Prepaid debit card? Exist?

FlyTime · 14/05/2024 19:19

Leaving a bad situation.

I have cash saved and need to be able to pay for things online before I go.

I can't use any existing accounts and can't apply for new ones.

Is there a prepaid debit card I can load cash onto? I can't load it online.

I've seen the post office do one but it's a travel card and think you can only use it abroad?

Can't you just open an account with Monzo, Chase or similar and just transfer the money you've saved into there? They come with debit cards.

JoJothegerbil · 14/05/2024 19:31

Sorry, just seen you said you can't open any new accounts. Ignore me. How about one of those Go Henry cards? I know they are aimed at kids, but they might let you have one.

Can I put cash on it somewhere?

Is there someone you trust who you can give the cash to and they can transfer funds on to a card?

Doyoumind · 14/05/2024 19:39

What kind of things do you need to buy?

MillshakePickle · 14/05/2024 19:39

It's not a pre paid card. It's an account that you open online. But once open you can deposit cash in to it. Use private browsing on your phone or go to library and use their computers and maybe have the card forwarded to a friends address or your work or even get a post office box?

If you're the only one who gets the post have it sent to your house but it sounds like it may be risky for you to do that.

Or could you take your cash to a new bank and set up a new account and deposit there? Explain that the card needs to be sent elsewhere? Bring in all your ID etc

Lisbeth50 · 14/05/2024 19:51

I have a Tesco one.

wutheringkites · 14/05/2024 19:52

I think they've mostly been stopped due to money laundering.

NamingConundrum · 14/05/2024 19:59

Open revolut account. No physical card, can add a virtual one on phone if needed. Can top up with cash in a shop.

You can buy Mastercard gift cards in the supermarket which you preload to the value you need.

Post office travel card can be loaded with sterling but there's a small charge to do it

Mastercard do one

INeedAnotherName · 15/05/2024 08:33

According to that website all the general ones listed I've never heard of. What's the difference between a travel card and a general one?

This is something I might need in the future too.

Coldfinch · 15/05/2024 08:34

Travelex prepaid card works in the UK, too @FlyTime Good luck!!

@pinkoryelloworgreen don't want to derail the thread but just to let you know this has changed recently - you can now deposit up to £300 in cash per transaction at the PO into your Monzo account. They'll charge you £1 to do it but still cheaper for me than driving to the nearest bank to pay into my other account and then transferring over.
