Going off him

I'm starting to notice cracks appearing in what I thought might turn out to become something special.

We are both mid forties and have both been single for ages before meeting each other. It's now just over a year in. He makes me laugh, is helpful, kind, caring. So it seemed.... people are on their best behavior of course.

I've noticed I'll go round to his house sometimes and the toilet is filthy. He lives alone so nobody else's fault. I hadn't been for a week and my stay wasn't planned but I wouldn't expect poo stains to be left and ignored and both upstairs and downstairs toilet seats covered in urine stains and some urine and paper on the floor.

I'm no germaphobe but this was horrendous. He didn't make any effort to clean before I used the loo either.

Quite a few times recently I've noticed his underwear and even his trousers stink of old urine. Well any intimacy is off the table then. To have to tell an adult male to wash is pretty grim.

Now I'm also noticing him ogling other women. Last night we went out with two new friends I've made from a new hobby. They are married and late forties. We were in a busy pub and my boyfriend could not take his eyes off a group of very young women. One was about 19, very long blonde hair, very pretty face. She walked past our table and he undressed her with his eyes and watched her go back to her seat. I noticed my friend's husband did not ogle. He was very involved in the conversation.

He has done this a few times when out. I've pointed it out to him but he excuses it, says oh teenagers are so funny. Or saying they look too young to be in the pub. They didn't and he was practically drooling.

This behaviour plus his lack of personal hygiene has put me right off him. Am I wrong to feel so turned off? Should I be more tolerant?

He sounds repulsive. Just take your leave.

moderate · 11/09/2026 12:08

You already know the answer. It only gets worse from here on in.

ForTipsyFinch · 11/09/2026 12:14

Surely you don’t really think you’re wrong for this? This is disgraceful, he sounds VILE.

Cotopaxi · 11/09/2026 12:27

Lack of personal hygiene is a big no-no. Time to put this one back.

Poodleville · 11/09/2026 12:28

Really gross. You'd be more than justified to end things.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/09/2026 12:36

Dump him. Do not be dragged down with him into ha his pit.

PetulaGordeno · 11/09/2026 12:38

Why on earth would you want to stay with this filthy and disgusting man?

pikkumyy77 · 11/09/2026 12:38

Oh come on! These are all deal breakers. Show some self protection and dump him.

HappyEnglishTeacher · 11/09/2026 12:45

I thought you were going to say he sniffs a lot or tells cheesy jokes! What you've described is truly awful. You deserve so much better than this. 💓

Cuppachuchu · 11/09/2026 12:46

You've arrived at Icksville. This love train terminates here. 🚂 🔚

PrincessofWills · 11/09/2026 12:48

I'm really sorry, but I don't believe you.

I cannot believe you could ever consider intimacy of any type with this person.

Lovelynames123 · 11/09/2026 12:49

I didn't persue something that showed potential because of poor housekeeping very early on, were there no signs before you got a year in?! Definitely dump, sounds terrible!

AbsintheMakesTheHeartGrowFonder · 11/09/2026 12:51

Jesus. Who the hell wants to carry on dating a man who smells like an elderly tramp?

I'm going to say this loudly because so many Mumsnet threads seem to be from people asking for permission to leave their partner...

Even if you were being picky (which you're not), you are allowed to end a relationship for any reason that matters to you.

Clearly, you're not being picky to be put off by a man who stinks of piss and leaves toilet paper on the floor. But even if your issue was something that most people would find trivial, if it mattered to you, you would still be fully entitled to leave him. You don't have to justify this.

As an aside - have you told him his toilet is repulsive and that his trousers smell like a litter-tray? Not that you should need to. I just wondered what his response was.

whippersnapper55 · 11/09/2026 12:51

Yuk 🤮

You would be wrong to stay with him.

It is not your job to educate him on basic hygiene or manners xxx

MagpiePi · 11/09/2026 16:13

Do you really need to ask for opinions on this?

Just leave him.

FannybygaslightinGovan · 11/09/2026 16:17

He's a pishy, manky, smelly, creepy bastard 🤮

Get rid.

bigboykitty · 11/09/2026 16:19

You don't need to say anything else to him. Just dump the pissy pants pervert. He sounds revolting.

OriginalSkang · 11/09/2026 16:20

Clothes smelling of urine is absolutely wild. That with urine on the seat... at least you won't touch the skid marks in the toilet bowl, but to make you sit on his piss...! I couldn't handle this

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 11/09/2026 16:21

God he's vile @BleuestBelle get rid of him he's a stinker .

mtobrokeme · 11/09/2026 16:22

Often on Mumsnet I see similar posts like yours. One thing or another that has other posters claiming to be ‘gross’ or worthy of calling off a relationship over and I usually think they’re being OTT.

This man of yours sounds utterly grim. I mean he stinks of piss. That’s the only thing you needed to say, all the rest matters not to me. He stinks of piss. Get rid.

Nothing says the scent of man more
Than stale pish

Additup · 11/09/2026 16:56

I generally like to give people the benefit of the doubt and I've been criticised on MN many times for trying to see both sides, but smelling if wee and eyeing up any women but especially those young enough to be his daughter is really, really grim.

deveronvalley · 11/09/2026 16:58

Yeah, a grotty, smelly perv isn’t ideal
