Husband throat clearing driving me mad

Husband had smoked since he was in teens. Now in 50s. Mostly 40 per day. Recently he’s managed to cut back to he says less than 20 per day. But he's taken up vaping. And it makes his throat clearing MUCH worse. I’ve just sat here and timed it it’s on average every couple of minutes. It’s driving me mad. I know it’s great he’s smoking less as we can’t afford to go on spending that amount of money on cigarettes. But the throat clearing 🥺. He also now vapes in the house so if I come into the room he’s in then it stinks. Have asked him to only do it outside but he doesn’t care he just dismisses that.

I quit smoking via vaping and the cough doesnt go, it just changes. So instead of a few times a day coughing crap up off your lungs, you get the clammy throat.

Its not ideal but it does settle down. Right now he has the worst of both worlds. He needs to use the strongest strength for his vape (I would say 18mg strength based on what he was smoking) and quit the fags completely. Then he will get the throat cough but lose the lung cough. As he he then gradually lowers the strength (so 12mg, then 6, then 3....although you often have to buy those online) the cough will ease. Its a "short term pain for long term gain" thing.

I am currently on 3mg and the throat cough has almost gone. Planning to quit vaping before my holiday in July.

Is he actually vaping to quit nicotine? Because if he isnt and is just doing it as it is cheaper than smoking, he will always stay on the strongest liquid and will simply exchange fags for vapes. And the throat cough will stay.

Im not he’s on a nicotine vape at all for a while the smell was fruity which was disgusting but now I think he said it’s a mint one. So maybe replacing the habit more than anything. I honestly can’t see him getting to the stage where he’s doing neither but hopefully I’m wrong!

I used to throat clear when I smoked, but that stopped after about two weeks of giving up. I have found that some cheaper vape juice causes me to want to throat clear. Get him to try a different vape juice. I find Edge much better.

Tbh it’s helpful thank you I will see what he’s on.

They can be any flavour at all and still have nicotine in them. Not many are actually nicotine free.

I very much doubt he is on no nicotine vapes if he usually smoke 40 a day. You need to find out what strength he is on, it will be on the packaging.

He should get checked out. If he’s over 55 he can have a lung cancer check up in some areas. Only know this as one of my close friends was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in January, already spread to the brain (no symptoms). She died 9wks later. Her daughter later found a text from the NHS last year inviting her for a lung cancer check up. It only she had gone. I never knew but lung cancer often has no symptoms.

Well he sounds selfish as hell.

Thanks, I will look into to that. I’m sorry for your friend that’s so very sad

I didn’t know that, I will have a look when he next gets some thanks.

40 a day is horrendous. And 20 is still shocking. If he is trying to quit, has he tried NHS stop smoking services at all?

20 a day and vaping too doesn’t sound like he’s cutting down on nicotine at all.

It’s incredible that the body can cope with being poisoned for so long. But sounds like he should see a doctor about the throat clearing now as this doesn’t sound good.

He’s tried a few things, I think he tried NHS years ago. I suspect he’s still on more than 20 tbh as he probably underestimates when he tells me!
I agree it’s incredible how people get away with that for so long.
