Would you continue dating someone after they admitted attempted shoplifting?

What would you do if you caught someone you were dating trying to shoplift?

I've been dating a guy for about 3 months and he's very honest and got a very virtuous community job. We were in a local supermarket and we got to the til and I couldn't find the shampoo I'd put in the basket so was asking him and the cashier. He was looking around for it and then said 'oh, it's in my pocket, I forgot I put it in there'. We paid for it and after he said it had been deliberate. How would you react?

Haggling in a charity shop is more of an ick for me. That's embarrassing. I would end it.

CalamityLane · 21/07/2026 17:29

No way. No matter how he tries to justify it.

If he is doing this in your presence after 3 months what is he doing behind your back.

Not acceptable behaviour. If he had been caught it could have backfired on you too. I think you should end the relationship. He’s not trustworthy.

I was just going to type this

He's shown you who he is, loud and clear.

Any problems further down the line are on you now, because you'll have chosen to stay with a liar, thief and deceiver. It's that black and white.

Find someone with a better character. There are plenty of decent men out there, and plenty who aren't but show it later on. This one's shown it early and done you a favour. What you thought was clear water's turned into dirty.

D'oh, hadn't RTFT.

I hope you got all your stuff back from him!

Run a mile.

PeachOctopus · 22/07/2026 15:34

This man might just be an immature twat or he might be a pathological thief - ultimately he will move in with you and have access to your bank accounts, I wouldn’t trust him.

No seems like pushing boundaries - huge red flag

practicalmagic2 · 25/07/2026 19:59

This says a lot about his character and I wouldn’t be comfortable being with someone who doesn’t care about breaking the law. Even if they were just a friend I would cut them off as I wouldn’t want to be associated.

Allcatsathome · 25/07/2026 20:02

Oh gosh you can't be that desperate can you.

Sodthesystem · 26/07/2026 18:25

The fact that he did it when you were with him would be a deal breaker for me.

I had a best friend in my college years who stole a bra when I was with her once and I didn’t notice but she told me afterwords and it really should have been a huge red flag that she was willing to do that with me there. She actually went on to steal from me infact.

Just run.

No way would I see thus clown again.
Who needs stress everytime you go into a shop!
I definitely wouldn't date a thief.
