Am I expecting too much from my husband, or is our marriage becoming one-sided?

Hi there ! i really need your advice! My husband and I are going through a difficult period and I would really appreciate an outside perspective.
He works a lot, earns significantly more than I do and spends much of his time away for work. My job is more flexible, so I handle most of the day-to-day life with our 10-year-old: school, activities, appointments, holidays, pick-ups, as well as much of the cooking, cleaning, groceries, household organisation and our dog. Sometimes I stop working to deal with family responsibilities and then work late at night to make up the hours.
I recognise that my husband works extremely hard and contributes much more financially. What hurts is that despite everything I do, he criticises how I manage things and has called me a bad mother, a bad wife and a “selfish bitch.” Money is also sometimes brought up during arguments.
I also feel increasingly emotionally neglected. He seems to have time and energy for work, our child and friends, but very little for me. When I try to explain how I feel, I often feel like he wants a quick, precise answer rather than actually having a conversation with his wife.
Our child has even started noticing the tension and trying to comfort me, which worries me a lot.
I know I am far from perfect and I am absolutely willing to recognise my own mistakes. But lately I have started wondering whether my husband still genuinely wants this marriage, or whether we are simply keeping the family functioning.
Am I expecting too much? How would you see this situation from the outside?

The minute my husband called me a bitch my marriage would be over

Myfridgeiscool · 29/09/2026 09:22

He sounds horrible OP. I’d be concerned more now that it’s affecting your DC.
Time to separate, men don’t change.

I have started wondering whether my husband still genuinely wants this marriage

Do you? It sounds like a very unhappy home and he sounds horrible. Are you considering what you want the rest of your life to look like and if you’d be far happier divorced?

floofydoofy · 29/09/2026 09:23

Calling you a fucking bitch, a bad mother and a bad wife is enough for me to immediately say.... No, he is not wanting a marriage anymore, and from what you are saying about him... you shouldn't either. I'm not usually a LTB type of person, but what is he adding to your life except money? Could you survive on your own wage? If so, you're already doing everything else so it won't be too difficult of a transition for you.

I'm really sorry you've ended up in this situation OP. It is absolutely crushing for your self worth when someone gives absolutely nothing back emotionally when you're pouring everything into your family. hugs

backformoreofthesame · 29/09/2026 09:24

The impact on your child is worrying and says it’s time to leave

loveiswhatwedeserve · 29/09/2026 09:35

thank you all for your comments and advices. Honestly i am a scientist and have my own income. I guess i am just terrify of the consequences of a divorce, for many reasons. i have also to admit that i hate the idea that other woman will replace me and have kids with him and so on....ough i am sorry about this stupid thoughts but they come. Another thing that really hurt me was when we talked about possibly having another baby. Instead of telling me that he had concerns or simply that he didn’t want another child, he told me, “You’re too old to have a baby.” ( i am 38 yo). After that, I decided I don’t want to bring the subject up again. I understood his position, but the way he said it made me feel deeply hurt and rejected. we just moved to a new house that i honestly couldn't affort alone, but anyhow maybe its time for me to rethink my kid´s future and mine.

Get away from him asap OP. He’s abusive.

Seaoftroubles · 29/09/2026 09:45

OP, it's definitely time to rethink your future. He sounds horrible and and is demonstrating his extreme contempt towards you, probably in front of your child. He is certainly no role model. Please look into leaving him and start to quietly get prepared. Consult a solicitor and see where you stand financially. No one should have to be called such vile names or be treated like this.

Ocean67 · 29/09/2026 09:47

I had my last three children in my late thirties/early forties and I conceived quickly! Lots of women have babies at an older age.
my main thought is .. do you really want to have another baby with a man that no longer sees ‘you’?
he doesn’t respect you or care, no loving respectful partner would call you a bad mother or a bitch!
I understand the fear of change and perhaps of him turning into a complete arsehole during a divorce but staying with him will bring many more years of misery.
Don’t worry about women after you ( feel pity for them) and maybe you’ll meet someone worthy of you

DaisyChain505 · 29/09/2026 09:51

You shouldn’t be terrified of the consequences of divorce. You should be terrified of the consequence of staying and letting your child think this is what a normal relationship looks like.

Children become what they see and the longer you stay, the more damage is done.

hby9628 · 29/09/2026 09:57

He’s awful and you should not have to put up with his behaviour. The impact this is having on your child would be enough for me to walk away without a second thought. You deserve better.

Whoops75 · 29/09/2026 10:01

He doesn’t love you OP let someone else have him. You will have a lovely peaceful life without him and your daughter will be happier.

Talk to a solicitor

Forthetrees · 29/09/2026 10:01

You will be far happier without him. Read It's not you, by Dr Ramani and see if any of it resonates. She also has YouTube videos.

You know what to do.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 29/09/2026 10:30

I'd be out of the relationship the moment he called me a "bitch" (or equivalent). That's a hard limit for me, why would I want to be with someone who insults me.

BCBird · 29/09/2026 10:30

Why does he think it is acceptable to call u a bitch?

BCBird · 29/09/2026 10:43

Do yourself and your child a favour by seriously considering a life without you two living together. He can still be a parent. As for not liking the idea of someone else having children with him, is he the man you fell for? U r probably in love with the man he used to be. Peace and well-being are underrated. Put you and ur child first. Even if u wanted more, surely it is better to stick at 1? U and ur daughter could have a peaceful life.

Bringemout · 29/09/2026 10:45

He’s abusive, Dh and I have had some stand up rows he’s never once called me a bitch or said I was a bad mother. He treats you like shit, no he doesn’t want to be married to you and frankly he’s not the type of person who should be married to anyone, no woman deserves this treatment.

Just leave, get yourself organised and leave.

whippersnapper55 · 29/09/2026 11:08

He sounds horrible 😢 any man who speaks to his life partner and mother of his child like that is an arsehole. Do you want to be married to an arsehole?

Honestly, there's no way that you should be putting up with this. It's already affecting your child - isn't that enough reason to put an end to it?

Divorce really isn't the end of the world. You and your child can be happier and live a life free from criticism and cruelty. You can find a partner who is kind and caring and treats you well. Please don't stay and let the arsehole grind you down.

HatAndScarf33 · 29/09/2026 11:44

He sounds horrible - I mean your set up isn't uncommon with him being the higher earner, with a high pressure job, yet plenty of men manage to treat their wives decently and respect and appreciate their contribution.

Calling you names and dismissing huge life decisions like having another baby is terrible behaviour on his part. I'd be looking to leave or giving an ultimatum for therapy being a last attempt to save things. Whatever you do, don't just put up with it. You deserve better and so does your child.

poppymango · 29/09/2026 11:50

I need to make it clear that just because he earns more than you do, he is not more important than you are. He is not working harder than you simply because he earns more, although I'm certain that's how he sees it. His time is not more valuable, and you are not obliged to sacrifice yourself in perpetuity, just because his job pays better. His salary does not give him the right to behave the way he is behaving.

When you say "Money is also sometimes brought up during arguments", is this him criticising your money management? Or throwing his weight around because he contributes more financially than you do? Would he be able to do the job he does, earn the salary he does, go away for work as much as he does, if you weren't responsible for literally every other aspect of life? You say your job is more flexible, but do you work roughly the same (full time) hours every week? Because if so, you are working MUCH harder than him. How dare he call you a bad mother when he does basically no parenting himself? On balance, you contribute far more to your household than he does.

And, to echo others: regardless of anything else, the way he speaks to you is absolutely unacceptable and would be enough for me to end it. It's already clearly upsetting your child. You deserve more than this scumbag who thinks his bank balance makes him God's gift. You will be SO much happier without him.

You don't need a fancy house! You could be so happy in a little 2 bedroom flat. Decorate it how you want. Make it a gorgeous, happy little sanctuary for you, your son, and your dog.

Genuinely, and I know this will sound silly, but start looking at interior design inspiration for small flats on Pinterest. Make a mood board of the kind of places you could afford, and get excited about the possibility of what could come next. Try and imagine yourself living in a cute little flat, decorated just how you love it, with nobody there to make you feel small.

38 is still so young ❤

MeridaBrave · 29/09/2026 12:06

Totally not ok to call you a bad mother a bad wife or selfish bitch. Or to bring up money if you are both earning and managing childcare and home stuff. I wouldn’t tolerate being called any of those things. I’d be clear that I’d start divorce proceedings if I was called any of those things.

loveiswhatwedeserve · 29/09/2026 12:38

to answer those:
"Money is also sometimes brought up during arguments", is this him criticising your money management? Or throwing his weight around because he contributes more financially than you do? --->>>> well yes i he is doing both.
Would he be able to do the job he does, earn the salary he does, go away for work as much as he does, if you weren't responsible for literally every other aspect of life? You say your job is more flexible, but do you work roughly the same (full time) hours every week?--->>>> probably he would need a babysitter and yes i do have a 100% job as well, i work very late hours in the evening to advance my research otherwise ...

and another thing is that he is blaming me for buying the dog which limit us to travel since we need a sitter that he doesnt want to pay, but anyhow yes bought the dog, is a chihuahua, my son really wanted a chihuahua and i wasnt against it, i told him i was going to buy it and he even gave me the card, and since i bought the dog he is only complaining and blaming me ... we passed over that conversation and instead of being a team he is just remembering me how stupid i was to do this. ough if i would tell u the many things he had called me, i mean he already called bitch in front of our child.
He says alsways he feels bad for the insults, other times he said he really means them and then other time he just ignore the fact the insulted me. he many times said that i am not intelligent enough and that he doesnt understand how do i have a phd and how did i made it until where i am now. Many other things..... the screaming, the blaming, the telling me i have to check my reality because i dont see whats real ...
