Puff the Magic Dragon - is there something wrong with me that it made me cry as a child?

I just heard the song 'Puff the Magic Dragon' and it made me sob. I couldn't bear to hear it as a child either at school - same tearful effect.
What's wrong with me?

I'm the same OP. Cried when singing it at school. Thirty years ago. Makes me well up now. Hilarious when you think about the drug association Grin.

It was Brahms Lullaby that made me cry as a child. DB had a pale blue and white musical teddy bear that played it and i was only a toddler but that tune made me feel an inexplicable sadness.

Every time DM wound the teddy up i would well up. I still remember how i felt now.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/08/2018 02:51

I bawled at it.

Copperbonnet · 07/08/2018 02:53

I’m terribly confused by your post.

It made everyone cry. It’s famous for making everyone cry.

But even if that wasn’t the case why would it mean something was “wrong” with you just because it touched your heart? Confused

Ginandplatonic · 07/08/2018 03:29

It’s a really sad song - surely everyone thinks so?

GorgonLondon · 07/08/2018 03:59

It's a sad song that's intended to be tear-jerking.

Why would it mean something about you in particular?

Grasslands · 07/08/2018 04:12

i still cry when i hear about it, tearjerker for sure!

inshockrightnow · 07/08/2018 05:36

What a blast from the past. Always made me cry as well :(

Rosemary46 · 07/08/2018 05:45

There’s something wrong with you if you DONT cry at that song.

MesM · 07/08/2018 06:27

I was sad for Puff and furious with that Jackie Paper!

Livingoncake · 07/08/2018 06:33

It makes me cry even harder now that I’m a mum - it reminds me that my beautiful babies will grow up and not need me so much any more. ABBA’s “Slipping Through My Fingers” has a similar effect.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/08/2018 06:34

I found it on iTunes and I can't listen to it anymore either. To sad

LadyOfTheCanyon · 07/08/2018 06:40

I was left unmoved by Puff as a child but White Horses used to make me howl.

MaggieMuggins · 07/08/2018 06:49

You are not alone, that's perfectly normal. On the other hand, bawling in a similar fashion to a cover version of Daydreamer by David Cassidy sung by Pinky and bloody Perky is embarrassing Grin

MeanTangerine · 07/08/2018 06:50

Oh God I've just read the lyrics and welled up. It's about the transience of childhood/innocence, innit?

MyGastIsFlabbered · 07/08/2018 07:00

Still makes me cry even in my 40s

user1487194234 · 07/08/2018 19:33

Dragons live for ever
Always makes my cry

Frogletmamma · 07/08/2018 19:34

I cried at Puff but my more robust DD remained unmoved.

GoldenMalicious · 07/08/2018 19:38

When I was little, I remember being very upset by that song. My mum used to tell me that Jackie Paper grew up and had a son of his own, and that little boy then became Puff's friend. It made perfect sense to me! In fact, I believed it so strongly that I was pretty sure that was part of the song - but no, it was just mum's way of cheering me up, bless her.

RomanyRoots · 07/08/2018 19:39

it's about purple heart drugs so I heard many years ago.

AornisHades · 07/08/2018 19:41

I'm teary even thinking about "Dragons live for ever but not so little boys"

moreismore · 07/08/2018 19:43

Ok you’ve all ruined it for me! My mum used to sing it to me when I was little but I don’t remember the last two verses-just looked them up and it’s so sad!!!

Am going to continue singing my more upbeat version that ends halfway through!

AynRandTheObjectivist · 07/08/2018 19:43

I'm guessing you didn't hear the student version.

Puff the magic dragon lived on a shelf,
He had no friends to play with so he played with - well, you get the idea.

RomanyRoots · 07/08/2018 19:44

Aw no, it was weed, sorry.
this is interesting though, I knew i could remember a druggy story around it.
Peter Paul and Mary were smokers though, right stoners apparently here's a wiki link, not sure what is true, but interesting.

Aw no, it was weed, sorry.

I don't know why I found this so funny, but I did. Thank you.
