Why am I still analysing a six week relationship full of red flags?

Rrtoca · 07/09/2026 19:36

I'm 31 and was blindsided after 6 weeks with a consistent and seemingly secure man (38!).
Hes a dentist, fairly attractive, smart, and came across secure, very consistent and calm, until I felt little moments where I had to stop and take note.
He didnt really have any friends either which says a lot.

Looking back, he is a walking red flag - he began negging me, triangulating by mentioning other women who apparantly fancied him, asking me to rate him out of 10, asking if I had ever cheated, referring to himself as 'single as fuck' after being intimate, saying how younger women in their 20s are scientifically more desirable than women in their 30s and how a man of his age, status (dentist opening his own clinic) is the most desirable.

So many more very subtle minor things yet he also treated me very well. He spoke poorly of his exes, and got very defensive when a woman was talking about how men are trash, I began thinking, is this guy a misogynist??

He wanted to stay friends but I held him accountable and wished him well with a huge amount of grace and proceeded to remove him everywhere.

This was 4 weeks ago and it looks like hes moved on to a younger woman who happens to be a PT - shes 21, hes 38.

PLEASE HELP ME REFRAME THIS AS HE FUMBLED ME, I DID NOT LOSE HIM.

I KNOW I lost NOTHING. I KNOW I deserve better and he is totally useless to me. But why do I still care??

I logically know I dodged a bullet but WHY AM I STILL ANALYSING THIS?! Its been 4 weeks.

HELP ME REALISE THIS GUY IS A LITERAL TWAT.

This was his final message:

So one of the most emotionally traumatic I’ve ever been through was not getting closure after my last relationship. It was truly awful. So I’m going to share as much as I can to try and help give you that - feel free to ask as many questions as you need to.
I think the feeling of uncertainty and worry mainly comes from wanting -what I think is- an unfair amount of attention and focus, which I think you have to give to [name redacted, by MNHQ] so I feel it would be unfair to ask. I appreciate you don’t agree and would make space, but I’ve seen how much of a focus he is for you, and I feel bad for even thinking the way I do - it’s not fair on you. I don’t even think it’s something you’d be aware of day to day or moment to moment, it would just be the fact there’s someone more important than me at all times, which sounds like such a weak and petty thing, but I think it’s how I’d feel going forwards, wanting to be your number one but knowing I couldn’t be. Perhaps I’m not mature enough to deal with it, or maybe it’s from childhood traumas and not feeling it as a kid - I did touch on this in therapy, like I reach a lot, like I’m searching/yearning for connection, perhaps why I’m so affectionate. And I’m so needy that I foresee issues - I sound like a child, but I think it’s true.
I do also feel a strong sense of responsibility, and I think the whole 6 months down the line in ,and it potentially not working, as that’s a whole new variable to have to figure out, and the fact that I obviously don’t have a kid, so have no idea what that looks or feels like or what might or might not be expected of me, feels like a lot of risk, and I don’t like the idea of then being like ‘cool yeah not working for me bye’, that would be awful, and it leaves me feeling like it’s just so risky. This is less of an issue than the first thing, but certainly weighs on me as I’m not sure if I’m acting responsibly here. Which is why I came to you as soon as I could grasp that I had doubt, as I don’t want to be irresponsible with you or your son. I guess this is me protecting myself too? Perhaps subconsciously, but at the forefront I feel I’m protecting you from my ambiguity. I believe I should feel more certain, and it’s not fair, especially when there’s a kid involved, and your time is more limited and precious than mine, to take a significant amount of risk. Also in the background of my mind is my therapist telling me I should be dating (not that I am) and that I get into relationships too early, but again not really the reason for me thinking it’s a bad idea to continue. I just think, for whatever reason, you deserve someone more sure.
I really enjoy my time with you too, and care about you a lot - which is why I don’t want to just walk away and never speak to you again.
But of course I understand what you’re saying, and that it’s not fair to you to just try and be friends. I respect that fully. I just wish it wasn’t the case. I think that’s why I’m saying that if you’re ever open to being in contact, I’m here, and that won’t change.

He might as well as just written it's all abut me me me me me. I got a second hand embarrassment for him reading that cringefest .
I pity the poor 21 year old listening to that shite.
I found that people who are secure in themselves don't need to boast.

Imagine I had to listen about the exes!

One was 'too unstable to be a mother' - together 10 years, says he is the best partner shes ever had and they are like 'family now'. The other 'called him controlling and he didnt like that' but she also apparantly cheated on him and blindsided him. The girl before me was apparantly rubbish in bed and he only slept with her because his friends told him to after his breakup but he didnt actually like her...all of this made me question a lot about him.

What utter waffle from him, sorry OP.

cucumber4745 · 07/09/2026 21:25

You are analysing it because even though you clearly are working towards being securely attached, you are still anxiously attached. It is normal. I had that as well.

you say he treated you well, but the description on how he has spoken to you shows that actually no - he didn’t treat you well. The things he has said to about women is not treating you well. This is why you ruminate because you are conflicted. And you are conflicted because of the mixed messages. He is a twat. Some guys also have anxiety so I would close my eyes to smaller things but when they start explaining about how desirable and alpha they are is like persuading you that they are the prize, so you feel like you “lost” and they do you a favour being with you.. focus on you and you will let it go :)

Cotopaxi · 07/09/2026 21:29

Do you reckon he left because I was secure and didn't react to his attempts at whatever he was trying to do?...

In short, yes. He thought the negging and all the rest of it would make you desperate and do anything to keep him. You saw through it and he didn't like it.

Thank you - yeah I was confused at the time because I knew what he was doing, but I refused to shower him in validation or react because I didnt feel the need to play games. I made it clear I liked him, I complimented him where I felt genuine and I was supportive so I wasnt about to play into the insecurity to manage his emotions. I think what I meant to say is that all these behaviours were so subtle that I didnt piece them together until towards the end. He was never overtly nasty and was so people pleasey with me - which again I asked him why he was always being so nice

Run a mile. Then when you think you’ve ran far enough away, run some more.

SergeantWrinkles · 07/09/2026 21:34

Oh god I had a really similar situation years ago with one of these op! I was just the same! Couldn’t work out why he’d got under my skin! You’ve definitely dodged a bullet! What a narcissist!

Sodthesystem · 07/09/2026 20:05

Lol text reply “I’m not reading all that”.

xD

honestly though, a narcissist by the sounds of it. You are well rid.

Or ‘OK 👌🏼’ which invites no further comment.

hobbledyhoy · 07/09/2026 21:53

Sorry couldn’t read the entirety of the message as he bored the arse of me after a few sentences.

It’s the rejection that’s making you focus on it, whereas had you ended it after him soliloquising on his personal philosophies and generally being a twat, it wouldn’t have bothered you so much.

Be thankful the universe has gifted you a reprieve early on and enjoy the peace from him.

Justanopinionnothingmore · 07/09/2026 23:03

What a load of self serving twaddle.

How on earth can you respect or want a nobhead who sends long paragraphs like that? It should surely permanently seal any woman's bits together!

Just be so glad you don't have to put up with this nobber and feel very sorry for the 21 year old. He will be an utter head fuck with her. Look what he's done to you after 6 weeks.

Please as soon as anyone says anything remotely wankerish to you again, send them packing.

whippersnapper55 · 08/09/2026 08:03

I didn't even get to the end of his waffly message! Honestly OP, don't give this loser any more headspace - just be glad you're well out of it! When you find your thoughts turning to him, distract! Keeping busy, seeing friends, exercise, reorganising your wardrobe...anything to stop yourself thinking about him! He is not worth the time or attention you're giving it.

BoogieVoogieAllNightLong · 08/09/2026 11:02

Rrtoca · 07/09/2026 19:58

Ha ha! Yes, he did. He didnt stop talking. We would talk for hours. Mostly about his life philosophies or his clinic that is still sat empty with a huge shiny sign on it outside.

We would talk, or he would talk?

I'm picturing him going on about himself for at least an hour and then saying, "But that's enough about me! Let's talk about you. What do YOU think about me?!" 🙄

Friendlygingercat · 08/09/2026 11:08

If someone I was dating sent me an email that long I would assume he was writing a novel and tell him to get an AI to critique it. Chatbots are wonderful at jobs like that.

JoyousWriter · 08/09/2026 22:01

What an absolutely wanky message.

Laura95167 · 08/09/2026 22:30

JFC. Congratulations OP!!

Hes SO self-involved.. and no way did his therapist tell him he should date.

Hes jealous of your child. He cant take rejection and he wants you to pet him and praise him like puppy. Hahahaha, God the favour hes done you!

Do yourself a favour have zero questions on his message.. this poor 21 year old will cotton on soon enough.

Congratulations again, the time you saved is really worth being grateful for!!

Rrtoca · 07/09/2026 19:52

Do you reckon he left because I was secure and didnt react to his attempts at whatever he was trying to do?

I treated him as an equal, bigged him up, was supportive but also asked for clarity when something didnt add up.

My ex was very narcissistic and I did a lot of healing before I met this guy. He was aware of that so maybe felt exposed?

I think hes the type of man who doesnt like himself and addresses it by dragging others down.

If he couldnt make you feel small and insecure it wouldn't have worked for him

Smallestshadow · 08/09/2026 22:35

Have you posted about this before? I remember from your son’s name being mentioned- you should edit it out.

Mumlaplomb · 08/09/2026 22:38

Lucky escape there OP he sounds a real plonker x

Minasama · 08/09/2026 22:43

Look, when it works, it isn’t complicated. You don’t have to think about this one any more. I’m in my fifties and I wouldn’t be interested in a man who needed therapy and talked about it (except bereavement counselling.)

Why not? Because there are plenty of people out there who are not complicated and don’t need therapy and constant introspection.,

I do think however that it was wrong of you to post his entire message on a public site like this. If he spoke from the heart, he does not deserve to have this shared.

imsoverytired82 · 08/09/2026 22:46

Don’t waste time dissecting his message. He sounds like a self obsessed navel gazing knobhead.

Thisisnottheone · 08/09/2026 22:52

What a bore. No 21 year old is staying with him if she has ANY sense.
