Boyfriend kissed another girl drunk…do I forgive him?

Myself (f26) and my boyfriend (m25) have been together for 6 years, we are each others best friends, and are so compatible.

We have had a wonderful relationship, he is a really stand up guy, and a really great person. We have no doubts about spending a future with each other. We have been in a bit of a rough spot lately, stressing a fair amount over the past month about some differences in communication. He’s a more reserved guy, and sometimes I like a bit more reassurance. I’ve communicated to him that I’d like him to be a bit more communicative generally and he has been really receptive, but there’s been some emotional distance and we have been going through conversations about whether the relationship is right for us at this time.

We have both said that we want it to work, but it’s been a really tough month, arguably the hardest period in our relationship.

During that month, he got completely drunk, and ended up flirting with and subsequently having a brief song with a girl he bumped into that he knew from years ago. He then walked away, regretted it entirely (he says), went to find his friend that he had gotten separated from and they went home. Nothing further happened and nothing has happened since between them (no contact or anything).

We then had some more conversations and decided that the relationship was worth fighting for and that we would bridge the gap in communication together. We had 2 fantastic weeks of connection and intimacy in the bedroom completely reignited, as we hadn’t had much for a few months in a stressful period.

Only issue is, I found out becuase I was looking through his WhatsApp for a confirmation code for something we were trying to book, and I happened to scroll too far down and saw that a chat had been muted. I got suspicious, clicked on and saw he had exchanged a handful (maybe 6 in total) messages with this girl where she was flirting with him, and he was flirting back.

my world ended. We had a huge fight (he was very very remorseful) and I said that I needed space, and haven’t spoken to him in 2 weeks. We are talking Saturday, he’s been quite reserved on the few messages we have exchanged (I think to give me space) and ultimately we will work through the issues and decide if we should continue.

I am unsure as to whether I could forgive him. The kiss itself is sort of crap but I would move past that, however it’s the not being up front about it to me. I truly believe that he would never do this again, and that this is completely uncharacteristic of him, but I would worry about taking him back and having it happen again.

any advice? I’m obviously hugely in love with him and picture a future with him…

You can do better.

You deserve better.

You already know this.

GOODCAT · 22/07/2026 21:00

No, don't

Honeyhonayboo · 22/07/2026 21:00

Frankly if he cheats on you during a mild rough patch in your 20s with no stand out life stresses he will cheat on you again.

ChipDaleRescueRangers · 22/07/2026 21:01

No, dont forgive a cheater!

You got together so young, go out and live a better life without this cheater in it. Yes it will hurt, it will sting like a bitch, but hold your head up high and know you are better than him.

TisEye · 22/07/2026 21:01

Nope. It's done.

AMillionTomorrows · 22/07/2026 21:01

cut your losses. Find someone who respects you.

Ibi · 22/07/2026 21:06

Would you kiss someone else? If you did, would you be ok getting back together? As long as you’re on the same wavelength, then I think it’s fine.

YourOliveBalonz · 22/07/2026 21:08

Are you hoping for responses telling you to carry on? You’ve already said “We have no doubts about spending a future with each other.” Haven’t you therefore already decided to forgive him? You don’t have a future without both forgiveness and trust (or at least not a happy future).

You also contradict yourself “I truly believe that he would never do this again, and that this is completely uncharacteristic of him, but I would worry about taking him back and having it happen again.”

You either truly believe he would never do this again, or you worry he would do it again, you can’t mean the first if you fear the latter. I think you know you can’t trust him you are just struggling to admit it to yourself right now because then you know it has to be finished. For what it’s worth you are still so young and there’s no need to settle for less.

Francine84 · 22/07/2026 21:09

So he kissed someone else, didn’t tell you, and then sent flirty messages afterwards?

That doesn’t sound like a drunken mistake. You’ll never be able to trust him if this is how he behaves during a rough patch in your relationship.

SouthLondonMum22 · 22/07/2026 21:11

Not a chance. He's only remorseful because he was found out.

I'd never be able to trust him again.

IronEverything · 22/07/2026 21:16

He's got you brainwashed. Of course things were great for 2 weeks afterwards, he was on his best behaviour. He is a bog standard manipulative cheater.

havingoneofthosedays · 22/07/2026 21:18

What was wrong with the advise you got when you posted this yesterday

Bakeittillyoumakeit · 22/07/2026 21:20

So if he just randomly bumped into her and then there was no contact between then after that, when did the flirty messages happen?

The trust is gone OP, I don't think you'll ever be happy in this relationship now.

VanessaFence · 22/07/2026 21:20

Sadly I think you got together too young. I was with someone for 6 years that I met age 19. It ended after huge fights caused by one of us flirting or getting too emotionally entwined with a work colleague (never as bad as actually kissing someone else though). Ultimately we were practically kids when we got together and we both, deep down, needed to experience what it was like to be single.

I think you need to step away and be on your own for a bit. If it's really meant to be you will find each other again, maybe even years later. Your boyfriend is scratching an itch right now and I'm afraid it will only get worse.

Growlybear83 · 22/07/2026 21:31

If you really thought you couldn’t forgive him, then you wouldn’t have started this thread. Once the trust has gone in a relationship I don’t think you can ever get it back.

Notquitethetruth · 22/07/2026 21:37

Were the messages before or after the snog? If before was the meet planned? If after then he wasn't honest with you.
How did you find out about this snog?
There seems to be more to this than he has told you, including the muting of the chat.

Don't excuse his behaviour away because of his age. He's 25, not 15. I was married at that age and a lot of people on here have been with their husbands or partners since that age or younger and managed not to cheat.

whippersnapper55 · 23/07/2026 06:39

If you truly believe that he would never do this again, what are you worried about? The truth is you know deep down that you can't trust him and if the relationship continues you're always going to be wondering what he's up to!

Velvetandleather · 23/07/2026 07:31

Your post is a little garbled, you keep going on about how neither of you have any doubts, then telling us there is lots of doubts, cheating, lying and prolonged conversations, it can’t be both,

it feels like you desperately want the relationship to work, but he’s not so sure,

you’re asking if you should forgive him, but it comes across that the decision to do so, is already made, you just want to punish him a bit,

you need to decide your boundaries, the relationship clearly doesn’t work, but you’re trying to force it to, it’s you who has no doubt you want a future with him, but he does have doubts.

instead of trying to force it, the grown up thing is to listen, talk, accept. Take some time apart, both of you need to make decisions, this includes him.

This. How will this ‘stand up guy’ manage when you’re dealing with no sleep with a baby, or when you’ve been together for 20 plus years and having some difficulties in menopause. He’s not the one for you.

toomanycoffeecups · 23/07/2026 07:44

You sound really really intense, like someone who has swallowed a relationship counselling textbook !

You are both mid 20s fgs ! It shouldn’t be this hard.

Coralsunset · 23/07/2026 07:51

Bin him and move on.

This!! He’ll do it again for sure and it’ll escalate, it won’t ‘just’ be a drunk kiss every time.

aquashiv · 23/07/2026 08:01

He's already gone, and with that, trust and respect have been lost. He is not being truthful to you.

Move on from this situation for your own peace of mind.

Badbadbunny · 23/07/2026 08:14

Don’t let the drunkenness excuse it. People show their true self when drunk. It won’t be the last time he cheats on you. No excuse for the flirty messages either as presumably he wasn’t drunk for all of them. Get rid. You deserve better.
