How long would you keep dating someone who you feel is not quite right for you?

Trying to find the right way to explain how I am feeling here.
i guess my question is how long would you ‘date’ someone when you have a feeling they are not really the one for you but also are nice and kind etc
im dating a guy for around 8 months, for many reasons I feel we are not compatible in the long run and I also feel by this stage my feelings should have grown more towards loving them and they haven’t.
but he’s nice company, the sex is good etc
do I just call it a day now as I’m sure this won’t be a long term thing? We haven’t talked massively about our feelings and the future but I’m impression is that he thinks this is ‘it’ for him.

You need to stop stringing him along if he’s hoping it will develop. But if he knows the score then it’s up to him if he wants to carry on for a while, or not.
Just be truthful.

Why aren’t you compatible? If you want something casual then being compatible long term doesn’t really come into it.
I think you’re confusing what you want.
Or in a situationship that has just gone on too long.
I generally know after 3-4 dates whether I want to see someone more, sometimes sooner.
I wouldn’t stay for 8 months if I didn’t want them long term. And you shouldn’t either.

I think you need to be honest with him. It’s not fair on him.
