say make it constructive and deliberate. Maybe take this as an opportunity to see what happens and then if sex doesn't materialise use it as a clear example (n a calm convo) of how you feel things are going wrong and that you don't know how to break the cycle.

How often is he happy with sex? Per week.

dogsaremybusiness · 04/10/2026 13:00

Yeah, this sounds exactly like my relationship. My DH libido has always been much lower than mine. Shift working doesn't help. Last time we dtd was July, and we have only dtd 4 times this year. We are older now though (he's 54 and I'm 57). It used to cause huge arguments when I was in my 40's. Sometimes though he would have a 2-3 month period of being very horny, and then it would just fizzle out. He did try a pill called Tadalafyl which helped immensely, you can get it from NUMAN. My libido is lower now, so the issue isn't that big of a deal now. How old are you both? If you are getting on a bit, I would say ride it out (no pun intended).

CaledoniaScot · 04/10/2026 14:50

Reading this I would have thought I wrote it.....I'm watching for replies 🙄

VioletSkins · 04/10/2026 15:30

To be honest I wasn’t feeling stroppy about the actual sex itself it’s the representation of the laziness attitude. Choosing alcohol instead, and also doing things which will be arousing, so caressing my bum on a sun lounger or snogging me just as we leave the house. These are all such low effort activities which build up.

If he just said I’m tired etc I would be fine I would know where I stand, it’s the anticipation of waiting around that gets me irritable. I was irritable as being hungover just puts a bit of a cloud over the whole day of tiredness and I just want to see him make some effort for me.

I tried not to be irritable or bring it up - I hadn’t brought sex up at all since we got on holiday, he actually brings it up and since he said he felt under pressure a few months ago, I don’t ask him to have sex anymore. I hadn’t been very affectionate today and I assume he noticed, plus I went out leaving him hungover with the kids and he text me after an hour to ‘check I was ok’ and I didn’t reply.

He followed me back to our room an hour ago when I got too hot in the sun and initiated sex with me, he really didn’t seem that into it from an effort perspective, so I stopped him and asked him to be honest if he was just doing it for my sake, and that I didn’t want it if he didn’t want to, he promised he wanted to do it. So we did. It did feel a bit like a tick box exercise to start with but I gave him plenty of opportunities to opt out. I wasn’t really in an aroused mood at that time but I didn’t turn him down.

After sex he said ‘do you feel better now?’ Clearly insinuating I was moody about it, which didn’t help, but I responded that I was fine and didn’t need sex to feel better about anything thanks very much, but it was a shame he was tired with a hangover as I would have liked to go out today like he suggested.

He’s pulled his socks up a bit since then and we are going out in an hour apparently but he’s asleep on a lounger and will be interesting to see if he remembers to come and get ready at the time he agreed or leave me here waiting ages

Sometimes we will have sex 4 times in a week out of the blue, and sometimes nothing for over a week. When he clocks it’s been a while he will appear to begrudgingly put some effort in but usually a quick morning one, then other times he’s initiating it properly because he wants to or he’s trying to make up with me

How did this afternoon go?
Yours is a bit of an unusual problem as you do have sex but it seems to be if and when he wants it. Have you thought it might be useful to see a sex therapist together and maybe seperately?

enoughisfuckingenough · 04/10/2026 22:37

My hunch is that he’s not entirely straight

I’d find this so unattractive @VioletSkins
but it’s up to you if you want to be in a relationship where he controls the sex

I would never allow this to happen it’s not nice or respectful

VioletSkins · 05/10/2026 10:53

We went out for dinner last night, he treated me to a lovely meal at sunset overlooking the sea, and he voluntarily opened up quite a lot about what goes on in his head around sex.

We’d both been drinking, but I’ve told him I’m not drinking for the rest of the trip, and he’s said he’s taking time off alcohol too, which I think will be good for us.

I already knew that he has always had quite a strong need to control sex. But it’s not actually about power or control for gratification it’s self protection.

This is connected to his previous relationship, where he and his ex became involved in a fairly intense kinky dynamic that gradually became darker and pushed boundaries he wasn’t comfortable with. He wasn’t hurting her, not that kind of kink but he ended up hating himself because he was going along with things he didn’t want to do or felt horrible afterwards and he’s had therapy for this before we met.

Since that relationship, I’m the only person he has slept with out of choice. He says he wants his relationship with sex to be different with me, connected, loving, trusting and respectful rather than something he uses to connect with someone without genuine emotional intimacy. I think that’s why he uses it to repair things.

That actually helps me understand some of his behaviour. At the same time, I have my own feelings around it. Sometimes when he holds back sexually or affection, I interpret it as meaning that I’m not enough for him or that he doesn’t desire me as much as I desire him. He finds that upsetting because he absolutely doesn’t want me to see myself that way.

I’m also sexually adventurous myself and we had gently started exploring a mild kink/power dynamic at home in the bedroom only however this does spill over into real life and we are both ok with this too. We talked about that too, and he was very clear that if we explore that side of our relationship, he wants it to be based on trust, respect and clear boundaries rather than allowing it to become something unhealthy because he’s experienced it going wrong. I agree, particularly because a dynamic involving one person giving the other some control requires a huge amount of trust.

Sex has probably carried a lot more emotional weight for him than I had considered. Men can also have sexual trauma and lose their own self respect it’s just I don’t think men always talk about it. He is conventionally very sexually attractive and has spent years of his life using sex to connect with women but often realising it often doesn’t fulfilling him emotionally.

He’s older now and wants stability and peace. He’s got quite a tough guy image, so I can’t imagine that he would be lying about any of this and make himself this look this vulnerable for no reason.

The mismatch isn’t about how much sex each of us wants. For me, sex is very strongly connected to feeling wanted, desired and close to him. For him, it seems to be tied up with wanting intimacy while also being afraid of falling back into old patterns.

I do feel like I understand him better after this conversation but it doesn’t really solve all of the issues.

The link to sex with arguing would concern me. That sounds like a kink more than anything to do with repairing intimacy - arguing turns him on

Sometimes we will have sex 4 times in a week out of the blue, and sometimes nothing for over a week

That seems like quite a lot to me, but I know every relationship is different.
Replace the word week with month and that's closer to my marriage, though 4 times a month would be very rare.

Yes but it would be less I think left to him, he often will do it weekly because he is doing it to keep me happy.

This is the kind of thing he does though which causes an issue for me and it’s because it’s a ‘safe’ time for him where he doesn’t have to follow through

I went out this morning without saying anything, and when I came back the kids were still asleep. He was lying on the bed in shorts and I went into the room and he reached out for me, so I laid down next to him and he gave me a really big hug wrapped his arms round me, gave me a kiss on the top of my head and wrapped his fingers in mine and then took my hand and placed it on his lap, where he had a semi hard on and said something along the lines of ‘shame the kids will wake up soon’. I responded by saying we could save this until tonight? He didn’t really respond with a yes or a no.

So another day of ‘waiting’ ahead of me and then potential disappointment later on. But if I say something about this, I come across as pestering him. I understand what he feels in the morning might not be relevant tonight.

I’ve come for a lie down as I’m tired and he’s gone back to the pool with the kids, even though the other adults could watch them but in all honesty it’s nice to have a bit of time to myself so I am not going to hold onto this as yet another missed opportunity

It’s always after we have already made up and sorted things out, our arguments are not horrible ones, no one says mean things, they are just disagreements about different perspectives. So they aren’t big blazing rows they are usually misunderstandings and some hurt feelings

Oh and last night when we got home I fell asleep on the sofa and he picked me up, carried me into the bedroom and took off my dress. I laid down and said ‘can I have a hug?’ and he said ‘I’m not having sex with you tonight’ to which I replied ‘I asked for a hug and it bothers me when you make out like I am trying to sexually harass you please don’t twist my words’ and he said sorry and hugged me

Im not a sex therapist so it all seems quite complicated to me.

However my gut reaction is that less than weekly is quite low for a bloke. I'm guessing he's sorting himself out inbetween having sex with you.

Maybe you should pull back completely and see what his pattern is when left entirely up to him? A long term sort of experiment. If he notices and asks you can calmly explain you're leaving the ball in his court for a bit. To take pressure off and step back. See what he says/does. If he doesn't notice or ask then give it a few months (of you not initiating anything) and keep a diary of what happens. It might reveal something or trigger a change in habits.

AnonAnonmystery · 05/10/2026 14:32

I really feel why you are frustrated. What he did this morning would leave anyone sexually frustrated. When I’ve been away with my partner, we’ve had sex before the kids have woken up as they are in a seperate room as we always get a hotel room that’s like an appartment. It’s like he “finds” lots of excuses and pretends he genuinely wants sex. I don’t know op, part of me feels he is playing either you.

AnonAnonmystery · 05/10/2026 14:37

Also you having to ask for a hug :( and him saying he’s not having sex. My partner and I always hug, we don’t ask each other for that basic kind of affection. I really still think you need to both see a sex therapist. He’s so hot and cold with you, I would myself withdraw abs make myself less available to protect myself from being hurt.

VioletSkins · 05/10/2026 15:12

He is hot and cold and he doesn’t seem to see why this is the issue but I honestly don’t think he’s doing it on purpose to test me or get a kick out of it, I haven’t seen any evidence of this and trust me, I’ve looked. He comes across as oblivious and his sexual mood changes on a whim, but he is constantly going out of his way to tell me he’s happy, I make him happy, he loves me and he’s never ever hot and cold with his emotions so I do give him credit for that.

I kind of get the impression if he had to chase me to get sex this might be more exciting, but it’s categorically what he says he doesn’t want me to do, he said he cannot deal with playing games because that’s what his ex used to do.

We have been all round the houses with this for some time now and I did pull back and stop doing or saying anything at all, which led to one crazy intense weekend where we had loads of sex and tried new things which we both really enjoyed and he still goes on about them.

Right now he’s actually in soppy, loving mode on holiday, holding my hand in public, always sitting next to me but in private at night he just kind of goes into his own little world, shuts down and seems to forget I’m there. I think he got used to his own company during his single days so this could be a throwback, I don’t know. But I’m pretty sure during our discussion last night I recall him talking a lot about trust so I do think he is still not 100% ready to relinquish this control over his libido

He made a comment recently out of the blue that he hasn’t really been doing this, but I don’t ask. I do it so he can do what he wants. I know why he would do it - it’s less effort than having sex, which takes energy and time

What is the rest of the relationship like? You say it’s otherwise happy but from what you’ve said, there are a lot of push and pull dynamics and tensions around sex as this will spill in and affect domestic life. Is he a bit older that you as you reference his ex and their children? I think he knows sex can be an issue so not sure why he offers it when it’s not available. It sounds like he’s ott with your in public with lots of pdas and declarations of how much he fancies you. It doesn’t all balance though and I’m not sure why.

VioletSkins · 05/10/2026 15:38

I can elaborate on what he’s told me, that she would apparently degrade him. I don’t know if this was in or out of the bedroom or both, but she would make mean comments on his looks, age, parenting etc and put him down constantly and he said he had never been so low in self esteem. She would also ask him constantly if she looked good, sending photos of herself and telling him his friends fancied her. He struggles to accept compliments from me

He came back to the room to use the toilet while I was there but instead of waiting for him to come out (he was ages) I just left and went back to the pool. I think I need to work on detaching and stop creating opportunities myself
