So… went for a coffee with someone I’ve known for years… was never any attraction before, however years on we bumped into each other and I genuinely do quite fancy him now !

he asked me out for a coffee which I’ve yet been too ( might go )
the only thing is he’s got 3 children. I’ve got none. Although it’s not a problem to me Im worrying what my family will think ? We all live in the same village ! So everyone knows everyone.. thoughts please.

I think you will find there are a lot of people on MN who think single mums shouldn’t date

Well I hope they never find themselves in that position so! I dated a man with kids also for a few years when my youngest was 11 or 12, his kids were roughly similar ages to mine and my first husband had a child before I met him so I was a stepmum then also. I have been single a few years but dont plan on staying single forever but that said I think meeting a man of my age with no kids already probably wouldnt be my cuppa either - I need to be with someone who knows kids always come first so I guess we all have our lines.

Im laughing at all the 'do xyz before thinking of moving in with him'. The man asked her for coffee, he hasnt gotten down on one knee and tried to put her glass slipper back on lol

Poor guys getting a bit of a pasting here, just for asking someone out to coffee.

Overtheatlantic · 12/01/2026 13:46

Never. If things progress you will never be his priority.

I think if you want your own children this man isn't a great prospect (especially if you dream of more than one kid), and if you are child free by choice, then this man isn't a great prospect, other peoples kids are way more wearing than your own ever is (and they can be a pain in the arse!!).

Before I got married, I didn't date men with kids because from my viewpoint, it seemed like most of the time, the women they were dating ended up doing childcare on their BF's custody time and I wasn't down for that. It would start out as doing him a favour here and there and then creep more and more.

This guy has 3 kids and even though 2 of them are older, that's a lot of responsibility and financial commitment and there's a younger kid in the picture. I wouldn't date him if I was single and had no kids of my own.

As others said, if you want kids, he might not. He's got 3. If you don't want kids, he's got 3.

Glad it’s not just me who thinks this.

As a recently single father of a toddler who I have over 50% of the time, reading some of these replies makes me think some think us single parents should give up on relationships and our desires until our children reach 18.

Maybe I’m naïve, but surely it’s possible to get a good balance? Time to focus on children, and time outside of that where the relationship is the primary focus?

It must be really difficult to meet someone who does not have kids, unless you are in your twenties/very early 30’s? The majority of people do usually have kids by then

Ages? 3 adult children are very different from primary aged or teens.

If he's still in the thick of child rearing I would not date him.

Given how grandparents including step grandparents are now expected to provide childcare i wouldnt date a man with adult children either,

I think you'd be surprised..something like one in two men remain childless at fifty.

Europe/UK: Around 25% of men, compared to 20% of women, are childless

Don’t do it to yourself.

Wowthatwasabigstep · 13/01/2026 08:24

So much more information is needed before anybody could possibly comment.

Do you or have you ever wanted children in your life.

How does he speak of the children’s mother, positive or awful?

Why do you care what your family think of any decisions you make as presumably you are a grown up and responsible for yourself.
