Is Dh trying to tell me mil doesn't like me ?

Mil's rabbit sadly died. When I reported the news to Dh, he was very sad and he told me the rabbit was like the daughter she never had...I feel weird about him saying that.

What..?

PotteringAlong · 13/09/2016 12:16

But you're not her daughter...

Colourfulpast1975 · 13/09/2016 12:18

The rabbit was not her daughter either !!! Last time I checked, the rabbit didn't send her flowers for Mother's Day ! 😂

Pardon?

allthecarbs · 13/09/2016 12:18

I think he was just saying she lobed the rabbit a lot

pictish · 13/09/2016 12:19

Alright...not a lot to go on here, but based on what you have presented so far, yabu.
Is she the mother you never had?

TendonQueen · 13/09/2016 12:20

No, that was just a slightly off comparison and you're reading too much into it. He can't say 'like the son she never had' for obvious reasons. It's not a criticism of you. Though I would make your DH order his own flowers for her next Mother's Day.

Ellarose85 · 13/09/2016 12:20

Is this for real?! 😂

maybethedayafter · 13/09/2016 12:21

Presumably she's never had to care for you on a day to day basis like she did with the rabbit? I'm guessing he means that she made a fuss of the rabbit in the same way she would have done a little girl. Besides, it was your DH who made the comment, not your MIL so it's how he sees it, not how she does.

takesnoprisoners · 13/09/2016 12:21

WTF?? Based on your logic, are you trying to say that you are a rabbit?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 13/09/2016 12:28

Er...I don't think this has anything to do with you whatsoever.

She loved the rabbit like a child, and it has died. Your husband is putting into context what that loss is, to her. Presumably she paid a lot of attention to the rabbit and doted on it in a way that she would have, if she'd had a little girl.

Colourfulpast1975 · 13/09/2016 12:31

Yes I think you are all right ! I just thought it was a weird thing to say ! I love my pets but I wouldn't say like they are my children ! Guess we are all different in our grief !

loobyloo1234 · 13/09/2016 12:32

Aye? Is this a real post? Confused

maybethedayafter · 13/09/2016 12:34

But again, it was your DH who said it, not your MIL. Maybe she didn't see it as a child. Maybe your husband is actually resentful about the attention she gave to a pet compared to what he got as a child. Or maybe not. Either way it's not about you.

MatildaTheCat · 13/09/2016 12:36

Remember that older people whose DC have long flown the nest might indeed have extremely strong attachments to their pets. Obviously it's not a daughter substitute but he's simply saying how much she loved the rabbit.

Bit weird to make it all about you. Why not call her or send a card in sympathy?

CalmYaTits · 13/09/2016 12:37

2/10

Must try harder.

90daychallenger · 13/09/2016 12:38

Last time I checked, the rabbit didn't send her flowers for Mother's Day

I assume you did. Why? She's not your mum. Did your DH temporarily forget where the florists was?

daylilies · 13/09/2016 12:48

...sometimes I call the cat my last baby......

Memoires · 13/09/2016 13:07

It's a perfectly normal saying.

PovertyPain · 13/09/2016 13:08

I think he was just saying she lobed the rabbit a lot

No wonder the rabbit died, allthecarbs. Wink

Thinkingblonde · 13/09/2016 13:20

Did the batteries die?Grin

SandyY2K · 13/09/2016 13:24

It's nothing to do with you. He's just saying she really loved the rabbit.

So much over thinking. Why?

PovertyPain · 13/09/2016 13:31

Thinking that maid me roar! Grin No wonder the poor woman's upset!

TheNaze73 · 13/09/2016 13:49
