Have a home HIV test in my hand - too scared to do it

Name changed. Don't want to go into background just now but appears I have caught an STI from my ex (awaiting GP results confirmation), since then all I can think about it that he has also given me HIV. I brought a home testing kit from Terence Higgins Trust and I have it here and am terrified to do it. Results in 15 mins. I have no one in real life that I feel I can talk to about this. I've had it for a few days and was going to wait until DS(11) goes to school tomorrow. I understand the Terence Higgins Trust also has a helpline open then so you can do it with someone on the phone if they have someone available. But I have a burning desire to also do it now. I really need to know. I have planned for both eventualities, what I would do if pos or not positive, and who I would need to speak to etc etc. Its just the testing bit

Anyone done it home alone? Any advice?

Well done for taking it, just to say if you need to take another prick test, blood sugar maybe, drink loads beforehand! Easier to get the sample.

Fingers crossed for you. Treatments are really advanced these days and it's better to know.

It will be ok either way. Lots of amazing medication now.

KitkatTrack · 05/05/2025 17:25

Amazingly this prick test was fine, worked easily and didn't feel feint after

You’ve got this. I’d assume you have a low chance of having it, but even if you do:

Like others on this thread I have several friends living with HIV and they really do just live normal lives with a daily pill. Much less of an issue than eg diabetes nowadays, and thank god for modern medicine.

Good luck op.

Did your ex have any other risk factors? Was he born here? It's quite unusual to contract hiv from heterosexual sex in the UK.

It is highly unlikely you have got HIV.

A good friend of mine had a bisexual boyfriend who DID have HIV unknowingly and slept with her for a period before he knew and she still didn't catch it.

He had been engaging in high risk activity. He's in a high risk category in a high risk area. We did some reading and only a small % of people are being infected in the UK these days and they tend to be in a specific high risk category. Even if he did have it, transmission is also not that high from vaginal sex (the doctor showed my friend stats as understandably she was extremely concerned).

Just saw the update but worth bearing what I said for future. It's good to be safe but don't worry unnecessarily 🙂.
