Would this be a deal breaker for you?

I'm in my 50s and recently started seeing a man my age, he's divorced with adult children. He lives rurally and has a one year old labrador. We see each other regularly and get on very well, but it's not serious yet.
He's asked me to go away for a weekend with him and I agreed. I asked him last night about what arrangements he's made for his dog while we are away. The dog can't go to kennels because it's not had it's vaccinations. He's leaving the dog on a long chain with access to a shed and outside and his adult sons will pop in when they can and walk the dog.
I've never had a dog myself but this doesn't sound right at all. I feel like I'll be worrying about the dog all weekend.

Good for you - I live rurally but would never leave my dog chained up outside. I would also worry that the dog would pine and bark all day - it would probably be very upset and could easily hurt itself trying to get off the chain - no way to treat a puppy!

Definitely not.
I grew up in the countryside and still have links there, and have never ever known anyone to do this.

As a previous poster said “could not fancy a
man who does this” and I second this. It would be a huge no for me.

Blondiebeachbabe · 30/09/2024 16:43

I look after dogs for a living. This would be a huge deal breaker for me. It's so inhumane. It'll be cold at night. The dog will be lonely. The water could run out. It could strangle itself on the chain. And why on earth hasn't it been vaccinated? This guy sounds like a nightmare.

Moronic attitude. Absolute deal breaker for me, and I suspect for you too. Don’t go then if you can see into the property check if the dog’s left tied up and report him.

Seaoftroubles · 30/09/2024 17:18

Glad you are throwing him back OP. This would have killed any attraction l felt for him. Also if the dog is not vaccinated it is probably not microchipped either which is a legal requirement. As well as dumping him report him too, he deserves it.

MissSkegness1951 · 30/09/2024 17:33

Completely unacceptable. No dog needs to be on a chain.

Posted too soon.
He laughed at my concern and said that people who live in the countryside do this all the time. I feel differently about both him and weekend away now but I don't know if I'm overreacting.

No they don't

Unless they don't care about animals

Animal walking and boarding is a huge growth industry where I live

He's clearly tight as well as cruel

TickyBooo · 30/09/2024 22:30

Yes. How terrible for the poor dog.

MrsKeats · 01/10/2024 01:05

Total dealbreaker.
