Would these comments and behaviours be reasonable deal breakers in dating?

I've was dating someone for a few months (met on Hinge, mid 40s)and am reflecting on my standards and self-esteem in the wake of it ending. Which, if any, would be deal breakers or have caused you serious concern?

-made a few silly sexual jokes whilst messaging, before we met eg..I asked him if he played a musical instrument and he made a joke about wanking
-first date in a coffee shop, I removed a long sleeved top as was too warm (had another top on underneath obvs) and he went "wahaaayyy" as if I was stripping
-made a joke about all women having a base level of psycho
-referred to disabled people as "Scopey"
-met a colleague of min at a works do and told me she was "rough" and this is why he doesn't date women from her area
-despite the fact he is on amicable terms with his ex wife, told me laughingly, when she asked for a divorce, that he had called her a "fat old witch" and threatened to take her pension
-told me inappropriate details about his ex including that she was restricted in sexual positions she could do due to bad hip and that she could orgasm immediately from anal sex (he told me this whilst we were in bed by way of praising my comparative flexibility)
-said "You look lovely in your dress; my ex wife never wore them because of her body type"
-met an acquaintance of mine and said "You're naturally beautiful, not like women like that who plaster on the make up"
-when I was trying to encourage him to get o know me better and asked if there was anything he wanted to know about me (cause I had tried to ask him lots about himself) he said "What is the smallest penis out there have encountered?
-told me, in bed, that he had yet to encounter a smelly vagina
-told me he had dumped a woman as her pubic hair was too long (after avoiding having sex with her for weeks)
-shortly after we began a sexual relationship, told me he thought genitals in general were gross and then was annoyed with me when I went a bit quiet and distant for a few minutes after he said that
-first time we had sex, he seemed clueless despite being married before and many relationships. He kissed me for a while and I was expecting some foreplay (I know I could have initiated this but I had lead on taking him up to my bedroom and removing clothes so didn't want to lead ointment everything). Without so much as touching me intimately, he entered me without a condom. He stopped as soon as I told him to and was visibly upset and said he thought I had wanted it as we were naked and he was laying on top of me. He was genuinely upset and I ended up comforting him!
-I disclosed to him that I had been sexually assaulted in a previous relationship. Despite this, he sent me a GIF that appeared to be of a woman being assaulted, face down on the floor and crying..looked like really rough porn but you could only see her face.
-he had some very laddish mates and he said he didn't judge them for sleeping with prostitutes although it was not something he would do. Told me they had all been giggling in the pub about some story about a woman with a massive anus.
-in a weird coincidence, a mate of his turned up at my house to collect something I had listed on marketplace. He arrived 15 minutes earlier that agreed and ex and I were in bed. When ex realised who it was, he got dressed and said hi his mate. he later told me that the incident had been the subject of joking on their group WhatsApp, with one them writing "He was just pulling out of her as he arrived!"

I felt unsettled with him lot. Would the above reasonably explain that? I have very poor self esteem and anxious attachment style and I am trying to work out if there were reasons outside of that which would make others feel insecure in this dynamic. He was affectionate, attractive, a good dad, good to his mum, a professional, kind to animals, funny, lots of friends and very keen on me. He would send gushing messages and romantic songs and GIFs a lot. He seemed quite future -focused with wanting to progress the relationship quickly. He made me feel very chosen. He was not the type to ask me things about how many men I had slept and liked natural-looking women. So there were lots of good things about him too.

He sounds fucking vile and borderline dangerous.

Temporal · 28/07/2026 17:37

He sounds like an immature adolescent. Oh, and an almighty, f#cking prick as well.

Dreamcatcherat50 · 28/07/2026 18:03

Your deal breakers are your own. They don't have to be reasonable to anyone else.

The things you've shared about him are beyond disgusting. He's horrible and unsafe and you should get rid of him immediately. I know that will be difficult.

Please consider therapy in order to find out why you had to ask if you're being unreasonable.

ChaToilLeam · 28/07/2026 18:03

Think you are well rid, love.

Cuppachuchu · 28/07/2026 18:09

You told him you had been a SA victim.
Then he sent you a GIF...... of a woman being sexually assaulted.
Do you really have to ask?

theresnolimits · 28/07/2026 18:12

He’s vile. None of this is normal. Please move on

I know. It sounds bad and i tried to minimise it. He had been irritated with me. I sent a sweet message during the working day saying I was really looking forward to seeing him later. He responded with a a GIF of Samuel L Jackson which said “Tik Tok Mother Fucker.” That felt unpleasant, especially as I was facing quite an emotional weekend with a sick relative. I responded by saying “How romantic” which I guess was a little sarcastic. He then responded with “Is this better?” and there was the GIF. As I said, you could only see the woman’s face but it was clear that it was from porn and depicting painful sex. Her face was turned to the side, on the floor, and she was crying in pain. This would be his dark humour… but he knew about my SA past and what I was facing that weekend. This is not a GIF that exists in WhatsApp so he had clearly taken it from porn

Try not to internalise any of this but realise that you are not seeing the world in a way that protects you.

@asparagusheavenThis is so true and you've phrased it brilliantly. It's exactly why so many people, me too in the past, just do not notice what's abundantly clear to others when it comes to abusive behaviour.

category12 · 28/07/2026 18:26

It sounds bad because it is bad.

He went out of his way to send you something disgusting and triggering.

It's not "dark humour", it's sadistic and vile.

What's funny about rape?

Cuppachuchu · 28/07/2026 18:47

After the first thing on your list, the response to your musical instrument question, I would have thought this is not a man I want to meet. You were strangers, trying to see if you liked each other enough to meet. Wanking jokes are not the way to impress a woman. They are "bloke talk". He is an idiot. Crude and not worth your time. Don't even try to analyse it.
You sound like an intelligent woman.
Unfortunately, you have lowered your standards to his, overlooked his many glaring red flags and so given him the green light to continue. Put it behind you and learn from it.

RedflagGreenflag · 27/07/2026 18:43

But what about all the good stuff about him? He was kind to his mum by taking her to appointments looking after her cats and had his son 50% of the time and protected that time (as in, not off dating when he had his son but fully present).

This is the most concerning part of this, these are really not exceptional things he should be applauded for these are basic things every human should do. I’m curious, if a woman took her parent to appointments and had their child half of the time would it warrant praise?

That's him punishing you for "irritating" him.

PetulaGordeno · 28/07/2026 19:09

I met one it those, didn’t last but I felt unsettled for a long time afterwards. He did the going inside me without warning/no condom and I when I jumped away he cried.
Absolute prick.
Took a while for me to get over it and my skin crawls now.
He pointed out women on the TV once and asked his young daughters who was sexist - Amanda Holden or Petula? Grim.

That’s not dark humour. That’s a sick, dangerous individual.

Your blood should have ran cold at that.

He’s dangerous do you know that?

Sodthesystem · 28/07/2026 19:34

I’m a little bit worried op. I mean this is really really bad and it makes me wonder about what tou might tolerate in future. Becuase this guy is the sort of man who murders women and you really need to know that.

I think it might be best to stay single. At least for a couple more years and spend that time reading up on and watching everything you can find on how to spot abuse. Becuase it really feels like you’re quite vulnerable atm and people like him can see that a mile away.

ThatCyanCat · 28/07/2026 19:36

I got to this in the OP:

first time we had sex, he seemed clueless

and actually laughed, because of course. But it's not funny, and it got worse and worse and worse.

StMarie4me · 28/07/2026 19:49

Every single one would be a deal breaker for me. However I would never have gone on a date with someone that made a comment about wanking in messages.

He hinted at it. We were messaging about music and I I think had told him my children play piano and asked him if he played an instrument. He made some remark about how he was going to have made a naughty joke but thought better of it 🤦‍♀️. In no way had the chat been sexual at all before that and this was before the first date .

OP posts:
Sodthesystem · 28/07/2026 20:58

Really hoping he hasn’t been anywhere near your kids.

Seriously op. What’s the game plan? Because your best bet would be to dump him by text. He’s not gonna like it but, tough, you don’t owe him anything more. Your safety has to be priority.

Laura95167 · 28/07/2026 21:12

I wouldnt have sex with some using the term "scopey" about disabled people.

The comments in bed about your vagina and his wife liking anal are also exceptionally vile

The rest is varying degrees of horrible.

BUT

I think its important to say 1. Yes thats a fine list of horrors to send him on his way 2. You dont need a reasonable or justifiable reason to sack someone off. You can leave him for any reason regardless of how daft you may consider it

Why would you continue to see someone who did this? I genuinely don’t understand.

lottiestars76 · 28/07/2026 21:37

The sexual joke via text would have been the boundary for me , sounds like a teenager who’s insecure and trying to compensate , just such a huge turn off. So the rest definitely not overreacting if anything under reacting and like I’ve said I would have blocked and never met for a first date

lottiestars76 · 28/07/2026 21:43

RedflagGreenflag · 27/07/2026 18:47

Isn’t that good stuff?

Good stuff is irrelevant when the list of his cons is so disturbing vile and misogynistic. He could be the most wonderful man but then make sexual jokes via text and then I’m out. You don’t get to be a sexist pig but still get on with your ex and be kind to your mum and therefore be absolved of all the shitty stuff. Also maybe explains why you put up with it for so long, if you excuse the shit because of a few ‘ nice’ things ( which, are bare minimum, scraping the barrel type of things btw he shouldn’t be applauded for being a normal okay -ish human) then you will stay trapped with an awful man purely because he helps his mum with things and gets along with ex sooo.

MoonWoman69 · 28/07/2026 21:47

Christ almighty, get away from this creep and sort your self esteem out before getting into another relationship! Are you very naive when it comes to relationships and standards? Nobody on the whole of MN would put up with one of these traits, let alone a list an arm long!
He is absolutely vile and you need to end this relationship! You are worth more than this and I can't believe you even slept with him after all that!
Wishing you luck!
