Husband throat clearing driving me mad

Husband had smoked since he was in teens. Now in 50s. Mostly 40 per day. Recently he’s managed to cut back to he says less than 20 per day. But he's taken up vaping. And it makes his throat clearing MUCH worse. I’ve just sat here and timed it it’s on average every couple of minutes. It’s driving me mad. I know it’s great he’s smoking less as we can’t afford to go on spending that amount of money on cigarettes. But the throat clearing 🥺. He also now vapes in the house so if I come into the room he’s in then it stinks. Have asked him to only do it outside but he doesn’t care he just dismisses that.

When did he last have a thorough medical checkup?

MiloMinderbinder925 · 07/05/2025 21:09

What do you want to happen?

Pompompurin1 · 07/05/2025 21:11

Sounds unbearable. I’d keep away from his antisocial stink and noises.

Levithecat · 07/05/2025 21:11

Vaping makes your mouth and throat quite dry so he may need to drink more. Does he want to quit cigarettes?

SharpLilacAnt · 07/05/2025 21:20

Not had any check ups for about 3 years

I’m not sure what I want to happen, it’s difficult I wish the throat clearing would stop.

Yes he wants to give up smoking but has been talking about it for 25 years it just never happens.

It would be ideal if the throat clearing stopped. I’m not sure if he will ever manage to quit both.

It’s difficult to live with for sure.

I couldnt be with someone who inflicts such self-harm on themselves and inflicts their disgusting habit on their family. You deserve a medal for having to witness him killing himself. Sorry,

Ilovemyshed · 07/05/2025 21:47

Tell him to go and visit the vascular ward in your nearest hospital and decide if he still wants to smoke. Shocking.

Eyesopenwideawake · 07/05/2025 21:51

If he secretly scared of trying and failing tell him it's not too late; I smoked for 50 years and gave up 10 months ago. It is possible, and a lot easier that the tobacco and pharmaceutical industries will let on.

That’s okay, thanks for your opinion. I’ve not really known if I’m being unreasonable for getting annoyed.

I feel this, so many others including people around us have managed to stop. I know it’s hard but it’s not impossible. Well done you, hope you’re noticing the health benefits.

I’m surprised youve put up with him so long . Smoking is vile never mind the money wasted over decades .

He's 50 and has been smoking and clearing his throat, I presume throughout your relationship. You asked him to vape outside and he didn't take any notice. In fact you said he doesn't care and dismissed you.

Do you think there's any likelihood of him stopping? I would get noise cancelling ear buds.

With a long history of heavy smoking and currently doing a lot of throat clearing, he should have a medical checkup.

LemograssLollipop · 08/05/2025 01:13

Full sympathies, similar here. I also have excessive hacking up to contend with 🤢

My DH went outside when he smoked but with vaping he does it indoors. All the bloody time. The constant whistling type sound of the inhaling is nearly sending me over the edge 🤬

that he stops bloody vaping and has a check up probably.
Exh developed a habit of going “fsss” really often; like a cross between a sip and a sniff! if I hadn’t already petitioned for other reasons that alone would’ve done it 🤷🏽‍♀️

You have my sympathies too! Sounds like we are in a very similar position. Wouldn’t it be good if we could find a solution

Yes I agree, but I doubt he would. He was told by doctors to stop smoking 3 years ago after a health scare.

I used to throat clear when I smoked, but that stopped after about two weeks of giving up. I have found that some cheaper vape juice causes me to want to throat clear. Get him to try a different vape juice. I find Edge much better.

PyongyangKipperbang · 08/05/2025 23:10

I quit smoking via vaping and the cough doesnt go, it just changes. So instead of a few times a day coughing crap up off your lungs, you get the clammy throat.

Its not ideal but it does settle down. Right now he has the worst of both worlds. He needs to use the strongest strength for his vape (I would say 18mg strength based on what he was smoking) and quit the fags completely. Then he will get the throat cough but lose the lung cough. As he he then gradually lowers the strength (so 12mg, then 6, then 3....although you often have to buy those online) the cough will ease. Its a "short term pain for long term gain" thing.

I am currently on 3mg and the throat cough has almost gone. Planning to quit vaping before my holiday in July.

Is he actually vaping to quit nicotine? Because if he isnt and is just doing it as it is cheaper than smoking, he will always stay on the strongest liquid and will simply exchange fags for vapes. And the throat cough will stay.
