Just taken first tablet today and quite scared of all the horror stories of side effects.
Can anyone give any feedback of experiences?

I had no horrible side effects at all, I ended up moving to sertaline in the end for various reasons but I know many people who took it, felt a little more anxious for a few days but then noticed an improvement.

thebeesknees123 · 15/03/2019 10:43

Nothing horrific. They have to list them by law. I just had a bit of a funny tummy, slight increase and axiety, tiredness, difficulty sleeping and vivid dreams. All in all, it's only 2 weeks

Moralitym1n1 · 15/03/2019 10:57

I had anxiety, sleeplessness, felt smacked out, no appetite .. just terrible and stopped after one (really, just one) tablet.

Moralitym1n1 · 15/03/2019 11:00

However Id had sleeplessness and very poor appetite for a while before so ...

It made me feel worse, is all I can say.

im36degrees · 15/03/2019 15:10

I had no side effects at all. I'd tried a few beforehand and had horrible side effects, but no problems with Fluoxetine whatsoever.
It's a case of trial and error with things like this unfortunately, you may get side effects, you may not. If you have any concerns you can discuss them with your GP, but bear in mind they take a number of weeks to kick in, so unless the side effects are horrendous, it's worth persevering

oldfool1 · 15/03/2019 16:39

Absolutely killed my sex drive but did help with anxiety.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 15/03/2019 16:41

No side effects apart from huge respite from the crippling anxiety I’d had. Easy to come off too, in my experience.

Raera · 15/03/2019 16:44

Don't be scared and don't give up after one tablet as a pp did. With any of these medications you may feel a little more anxious initially but probably only for about 10 days. See that as a positive in that it is starting to kick in and you should start feeling better in a short while.

Hi, I'm glad I've seen this post today. My mum aged 87 was prescribed this 2 weeks ago, and last night she had chest pains and lots of heart flutters, we've been to the drs today, he just said to call an ambulance next time if the pain lasts longer than 25 mins.It wasn't until we came home that I wondered if it could be the prozac that's causing it Anybody had the same ?

NotTheFordType · 15/03/2019 17:18

@Katyy - heart palpitations are listed as a possible side effect but then palpitations are generally not dangerous (though can be quite frightening to experience.) They can also be caused by stress - I had them really badly when I split up with an ex and again after my husband died.

Depending on the reasons for it being prescribed, it might be worth talking to the GP about switching her over to Sertaline, Citalopram or Amitriptyline - they also all have possible side effects but palpitations are not listed.

OP - I've not personally taken fluoxetine but I know several people who have tried it. Some got on really well and had no side effects. Some did not get on, had some side effects and switched to another AD. Until you try, you won't know how it affects you.

user1491228333 · 15/03/2019 17:25

Thanks all. Will see how it goes. Trying to be careful not to Will any side effects on! Smile
I do worry about the sex drive but I'm sure OH would prefer that to how I'm feeling just now!

I felt a bit nauseous about an hour after I took them, that lasted a couple of hours. Those effects wore off by the end of the month. I yawned like crazy. It did affect my sex drive. But I was in a bad place anyway. They do not make you high, you just feel like you are normal and have rejoined the human race once they start to work.

Katyy · 15/03/2019 17:55

Nothefordtype, thank you for replying, they were prescribed for anxiety, I didn't know about the side effects of palpitations, she has had lots of these through her life as she has always suffered from anxiety.I'll see how she goes, and maybe suggest a change.Thank you.

Katyy · 15/03/2019 17:57

User, hope your okay.I'm in the same position, started stertraline two days ago take it in the morning, supposed to take 50mg, but cutting them in half at the moment until I get used to them.

whitehalleve · 15/03/2019 18:00

As an ex medic I pretty much only have good things to say about it.

Hedgehogblues · 15/03/2019 18:12

The first fortnight I get anxious and exhausted. But that goes away. It works like a dream for me.

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 15/03/2019 18:16

I would say the disappearance of my sex drive is my only side effect.

justkeepgoing76 · 16/03/2019 09:03

Made the mistake of having wine last night. OMG I feel like death

CupcakeB · 16/03/2019 09:25

I just had awful vivid dreams I wasn't sure what I had dreamt and what was real. Made me exhausted.

Lunagirl44 · 16/03/2019 22:20

I'm on quite a high dose of these tablets and found they work quite well.... bear with them you might feel a bit lousy for a few weeks till they get in to your system but hopefully you'll start to feel them working soon. I found they made me quite dizzy especially if I stood up to quick everyone is different hopefully you'll not experience any side effects though.

Catgotyourbrain · 16/03/2019 22:25

This was the third SSRI I’ve tried and the best for me. I think it’s down to each person which suits. Takes a couple of weeks to settle. Any medication has side effects - but for many, many people they are really minor

RuthW · 16/03/2019 22:31

Absolutely no problems at all

thebeesknees123 · 16/03/2019 23:43

What's a high dose? I am on 40mg

Lunagirl44 · 16/03/2019 23:54

That's what I'm on too. I'm having problems sourcing the tablets as my pharmacy says that they don't normally order in that strength as it's quite high and not a lot of people are on it. X

Mrsmummy90 · 17/03/2019 00:10

First few weeks I felt irrational and angry and long term, I completely lost my sex drive but other than that, they worked for me for a good few years.
