First holiday without exH and it’s such a revelation

I’m in Europe in the middle of a heatwave with preschool twins and a preteen, which I know doesn’t sound promising. But honestly it’s been wonderful.

We houseswapped with a friend, so it’s a two week break for the price of a (cheap) flight. We’re eating all the ice creams and easy meals we want, which they love. Every evening I spend five minutes looking for another water park, paddling pool, museum or similar, book it, job done. There’s no needing to pander to ex’s shit ideas or have to explain to an apparently experienced parent why a 1h30 commute across the city to a slightly nicer pool isn’t worth it.

There’s less crying at home, because my ex has a way of misreading or winding the kids up that I just don’t. I’m not Mary Poppins but they go off, play, bit of tv, generally listen. It’s been fine.

When we were together ex had (possibly inadvertently) a bit of a monopoly on planning, travel etc, with the effect that I didn’t have confidence in doing it myself. Actually, shock horror, a functioning adult with a smartphone can manage just fine. And the transport here is amazing and air conditioned.

There is no quibbling over cooking (I always did all of it anyway), or how long it takes to sort the kitchen in the evening (ten minutes, I’ve no idea why my ex made such a production over it, daily, for a decade). I don’t have to listen to him using every other country as an opportunity to complain about how much he dislikes the UK.

We’re at a pool this morning that has a 45cm of water bit for the younger two and a deeper bit for the older one. On the way here we stopped at a supermarket and they each chose whatever they wanted as a snack (€3 of jelly beans, it turned out). I bought an iced coffee. We’ll be here for an hour or two, then home on a short bus ride, sandwich lunch, rest in the hottest part of the day, then out to a playground later. I have genuinely never been happier.

That sounds lovely for you and the kids. In my case it was so nice not to have a second “child” demanding attention and being miserable especially if there was no TV and it was always too hot ! My DS is adult now and I go with friends and it’s fabulous to just think about me 😀

Anonanonanonagain · 04/08/2026 08:44

I have never had a second parent around to help with anything and I have long since been of the belief that parenting alone is much easier than parenting with a man around. One of my siblings has less kids than me and finds her life far harder and she has a lovely husband but somehow life seems harder for her so I assume its the extra baggage of the hubbie. I have taken the kids on holidays all over the world alone and while it would be nice to have adult company that really is the only difference but of course I dont have to share the wine either as its just me.

Sounds like a fantastic holiday. Enjoy every second :)

PeonyPanda · 04/08/2026 08:47

That sounds lovely, and I’m sorry your ex was an arse. I think some people expect kids to fit with their lives, and others adjust what they find fulfilling to meet their kids needs and take joy from that. If there’s no give and take, someone’s always going to be unhappy.

frecklejuice · 04/08/2026 08:50

This sounds perfect and I’m so glad you’re all enjoying it.

I wish I could tag another poster in this because a lady posted the other day about going on holiday with her partner and he sounds horrendous, I hope she reads this and realises that she can do it on her own.

Enjoy your holiday ❤️

Lilypad789 · 04/08/2026 08:51

Everything is so much easier when they’re not there! I’m so happy for you.

Bristolandlazy · 04/08/2026 08:56

That's living the dream, sounds wonderful, enjoy 🏊🌞🍷🍦🍉

fairislecable · 04/08/2026 08:58

This is so good to read.

He has allowed you to find the person inside. Lopping him off means you can grow and flourish in confidence and become the strong person, instead of compromising all the time.

I hope this is seen by all the other young women struggling through.

MargoisanA1arsehole · 04/08/2026 09:02

That sounds idyllic! Our daughter is grown now, and I do love my husband, but honestly I’d love to just once do something like this. I’m very jealous! Have a great time!

Coreiscore · 04/08/2026 09:04

Good for you op! Sounds like you’ve dropped about 12 stone of useless dead weight and are now free ❤️

13RidgmontRoad · 04/08/2026 09:04

@Anonanonanonagain I have found a good podcast series and brought my headphones for the evenings. It’s obviously not proper company but it’s given me adult conversation in earshot, as it were.

I feel the same! I split up from my exDH two years ago. We have teenagers. The couple of holidays I have had since then with just me and the dc have been eye opening!

Holidays used to be sooo stressful with my ex - from packing the car, driving or flying - there was always so much stress. Then when we were there - the arguments about where to go, not wanting to spend money, drive anywhere, getting angry if asked to help with food preparation or clearing up. He had to always find problems or something to be in a mood about.

Now it's all so different - the kids and I just relax and have fun. Everything just seems to flow smoothly, it's the total opposite to when my ex was there. I do miss adult company sometimes but the peace definitely makes up for it!

ShannonMacFarland · 04/08/2026 09:09

I'm a single mum of one and I've often noticed how much more chilled we are on holiday than families with two parents who sit there arguing, ignoring each other or shouting at the kids.

Writer034 · 04/08/2026 09:22

I've just come back from a week away with my 13 and 15 year old, and it's been bliss. I'm very fortunate in that my DP is a good traveller and gets on amazing with my kids (he's not their DF), but even so spending some quality time just the three of us has been like 'chicken soup for the soul' as that old book was titled. We got on so well, and everything felt extremely easy. So, totally get where you're coming from, enjoy your freedom!

I have been divorced from first husband for 29 years. I found that being alone in a room whilst my young children were asleep upstairs was far,far less lonely than being in a room with a man who didnt want to be there ( and was trying to think of an excuse to pop out and find a phone box to ring his 17 year old girlfriend (1990s). Enjoy the space in your head and the freedom in your soul Op.

Cornishclio · 04/08/2026 09:27

That sounds brilliant. There are a few threads on here about men behaving terribly on holiday, not doing their fair share and generally trying to control what everyone does. Luckily my DH is a go with the flow type of person so no drama. Enjoy your holiday and well done for ditching the high maintenance ex. Sounds like you are doing fine.

13RidgmontRoad · 04/08/2026 09:33

Just remembered another thing - we’d be ready to leave the house and suddenly he’d decide he was hungry or need a tactical shit. Cue a mad panic when he was eventually ready because now we were late for something. It just doesn’t happen now. I get things ready, I give the kids a five minute countdown for whatever they are doing, we go.

A “tactical shit”?? Oh god, that made me laugh but also gag a bit at the same time!!

Otterloverfrenchielady · 04/08/2026 09:49

Enjoy your peace, kids, and ice latte op :)

babasaclover · 04/08/2026 10:00

@13RidgmontRoadabsolutely love this post. Well done you for having a proper life after xxx

Brightbluesomething · 04/08/2026 18:15

Sounds fabulous! I’ve just come back from a break with my DD14 and found exactly the same. We had a brilliant chilled time, no stress or arguments and thoroughly enjoyed it being just the two of us. Having to pander to the moods of a grown man in the mix was so stressful and it’s not anymore. Also decided to go all inclusive so I had a break from cooking which helped too.

Mumdiva99 · 04/08/2026 18:20

Where are you because it sounds a fab destination. Have a great rest of your holiday.

bringonyourwreckingball · 04/08/2026 18:30

My kids are older so easier anyway and more like adult company but OMG yes. Not having to pander to exh’s moods, his tendency to blame everyone else if anything went wrong and his absolute insistence we get to the airport at least 4 hours before the flight. Holidays are now genuinely enjoyable. Every holiday reminds me I do not miss the arsehole one bit.

Vienna. Honestly, I couldn’t recommend it more highly for kids this age. Playgrounds on every corner, brilliant public pools that are thoughtfully designed, excellent transport, museums which even at capacity feel spacious and comfortable.

The absolute cherry on the cake today was learning that when you turn up at the equivalent of Paddington Station on your way to “Heathrow” you can check your luggage in right there and it goes straight to your plane’s hold. Cannot even.

Kids are all in bed after a great day. It was very hot here this afternoon so we didn’t do much beyond the local supermarket but they had a go at the magical bottle recycling machine which refunds you for empties, chose a few things for tomorrow and then I plonked the younger two in the bath to cool them down. Bit of TV, easy dinner, job done.
