Am I overreacting, or is my partner being controlling about my phone use?

Sunshineandrainbows99 · 21/09/2026 17:25

I really need some perspective here..

been with partner 2.5 years. I’ve always had issues with some behaviour that I feel is “controlling”

so the weekend we went away abroad for my birthday. We sat down for a meal and I put my phone on the table and messaged my friend a few times.. 3x to be precise. She had some really good baby news so I was thrilled for her.

he said to me “it seems to me that you’ve been on your phone a lot today”. I look at him and I’m like what? And he’s like yeah.. I don’t know what you’re doing on it but it’s been a few times. And at this point I say no I havnt? I’ve been on a few times to message 2 of my friends.

he then said “ it would be nice to feel like your prioritising your relationship rather than prioritising your friends”.

at this point I lose it… I said I’ve barely messaged them and went onto my activity log and said look I’ve been on what’s app for 6 mins in 8hours. I sent 2 messages at 1pm and 4 messages at 2pm.

I said both my friend today are struggling with baby loss news and they have no one to talk to? i said I am not the type of friend to ignore them just because I’m away and on holiday. I said I could understand if I’ve spent the whole meal on my phone but we’ve just sat down..

we’ve not even ordered… I’ve spent all day with you. He then said well you might have only been on it 6 mins but it’s the constant checking to see if someone’s messaged you, you going onto social media and looking.. doing your usual check of the 3 social media accounts, checking in with your son, checking in with your friends. He said you’ve messaged 7 people today.. I said no I’ve messaged 2 friend and my son because my bank card has been hacked.

I said had my bank card not been hacked I wouldn’t even of been on my phone in that time period?

I said he’s being unreasonable and out of order. He said that he had spent a great deal of money and time to take me here and all he’s asking is a reasonable request. I said it would be reasonable if I spent the whole day on my ohone but the evidence and facts are there in black and white.

I went mad and said if you think that I’m a type of girl to be told when I can and can’t go on my phone and not message my friends and be self centered then your with the wrong girl.

he said “evidently I’m with the wrong girl” I’m with someone who’s ungrateful and hasn’t even shown appreciation for being here.

i went to the toilet and I came back still fuming. And then it was “ your over reacting, this reaction is not normal, why are you being this way” which infuriated me even more.

there is numerous times where he accuses me of being on my phone too much, saying he doesn’t know what I’m doing on there, telling me that it’s shady.

the day before he told me in the car that the 2 weeks In a row I’ve got my hair and nails done and not come over to have dinner with him and his kids and basically he’s a bit miffed over it because I’m prioritising that over spending time with his kids. I said I could understand if it’s a pattern but it’s twice and I get them done so infrequently anyways.. and self care is important to me.. I have a stressful job, I share custody so can only do things like that when I don’t have my kids so i just book it in on a day my kids are with their dad.

i said this is the straw that broke the camels back and I’m sick of the constant finger pointing, blaming me for everything, telling me it’s my tone, how I speak, if I didn’t attack him he wouldn’t have to be so defensive.

i posted on here before about his over reaction to me going on an abroad day trip with my friends and I got the cold shoulder and guilt trip.

he’s now messaging me saying I’ve over reacted and my reaction didn’t warrant this. I’ve said he’s controlling..

I said I can understand to a point about having quality time and I’d be more open to it if he was like can we have some quality time babe do you mind putting your phone away.. but to say “it seems to me you’ve been on your phone a lot” .. and then when I got his phone usage up.. he had been on his phone more times than I had and spent more
time in general on it.. and had been speaking to his daughter for 15 mins consistently over messages!! I mean it doesn’t bother me but it’s pot kettle black here.

on the evening we got home and I said I’m done with this I’ve had enough he said I was acting mental and behaving mental… he said he didn’t say I was mental but acting it? Same
thing to me..

I just feel like it’s really unfair and to me controlling? I’ve told him he’s controlling and actually showing signs of narcissistic traits.

So your friend had good baby news but then you said it was about a baby loss? I'm confused.

Either way, i think he has the right to feel you aren't present enough for him and you can decide that what you give is the best you can do.

You then part ways.

Lexibletheflexible · 21/09/2026 17:31

"She had some really good baby news so I was thrilled for her."

"said both my friend today are struggling with baby loss news"

Pearlstillsinging · 21/09/2026 17:32

I would be annoyed with someone checking their phone/messaging at a restaurant table tbh.
However I wouldn't put up with someone telling me when I can gave my hair/nails done. It sounds as if you have had enough of his controlling behaviour, so it's time to end this relationship.

Why did you need to message when you were out for a meal? Phones are off and away during meals.

NotMajorTom · 21/09/2026 17:36

I think I’m with him tbh
are you on your phone too much? Honestly?

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 21/09/2026 17:39

Well I agree to an extent. There is nothing more annoying than the person you are with being distracted by their phone. Constantly checking it and checking social media is bad enough but messaging when sat down to have a meal is just rude. So I get that.

The hair and nails though? That is weird and sounds a little controlling. I think its a bit shit to tell someone when they can, or can't have their nails done, unless the time arranged for you to go and have dinner with him and his kids is the same time every week and you are constantly prioritising that over seeing them. I see his point of view of why can't you do that another time? Why when its supposed to be when you are spending time with them? It would sound a bit like you value having your hair done over being with them if that is the only time you see them.

As we’ve been walking around all day and hadn’t had any time to check in.

and for clarity my one friend had good baby news following a loss and my other friend is struggling with baby loss. They’ve messaged me as I have recently lost a baby so we have shared understanding.

I agree if we usually go out for a meal the phones are away but this was before we even ordered or was eating.

If you’re at a table with someone whether you’ve ordered yet or not, it’s still rude to be on your phone

Gazelda · 21/09/2026 17:42

You were out for dinner during a weekend break.

i think you were incredibly rude to use your phone.

however, I suspect this is the culmination of many examples of you feeling controlled. It’s just a shame you chose this one to use as a deal breaker.

don’t try to point score or justify. Agree that the relationship isn’t working and part ways.

I hope you find someone who you enjoy spending time with

Catza · 21/09/2026 17:42

It's not controlling for someone to comment that they feel you are not being present in a relationship by staring at your phone. Controlling would be restricting phone use, asking to check your message history, installing spy software on your phone or even acting angry/sulking at your phone use in order for you to change your behaviour. Commenting on the fact that you are somewhere to have a nice time and, instead, you are prioritising your phone which makes him feel disconnected is categorically NOT controlling.
Your reaction is completely OTT unless there is a massive back story to all of this.
He stated the boundary, you are not willing to accept this boundary. The only solution here is to break up.

To a degree… so I go round for tea every Fortnite on a Thursday.

my hair and nails have fell inbetween those 2 weeks. I said there is nothing I can do as I can’t take my toddler with me to the salon as children are banned, I don’t have anyone else to watch him so I have to go when I’m free. He has other times where I could see them but he says no, it has to be that Thursday as Sundays he doesn’t like to distracting his time with them with me coming over. I did say could I make it up on a Sunday and was told no.

so it’s only happened in these 2 weeks. I’ve been seeing them for 6 months on a Thursday so never been something I’ve done before.

I think you're both in the wrong.

You should not be messaging other people at a restaurant table. He should not be interfering with your hair appointments etc.

Jellybunny98 · 21/09/2026 17:43

I agree with him to be fair, if you’re sat at a table with someone it’s rude to be sat on your phone, neither my husband nor I would like this. You’re with that person, everyone else on your phone can wait- it’s not life or death.

Your reaction would be the red flag for me though and I’d be done with you for that alone

Blessedbethefruitloopss · 21/09/2026 17:46

Let him say you’re mental, you’re out. Take the win!

mtobrokeme · 21/09/2026 17:47

I mean it is rude to be on your phone during a meal but other than that he sounds like a proper boring fucker, hen pecking and annoying.

Exactly this. I become irate if I have spent time or effort preparing dinner or going out for dinner only to be ignored for a phone. That would not be acceptable for me.

But I wouldn’t tolerate someone telling me when/if I can have my hair or nails done, so unless there is more to it and you have dithered over whether you will or will not attend dinner, or you spend every night together and you haven’t communicated that you’re not around then that’s not okay.

redjaffacake · 21/09/2026 17:49

he’s not wrong, you are not wrong. Both valid views but ultimately it depends on how you communicate and tolerate each other and honestly you both sound very intolerant of each other.

id struggle to understand getting hair and nails done every week. I’d not tell someone to come and see my kids on their child free day. I’d message my friend if they needed it at the dinner table, and also be present if someone had taken me out on a date.

ItsAlwaysTwins · 21/09/2026 17:51

TL:DR but it’s rude to be on your phone when you’re out for a meal.

SpottyPyjama · 21/09/2026 17:53

Your behaviour is rude and it seems he just has better table manners than you. It is understandable for someone to be annoyed when they have made an effort but their companion is to engrossed in their phone to be present and engaged.

If you're sitting at the table I agree its rude to check your phone but from everything else you've posted it doesn't sound like a healthy relationship and if you've posted about him before imo thats your sign to move on

Oh no.. I don’t get my hair and nails done every week.. I wish.

my hair is every 7 weeks and nails every 3. They’ve unfortunately fell on the 2 alternate Thursdays I was due to go around.

it’s never happened before it’s just the way it falls. And because I booked it so far in advance I just do it Thursday as I know I’m free.

and yes to everyone saying it’s rude at the table. I agree and it’s not something we routinely do.. however, he was looking at the menu… I alresdy knew what I was ordering and was waiting for him and in that time I responded to a friend.

but yes it can look rude absolutely however, there is a bigger story that runs behind like this someone said and tbh I may of overreacted because I am literally exhausted by it all.

That was very long but from the off yabu putting your phone on table and messaging when out for a meal. So that doesn’t help your case. You can excuse it all you like, but there will have been opportunities to message that weren’t at the table, so then you’re into an argument where you’ve already lost, which is unfortunate if he’s genuinely controlling.
