I'll make this short. I have a difficult relationship with my parents for various reasons - mostly un interest on their part, completely different value systems (me walking away from their religion and what they wanted for me career and life wise), emotional immaturity on their part, and hurt on my part.
I vacillate between thinking that they truly do care for me and wanting their approval, to wanting nothing to do with them.
I want to go low contact, but we live in the same city. I don't want to be a jerk, but I also just want to avoid their toxicity and how they make me feel when I'm around them (invisible, unloveable, and not important.) I'd like to have an honest conversation about how their behaviour makes me feel, but I've tried that my whole life and it goes nowhere.
My avoidance of them will likely come as a surprise as I've tried to be intentional about spending time with them (that backfired). For example, I used to invite them regularly to my kids sports activities. I know that they will ask to come again, but I no longer want them to. Me making excuses and saying no will likely create tension.
What do I do then?
