Why am I still analysing a six week relationship full of red flags?

Rrtoca · 07/09/2026 19:36

I'm 31 and was blindsided after 6 weeks with a consistent and seemingly secure man (38!).
Hes a dentist, fairly attractive, smart, and came across secure, very consistent and calm, until I felt little moments where I had to stop and take note.
He didnt really have any friends either which says a lot.

Looking back, he is a walking red flag - he began negging me, triangulating by mentioning other women who apparantly fancied him, asking me to rate him out of 10, asking if I had ever cheated, referring to himself as 'single as fuck' after being intimate, saying how younger women in their 20s are scientifically more desirable than women in their 30s and how a man of his age, status (dentist opening his own clinic) is the most desirable.

So many more very subtle minor things yet he also treated me very well. He spoke poorly of his exes, and got very defensive when a woman was talking about how men are trash, I began thinking, is this guy a misogynist??

He wanted to stay friends but I held him accountable and wished him well with a huge amount of grace and proceeded to remove him everywhere.

This was 4 weeks ago and it looks like hes moved on to a younger woman who happens to be a PT - shes 21, hes 38.

PLEASE HELP ME REFRAME THIS AS HE FUMBLED ME, I DID NOT LOSE HIM.

I KNOW I lost NOTHING. I KNOW I deserve better and he is totally useless to me. But why do I still care??

I logically know I dodged a bullet but WHY AM I STILL ANALYSING THIS?! Its been 4 weeks.

So one of the most emotionally traumatic I’ve ever been through was not getting closure after my last relationship. It was truly awful. So I’m going to share as much as I can to try and help give you that - feel free to ask as many questions as you need to.
I think the feeling of uncertainty and worry mainly comes from wanting -what I think is- an unfair amount of attention and focus, which I think you have to give to [name redacted, by MNHQ] so I feel it would be unfair to ask. I appreciate you don’t agree and would make space, but I’ve seen how much of a focus he is for you, and I feel bad for even thinking the way I do - it’s not fair on you. I don’t even think it’s something you’d be aware of day to day or moment to moment, it would just be the fact there’s someone more important than me at all times, which sounds like such a weak and petty thing, but I think it’s how I’d feel going forwards, wanting to be your number one but knowing I couldn’t be. Perhaps I’m not mature enough to deal with it, or maybe it’s from childhood traumas and not feeling it as a kid - I did touch on this in therapy, like I reach a lot, like I’m searching/yearning for connection, perhaps why I’m so affectionate. And I’m so needy that I foresee issues - I sound like a child, but I think it’s true.
I do also feel a strong sense of responsibility, and I think the whole 6 months down the line in ,and it potentially not working, as that’s a whole new variable to have to figure out, and the fact that I obviously don’t have a kid, so have no idea what that looks or feels like or what might or might not be expected of me, feels like a lot of risk, and I don’t like the idea of then being like ‘cool yeah not working for me bye’, that would be awful, and it leaves me feeling like it’s just so risky. This is less of an issue than the first thing, but certainly weighs on me as I’m not sure if I’m acting responsibly here. Which is why I came to you as soon as I could grasp that I had doubt, as I don’t want to be irresponsible with you or your son. I guess this is me protecting myself too? Perhaps subconsciously, but at the forefront I feel I’m protecting you from my ambiguity. I believe I should feel more certain, and it’s not fair, especially when there’s a kid involved, and your time is more limited and precious than mine, to take a significant amount of risk. Also in the background of my mind is my therapist telling me I should be dating (not that I am) and that I get into relationships too early, but again not really the reason for me thinking it’s a bad idea to continue. I just think, for whatever reason, you deserve someone more sure.
I really enjoy my time with you too, and care about you a lot - which is why I don’t want to just walk away and never speak to you again.
But of course I understand what you’re saying, and that it’s not fair to you to just try and be friends. I respect that fully. I just wish it wasn’t the case. I think that’s why I’m saying that if you’re ever open to being in contact, I’m here, and that won’t change.

You've dodged a bullet here. It may not feel like it but you really have. I guess you still care about it because people like this never feel like they're giving a straight answer so you ruminate about it trying to figure it out. I dated a guy like this once and it made me very unhappy. Block on everything so you dont know what he's up to!

Do you reckon he left because I was secure and didnt react to his attempts at whatever he was trying to do?

I treated him as an equal, bigged him up, was supportive but also asked for clarity when something didnt add up.

My ex was very narcissistic and I did a lot of healing before I met this guy. He was aware of that so maybe felt exposed?

@Rrtoca I think you've put some identifying info in there, you might want to ask mumsnet to edit it out.

SallyCinnamon38 · 07/09/2026 19:55

Ah yes. Very likely. He'd been "seen". You sound like a very reasonable and rational person, not the right type for someone like him!!

BoogieVoogieAllNightLong · 07/09/2026 19:56

Does he like the sound of his own voice that much in person?! My eyes started to glaze over part way through all that waffle.

Yeah, lucky escape. Time will sort this one out.

Ha ha! Yes, he did. He didnt stop talking. We would talk for hours. Mostly about his life philosophies or his clinic that is still sat empty with a huge shiny sign on it outside.

Crazy how someone can be so hyper sensitive and paranoid...and crazy how someone like me (life sorted) is still obsessing silently over someone like this!

Sounds like the only thing you would benefit from would be free dental care, but i reckon the pain you’d experience by dating him would be far worse than toothache 😅

Lol text reply “I’m not reading all that”.

xD

honestly though, a narcissist by the sounds of it. You are well rid.

SmallDFartyCarNRG · 07/09/2026 20:09

He is having the last word and re-framing it in a "poor me, I am not responsible for how YOU feel because..."
He is clear that he is needy - possibly to the point no woman is going to be enough for him because he refuses to do the work on himself (clearly needs therapy)
He admits he finds you wanting to care for your child over him as a negative. He is emotionally immature and thinks he should take preference over a child for attention from it's mother (again emotionally stunted men feel women still deserve them love they think their mother didn't provide because they never go to therapy)
Let him have the 21 year old - he likes the young ones because they are easier to manipulate and make them feel they are the ones who are unreasonable or crazy. It won't last. He isn't a long term relationship kind of person and won't be until he actually recognises he is hurting other people, which he probably doesn't care about because it seems he always has to be the victim (therapy issues again).

The funny thing is, he is in therapy LOL!
Absolutely, I know all of this. I think I just need to hear it objectively from strangers, not my friends, for it to sink in.

Dont worry, I had the last word and I absolutely held him accountable to everything without dragging him down, being bitter or nasty. Just a classy empathetic schooling on how not to be a twat and I wished him the best. Did not chase, just removed myself.

It’s word salad and means nothing. You don’t get closure from misogynistic narcissistic men. Their words are designed to protect their ego and image and not to give you anything like closure. Your brain will be trying to close the loops and make sense of it, but it feels impossible because there’s nothing to make sense of. I found it helpful to journal and use chatGTP after a blindside break up. Also to run and lift - moving the body really does help to process.

Look up covert narcissism, avoidant, blindsided break ups. It is awful but there’s basically a script they follow and it’s somewhat comforting to see that it’s nothing to do with you. It’s them, and they’re probably lying to their therapists too. btw I dated a guy like your ex, very suave and educated, high level doctor, smooth and on paper a ‘catch’… but he was utterly convinced ‘all’ women were hyper gamous and monkey branching, all 40 plus men are owed 20-something wives, lots of red pill stuff came out as his mask began to slip. Would not hear a word or believe anything that I, an actual woman with lived experience, could tell him. I could not be around him once I’d seen all that lay behind the facade. He’s done you a favour. What you saw was probably the shitty tip of an iceberg.

The end of a very shorter relationship usually stings far more than a longer one.

I think it's because it ended in the exciting stage where you hadn't experienced all of their bad points quite yet, and were still full of hope they could end up being quite nice.

You've dodged a bullet, and one day when you're in a lovely relationship you'll look back and see it for exactly that.

I see this now! I know a lot about narcissism and experienced narc abuse previously, but on a lesser scale. I think this guy would have been absolutely horrendous and I did suspect narcissism very early on but I was waiting to see the pattern rather than jump to conclusions. I definitely saw a pattern and am grateful he ended it. I accepted it because I think I knew there was something off. But had he not ended it, I would have probably stayed for a while because I didnt see or experience enough to make me that uncomfortable at the time. Only looking back.....

He was obsessed with relationships, the science of attraction, living forever, he came across sometimes as feeling elite and I did question him about it and told him I dont like the words he was using to refer to other people or women he saw as 'below him'.

Very insecure vibes. But funnily enough, I never felt insecure or less than. I dont know if its because I felt safe around him or because I actually have become very secure within myself.

Its horrible isnt it, the disappointment

he probably let you go because you saw through it and were not vulnerable enough for him to control or sway. If you’ve had narc experience, there’s no unseeing it and he’ll have hated that you saw him. He’s painted a ‘hero’ image of himself in that monologue but the reality is, he wanted someone younger he could influence far easier who is impressed by his crap. Block forever, don’t let him hoover or breadcrumb

Dont get me wrong, he totally hooked me. But I guess I was as logical as I was hooked - the blindside text came after I suggested he meet my friends and spending the day at a spa when I finally became a bit more obvious with my feelings about him
