Been with partner 3 years, live together. He’s a very good partner, the best I’ve had, kind, gorgeous, great with my older children, wholesome, healthy, we enjoy the simple things, he doesn’t drink so we walk, eat well, jump in the camer and explore. He’s never once shouted, sworn, been cruel. He’s lovely.

Something is missing, I’m not sure what, he’s literally the fittest thing I’ve ever laid eyes on, sex is great, conversation flows, but it all just seems abit boring someone, I think I’ve always gone for humour over looks. My ex’s (albeit both of them huge twats) made me laugh a lot and that’s how I fell in love with them. However both turned out to be abusive and one ended up in prison for harming me. Hence current very nice and caring partner feels safe.

All this however came to its knees about 4 weeks ago….

A little bit of history he doesn’t drink because he’s in recovery and has been for 9 years now. I’m ok with that I think it’s courageous. He also had a problem with cocaine in his 20s (13 years clean).

A few weeks ago he breaks down and says he has a confession, he visited a brothel. (Fucking shoot me now, I’ve been here before). I tell him to leave, he’s does quietly and very upset.

Weeks have now passed and he’s had to do a lot of soul searching to try and work out his behaviour. In this past month, he’s paid to see psychiatrist, psychologist and been the GP. He says I am the love of his life and he just can’t understand were this self sabotage as come from. He’s been diagnosed with ADHD and CPTSD from childhood trauma (mainly issues around his father’s rejection and mother’s abandonment). Basically he feels unlovable, very low self esteem, his visit was a form of him rejecting me, self harm and sabotage. Because of his now clear mind / moral compass from his time in AA and the 12 steps he had to fess up. He states it wasn’t sex, it was disgusting, he hated himself before, during and after. The whole thing was gross unloving and disgusting. I can believe this.

His mother believes this was a cry for help and that he truly does love me. He’s doing everything a remorseful man should.

I truly believe he’ll never do this again, he’s sticking with the therapy, starting meds and says he’ll forever work on being a better man and healing the inner child stuff.

This is my 3rd long term partner, each of them has cheated. I let the others go instantly however this just feels more complex.

Question is do I stay for a happy quiet life or do I start afresh.

There’s part of me that can imagine growing old with him, that he’ll care for me and my children. But a part of me that thinks is there more out there? Is there better? Or am I holding out for a fairy tale.

He’s just as abusive as your previous partners. He’s just doing it in a different way.

summitfever · 16/07/2026 20:31

Unless this man is under 25 his childhood trauma is no longer an excuse, and stopped being one at around that point. At what stage in life do people stop having a free pass to treat people they propose to love in a vile manner and put it down to others hurting them, what, 40 years ago? Come on op. Your downfall is “I have empathy for him”, where’s the empathy for yourself, his innocent victim. Empathy is the downfall of most domestic abuse victims. Put that in the bin and see this for what it is. An abhorrent pervert utilising your better nature to do whatever the fuck he wants and get away with it. See this in isolation for what it is. Disgusting. You deserve a lot better and so do your kids. If he’s still doing shit like this now he will never change, he had his chance when he went into recovery to heal from all this, it’s not happened. He’s not a good man op.

RumPidgeon · 16/07/2026 20:51

Do not throw your best years away at a man so broken he will drag you down with him.

Please go to therapy yourself. Find happiness in your own soul and don’t look back.

If you give him a second chance you’re lowering the bar to accept more drama from him. Why would you want this in your life? You only get one. Do you not value yourself?

Better said than what I posted.

I think you need to work on yourself—get to the bottom of why you’re choosing to pair off with such toxic men.

LouiseMadetheBestBroccoliPasta · 16/07/2026 22:53

He told you about him using the prostitute for a reason. He didn't have to, but he did.

WHY?

I think he was either trying to destabilise you - to get control over you - or he was trying to get you to absorb the personal cost of his dreadful behaviour, so that he could be cleansed.

Or both.

This guy is FUCKED UP.

OP, he's an addict, and full of destructive crap. Relationships shouldn't be this difficult. He will only drag your life down. Ditch this guy.

Youregivingmeearache · 16/07/2026 22:53

Maybe he can't have fun without having a vice which has now moved onto brothels.

You already thought something was missing. Let this one go. There will always be something and you'll never fully trust again. Once you take him back then you've given him the go ahead for another time.
Don't put yourself through this.

Mischance · 16/07/2026 23:05

Even if you decide to forgive his exploitation of another woman by paying for sex, you are dealing here with a damaged person - do you want to be his emotional carer and prop for the rest of your life? Do you want to take on that role - a life of responsibility with no humour in it or fun?

Just because you feel sorry for him does not mean you have to take on the task of being his crutch for life.

Do it if it is what you truly want - if it is how you see your life panning out.

I would have concerns about your children really - your use of the word "wholesome" shortly after saying how good he is with your children makes me wonder if you might have felt the need to use this word because somehow you are wondering if it is OK. It is a strange word to use about someone who has gone off and had sex with a prostitute, and feels a bit as though it is your attempt to convince yourself this is so. I would not want my children of any age around someone who used a prostitute.

I am sorry you are faced with these difficult decisions.

Don't.

So he's got a sob-story.

But he's an alcoholic, drug-user and now a punter. He claims all that's in the past and due to this and that. But it seems like he's trying all the vices and addictions to me, which one is he going to pick up next?

You have children. If he relapses, it's not just you that it affects.

If it was you on your own, then whatever, run what risks you like, believe in the addict, take a chance on his rehabilitation.

But you are not on your own, you have dependents. You have no business bringing that risk into your kids lives.

Absolutely this.

If you have to ask you're not sure, and honestly, why on earth would you be?!

Maybe do the freedom programme before you date again? Im not judging, I've just chosen to stay single. Had quite enough of heartbreak/trauma.

That was on me, she was messaging me/ visiting / calling me and I was struggling act normal with her so said he has to tell her something. It was maybe a week after and he sat down with her, they’ve had some very deep chats about his past which I think was needed for them both.

God. So many blurry boundaries.
Just walk away.
This man will drag you down. He already is.

aquashiv · 17/07/2026 15:39

Having ADHD does not justify poor behaviour; we all possess morals and self-control. I get frustrated seeing this so often. Using women for sex is disgusting—he's a creep.

Melograno · 19/07/2026 10:52

He talks daily about his therapy and how much he’s learning, how safe and loved I will be forever, etc and it’s very conflicting to listen to. I feel like I’m this constant pendulum, I’m either hot or cold.
I’ve told him we are over, he’s begged me not to put the nails in the coffin, I said ok you get yourself better and we’ll see. But I don’t think I can cope in this middle ground. With his constant pleading eyes, with all the tears

Classic Narc
Hes made himself the victim of his own behaviour and you the perpetrator " nails in the coffin"
He did that himself

Bin!

Absolutely. Don’t give him a diagnosis to hide behind.

ginasevern · 19/07/2026 18:34

Cry for help. Aren't men full of shit. I've had trauma and hardship, never once felt the need to fuck a sex worker. You say you've never been on your own OP? Take a rain check from men and sort your life out because you're clearly making bad choices.

Ws2210 · 19/07/2026 19:35

No no no no no!

As a former prostituted woman, I can tell you right now that paying for sex is rape. He's a rapist OP. He's a misogynist and he will not change. Do not buy any of the 'I did it to self harm' bullshit, he did it because he wanted to fuck a young woman, and felt entitled to pay to do so, and he enjoyed it.

You know who likely has childhood trauma? That poor woman who he paid to rape.
