partner has just received a blackmail email of someone who located his password to a porn site, recorded everything and then asked for a payment within a day. he has gone to the local police about it.
i'm not squeamish about porn sites or use of porn. however we have had a long break from a normal sex life with little kids and a big move for his work, and he refuses to talk to a counselor with me about it.
this leaves me feeling like we don't have much left.

So this person has got hold of porn your partner has watched? What site is it? It isn't Adultwork is it?

crispinquent · 12/07/2018 20:22

I have no idea what site it is

Red2017 · 12/07/2018 20:27

Was it in his spam folder?
I think there is a spam email going around like this
There was a thread on it and quite a few people had received it
Double check
Hope all is well

crispinquent · 12/07/2018 20:29

Newerversion why do you mention Adultwork

OP posts:
Newerversion · 12/07/2018 20:29

Does you partner know which site the email refers too? if not then I guess it could be a spam email thing.
Were the police helpful?

rollingonariver · 12/07/2018 20:30

Huh? Have they got videos of him or was it illegal porn or something? I don't understand at all how they're blackmailing him?

Newerversion · 12/07/2018 20:31

I mentioned Adultwork as I know it is one of the sites that people actually join rather than just watch ad hoc. It isn't a porn site as such though.

Hamandcheesebaguette · 12/07/2018 20:31

Did they want bitcoins? Told him he had good taste and was doing nasty things?

Scam. I've had about 30 of those this week.

KlutzyDraconequus · 12/07/2018 20:32

Adultwork is not really a 'Porn' site. There are video you can watch but its basically on online site for sex workers to advertise their 'Wares' so to speak.

overnightangel · 12/07/2018 20:32

Adult work is prostitutes OP

Newerversion · 12/07/2018 20:34

Yes, the blackmail thing was made me think adultwork, surely if blackmail is being threatened then there are things he wouldn't want people to see/know.
It may not be that at all though.

KlutzyDraconequus · 12/07/2018 20:37

If imagine most blokes and a lot of women wouldn't want their parents to get a video of them masturbating.. even if it was whilst watching the most vanilla of softcore porn.
Make sure you cover those webcams people.... And don't use porn sites you have to log in to..

crispinquent · 12/07/2018 20:51

The claim is video of him and yes the bitcoin thing was in there. Hamandcheesebaguette it sounds similar to what you said. I don't know how to ask him if it was Adultwork, bc i wouldnt have known what that was without asking you all.
The police are putting it onto cybercrimes but not within the "24 hr"deadline threatened.
The blackmail email went to his work email address.

Newerversion · 12/07/2018 20:54

Sounds like it may well be the same email mentioned by previous posters.

I am glad he didn’t get duped into paying them.

crispinquent · 12/07/2018 20:54

according to partner it was nothing with a 'paid' subscription.

Hamandcheesebaguette · 12/07/2018 20:56

^you don't know me and you're thinking why you received this e mail, right?

Well, I actually placed a malware on the porn website and guess what, you visited this web site to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were watching the video, your web browser acted as a RDP (Remote Desktop) and a keylogger which provided me access to your display screen and webcam. Right after that, my software gathered all your contacts from your Messenger, Facebook account, and email account.

What exactly did I do?

I made a split-screen video. First part recorded the video you were viewing (you've got a fine taste haha), and next part recorded your webcam (Yep! It's you doing nasty things!).

What should you do?

Well, I believe, $1200 is a fair price for our little secret. You'll make the payment via Bitcoin to the below address (if you don't know this, search "how to buy bitcoin" in Google).

BTC Address: 1HCDAr5zTuBqkNBS4KsqNaDZu73DhWcnH3
(It is cAsE sensitive, so copy and paste it)

Important:

You have 24 hours in order to make the payment. (I have an unique pixel within this email message, and right now I know that you have read this email). If I don't get the payment, I will send your video to all of your contacts including relatives, coworkers, and so forth. Nonetheless, if I do get paid, I will erase the video immidiately. If you want evidence, reply with "Yes!" and I will send your video recording to your 5 friends. This is a non-negotiable offer, so don't waste my time and yours by replying to this email.^

Was it this? Like I say, I've had loads of these this week. Not a porn watcher and haven't turned my laptop on for about 3 weeks anyway.

Total scam, nothing to worry about. Delete it and think of it no more!

yetmorecrap · 12/07/2018 21:00

I got this too!!

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 12/07/2018 21:01

This sounds scammy to me. Also heard about an email similar to PPs one above going around.

GreenMeerkat · 12/07/2018 21:03

There was a black mirror episode with this as the theme. Basically someone was threatened because their webcam was hacked and caught them watching child abuse stuff online. Obviously this is fictional and your DH was not doing this, but It sounds as if the scammers are using this as inspiration. Think it's been going on years.

crispinquent · 12/07/2018 21:39

omg Hamandcheesebaguette that is the exact working of the message. relief to hear it is a scam.

Emma198 · 12/07/2018 21:49

Glad it's just a scam OP. Hope you can work through everything.

Masterbuilders · 12/07/2018 22:19

This is spam and the very fact he has gone to the police to report it should be reassuring tbh.

Barbaro · 12/07/2018 22:44

It's a scam. Delete and ignore. Its not real.

mogratpineapple · 12/07/2018 22:59

I had one of these! Made me laugh because I haven't visited a porn site.
