What does it mean if there's a chat in your chat list for a particular contact but no message content when you click on it? I can see the preview of the last message received in the chat list but it appears completely empty when I click on it Confused

They may be new to what's app if you have not had a conversation with them yet it would be empty

HelloPeopl3 · 05/11/2018 05:33

What do you mean you can see a preview ?

I would think the messages had been deleted from/to this particular person

Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 05:34

It's the chat list rather than contacts list and there has definitely been a conversation as I can still see the preview of the last message received in that chat, it's just empty when I click on it.

CupoBlood · 05/11/2018 05:36

You mean if you are looking at the scrolling list of all convos you can see the first bit but then nothing when you go into it.

Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 05:38

Hello if you look at the list of chats you can see the beginning of the last message in that chat, that's what I mean by preview.

OP posts:
Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 05:39

Yes Cup, exactly that. I thought if you cleared the chat it would appear blank so am confused why preview is there.

OP posts:
HelloPeopl3 · 05/11/2018 05:41

Id be wondering why these messages were deleted ?

Is this in your partners phone OP ?

Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 05:41

Yes Hello Sad

OP posts:
BleakBetty · 05/11/2018 06:55

The individual messages have been deleted but not the actual thread. The only way to remove the preview would be to delete the message thread.

Hope it’s nothing too worrying OP Flowers

Hadenoughofallthis · 05/11/2018 07:20

I would wonder if the messages had been deleted and if so, why.

Hadenoughofallthis · 05/11/2018 07:23

I've just tied this out, with an old message thread I no longer wanted. There was an option to delete all messages, which I pressed. They all disappeared, but so too did the preview.

MaryJenson · 05/11/2018 07:26

I can’t understand why the preview is still there. Is it because it was unread when the thread was deleted!

Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 15:38

Could be Mary, it was a ‘signing off’ type message so quite possible he read it in preview or as a notification and never actually opened it. Looks like he’s cleared the chat then, visible message not massively incriminating but he doesn’t normally delete anything so can only think there was something he didn’t want me to see Sad Still a bit of doubt there for me though as I would have thought he would have deleted the chat completely (rather than cleared) to get rid of both the preview and any evidence there had ever been a conversation Confused I honestly don’t know what to think, will just have to keep an eye on things for now and see if there’s any further contact.

OP posts:
anothernc123 · 05/11/2018 16:03

I've deleted messages in a chat and they've never ever been in the preview, the message moves down to the time of the message before i've kept, so say this happened:
Me: hey how are you - monday 9am
them: great howare you -monday 10am
Me: feel really sad, deletes Tuesday 1pm

The chat preview would say 'great how are you' and the message would move down to fit in line with messages at 10 am on monday.

I just tested it so I'm not sure what's been said above is true?

Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 16:35

I think I see what you mean, any alternative theories? I’m reasonably tech savvy but don’t actually use WhatsApp much so it’s confusing me what’s happened here. Trouble is it makes a real difference to whether I have anything to worry about, it would be the fact that they’ve been deliberately deleted/cleared that would ring alarm bells so I really need to know, so frustrating.

OP posts:
Blackladybug · 05/11/2018 16:55

Could they have got a new phone, updated or uninstalled then reinstalled Whatsapp?

DBN1 · 05/11/2018 17:01

I delete threads/conversations regularly as I like a clean'ish inbox and I have nothing to hide so it doesn't necessarily mean anything untoward is going on OP.

Do you know the other party on the thread? Do you have reason to suspect anything is going on? Flowers

bunintheoven88 · 05/11/2018 17:08

I clear my WhatsApp chats sometimes to manage storage as some chats are up quite a bit. Is there a thumbnail picture of the person you can look at? Might establish who it is.

bunintheoven88 · 05/11/2018 17:09

That should read *take up quite a bit of storage. Not sure what happened then.

Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 17:27

I know who it is and I’m really not sure whether I should be suspicious tbh, I guess something must have tweaked my spidey senses or I wouldn’t have checked but there’s nothing obvious. Except that he may have cleared that particular chat when he doesn’t clear any others. That’s why working out what’s happened with the chat is so important to me, if it’s some kind of weird glitch I might be worrying for nothing although I realise I’m probably grasping at straws.

OP posts:
Pigeonpies · 05/11/2018 17:40

When you click to open the message, is it completely blank or is it just that one message you can see?

Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 17:47

Completely blank, can only see the message as preview before it opened, it disappears when I click on it.

OP posts:
Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 17:49

before it’s opened, sorry.

OP posts:
Whowhatwhere99 · 05/11/2018 17:56

Had missed your post Blackladybug, do you mean the other person may have uninstalled and reinstalled? Would that remove the chat and leave the preview do you know? Don’t think DH has un/reinstalled as other chats from before the suspect one are still there.

OP posts:
bunintheoven88 · 05/11/2018 18:09

Is there any way you can bring this particular person up in conversation and gauge your partners reaction OP?
