Money and other major issues in a newish relationship

I'm a woman in a relationship with a man I met around 18 months ago. We are boyfriend and girlfriend to each other, which I think sounds a bit silly as we're both getting on a bit. I'm 55 and he's 63. He started referring to me as his partner a few months back and I suppose that's a more adult way to describe us. What I'm trying to say is we have agreed to be exclusive. I met him through a mutual friend, although her husband knows him mainly through working with him, not socially.

In my head, this is still an early stage of getting to know each other. We see each other 2 or 3 times a week, it can be less depending on our respective work schedules and other commitments. There are certain things I've noticed and I'm not sure if I'm over reacting.

He seems very interested in a commitment in the sense of me moving in with him. He is in the process of buying a brand new house, he's fairly financially secure, although once he has bought it, he will have used up almost all of his savings. He's mentioned it a few times and I've said I don't want that, I have my own home which is paid off and I don't want to be married again. We are both divorced and I don't want to go through that hoopla again.

He knows I am happy with how things are and that is unlikely to change. Over the weekend I wanted to treat him to a nice meal and he said something along the lines of you should keep your money, save it. When I said it was fine to splurge a little, we're talking nothing really over 20 pounds for each person, he said "as partners, what you do with your finances also affects me though".

I should have said something at the time, but I was fairly flabbergasted by his assumption that he could have a say in what I do with my money and that it impacts him in any way at all. I have to add that he also knows I am set to inherit around 200 k from a deceased uncle.

We went out yesterday just to pick up some stuff for our respective houses, a 6 mile drive there and back and he complained about the price of fuel going up again.

Earlier on, in the first few months together, he made a few miserly type comments about spending. I was understanding as I know he went through a difficult divorce and was paying a lot of maintenance. My divorce was not so hard on me, but I do understand how difficult it was for him.

The other thing that's happening is no sex. Again, we're both older, but he seems completely unable to get a proper erection. Again, I'm understanding, it isn't everything, but we've had sex twice early on and then never again. And it was really unsatisfying, the chemistry just doesn't seem to be there. A couple of times I have had to tell him to shower before we are intimate in any other way... but he doesn't really seem interested in me performing oral sex on him or anything else. Sometimes he pleasures me and it can be good. So I've given up on a sex life at age 55... some days I'm OK with it, others not so OK...

Which leads me onto his masturbation habit. I did snoop and he seems to use porn, Instagram etc. a lot. Kind of in spurts a few times a week before or after work. I asked him about it and he said it doesn't affect his attraction to me. He gets frustrated and it takes him hours to orgasm using porn. Some of the porn is light BDSM, with some male domination. I quite like that but he never wants to do anything like that with me. It seems he only wants to watch it.

It gets worse. Yesterday, when we were out, we stopped off for coffee. A bunch of teenage girls came in, he could not take his eyes off one of them. He even commented that he had a birds eye view of teenage girl behaviour and how interesting it was. In the supermarket the other day he said OMG look how tight that girl's leggings are, you can see everything! I've noticed he sometimes stares and stares at bottoms, he seems to like a lot of upskirt porn.

I need to walk, don't I?

I can't help thinking of Withnail shouting "Scrubbers!" at the schoolgirls they drive past, then "Little tarts, they love it."

Dweetfidilove · 29/07/2026 10:53

There's so much wrong with him ☹️

IAmNotMyJobTitle · 29/07/2026 12:23

You also don’t need to go into any explanation as to why you are finishing it.
“It’s not working for me” should suffice.

PetulaGordeno · 29/07/2026 12:24

Get your stuff and get away from this pig.

Hazlenuts · 29/07/2026 14:14

Unintentional drip feed here. I've just seen his Facebook friends list. Not very many..... however there are three teenagers in there that he doesn't know from Adam! All look highly similar, pixie like features, very long, light blonde hair. And one profile, her cover photo, she is standing in her ballerina outfit and doesn't look more than 14 or 15. He has clearly sought them out.... two he is actually following.

Yuk yuk yuk... His children are all adults... these are not friends of friends. What the hell is he doing befriending these unknowns? Two of them are in Australia! He has no relatives there. No friends. He must be masturbating to their photos!

Well I had already made my mind up. Once this work week is out of the way, I'll be heading over to get my things and blocking this horrible person from my life.

I was single for many years before I met him and I love my own company. I'd love to meet a good man, but hanging around with this one is NOT how it's going to happen!

Whatbloodysummer · 29/07/2026 14:50

Why wait until the work week is over OP?

Just pop over and collect your stuff. He'll be tired after work so at least you'll get less hassle or anything, just say you need a couple of things for this week and then once you've got your stuff you can dump him however you want?

Hazlenuts · 29/07/2026 14:52

It's just hard to fit it in around work and my caring responsibilities, plus I also do volunteer work.

I have a feeling these young girls are AI models. As in fictional. How creepy. Let’s hope they are because that’s marginally better than following real ones.

Nearly50omg · 29/07/2026 21:48

He’s a vile peadophile

Kitkate21 · 29/07/2026 22:32

Put that one back in the pool! And well done to you for being sensible about your finances so many women aren't and it bites us in the butt

Update. I've met with him, explained I don't feel we're compatible at all, didn't go into any further details particularly. He wasn't all that upset, said he couldn't really understand as he felt we got on well but I didn't have the will or the energy to explain. Pointless really. Just thought let him go and crack on. All I said was I was tired of not feeling desired and I want a sex life and honesty and transparency in a relationship and he just went very quiet.

I got my things and the past couple of days he has texted me asking how I am and I just said yes fine, he said he was fine about it too.

Now he has turned passive aggressive in his messages. Time to ignore and block really. There's absolutely zero need to keep in touch with each other. Few days back a text "how are things?" and a photo of a huge cream cake followed by another of half of it eaten. For the past month I have been on kind of a diet as I've been eating way too much fat and sugar and I used to be very sporty, swimming, running, judo, weights, riding, snowboarding, climbing and was always strong and lean. Now I have a bit of a paunch and decided time to change. I've lost at least 5 pounds so far simply from cutting right back on my usual rubbish of Mr Kiplings and chocolate... ahem.. sometimes for breakfast 😂He was trying to do the same as he is at a very high risk for diabetes and heart disease. It felt like a F... You......

Then yesterday a video of an old lady with many cats and the tag line... "when women get to a certain age, they start to collect cats..." There was some other joke about older women and what I think is a really nasty image, a GIF of an overweight woman jumping off a yacht and a huge wave knocking the boat over.

Clearly he's trying to make me feel like rubbish about myself but it hasn't worked. It's simply more evidence of the utter twat that he is.

WelshRabBite · Yesterday 13:22

Block him.

He’s a misogynist twat who is reacting badly to being dumped.

Move forward with your life, you’ll be much happier without him.

Bonkers1966 · Yesterday 13:33

At least you had the chat so well done for cutting him loose. Yes he is being a dickhead but that's the male ego at work. Onwards and upwards OP.

KarenNextDoor · Yesterday 13:46

Just block him on everything and move on!

Meadowfinch · Yesterday 13:49

LividSummery · 27/07/2026 14:52

I'd be gone for the up skirting alone.

And the lack of sex.

And the miserliness.

And the not respecting you not wanting to move in.

And the looking at teenage girls.

And basically get the hell away from him.

This. I’m the same age as you and the thought of the next 30 years without sex is depressing enough but a man telling me how I am allowed to spend my £20. Err, no.

Thank him kindly for his time but say it isn’t working for you, and walk away.

category12 · Yesterday 15:05

What a dick.

Well done on dumping him 👏

CheeseyOnionPie · Yesterday 15:13

He sounds like a dirty old man who is hoping to use you for financial security and a care-giver in his old age. There doesn’t seem to be any positive for you in this relationship.

Make quickly for the exit and don’t look back.

CheeseyOnionPie · Yesterday 15:21

Just read the rest of OP’s posts and it’s refreshing to see an OP actually go ahead and dump the useless man from her life.

His obvious and pathetic attempts to make you feel bad are just laughable.

Nearly50omg · Yesterday 15:24

I’d also report him to the police as someone they need to keep an eye on!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · Yesterday 18:48

Ahahahahaha
cat lady memes???
What a fucking loser!!!

delete and block.

Beachtastic · Yesterday 18:59

Oh well done, OP!

Gosh, he certainly knows how to charm doesn't he 🫣

What a loser.

This exactly, he wanted her to move in, keep house and care for him. Whilst contributing her own hard earned cash.

But no respect, sex or fun.

Yuk. Well done OP.

Hopefulsalmon · Yesterday 19:52

Well done OP! He's really showing his petty true colours now - block him and never think of him again.

Temporal · Yesterday 22:34

What? Of course, you need to dump this repugnant old duffer. He sounds absolutely awful. You deserve better.

ConstitutionHill · Yesterday 23:02

Yep. Walk! The cost of fuel comments may not mean much but the other stuff? Not having sex/hygiene and the pervy teen comments. I'd end it and let him know why.
