How were you proposed to?

My proposal was when I decided I wanted to go to lunch, he pulled out a ring and asked if I wanted to wear it, then asked me to pay half of the bill. Not the most romantic. Anyone had better than mine?

I didn't propose. After 28 years I still get reminded every fecking time it comes up on TV.

DH and I had been out with some people who were banging on about how pointless marriage is and what an outdated waste of time it was etc. DH was agreeing with them and I was feeling increasingly sad as I had hoped that one day I'd get married. The following night I brought this up, which led to a massive argument and him saying "lets just fucking get married then" and bursting into tears. I said he'd have to ask properly if he meant it, which he did a few days later.

We had just one of those nice long sunny days and we were sat on the sofa and he basically passed me the ring.

I think he was getting slightly annoyed that every time we went out for a meal, I was expecting it to be that moment (we had got the ring at this point)

me and DH had had a small heart to heart chat whilst strolling around town one day shopping. I was then waking around primark when he started saying the most unusual lovey Dovey things and kept stopping and standing in front of me and talking to my face. Kept smiling....

So I walked really fast out of primark and said I didn't need anything after all

Was I fuck getting proposed to in primark!!!!!

He did it on his knee at home in front of the fridge instead which was ok. I love food as well as I love my husband so it was kind of nice

We spent the day out together really doing fun things, and he had ample time to propose in the most perfect settings.

So anyway, dp proposed at Sloane street tube station, when I was utterly distracted as my train was pulling into the station, he wouldn't let me go so I said 'oh ok then, I'm going to miss my train'!

I tell him I only agreed because I wanted to get on my train.

It was the most romantic proposal and very 'us'. I love that I can tease him about it.

DH proposed in bed and asked me three times. Made him get down on one knee the third time after I'd said what did you say twice?!

We agreed to get married - no proposal, just a discussion.

I started to plan a wedding.

He freaked out a lot bit.

I stopped planning a wedding.

We agreed to get married again, about 6 months later. He only freaked out a tiny bit this time - about money, which is solvable as you cut your cloth etc. We booked all the things that needed booking. Passed an antique shop with a gorgeous ring in the window one Saturday afternoon. Bought said ring. He put it on my finger at a gig we went to. And later at home got down on one knee and did it again.

No romance, not really. Lots of love.

After DH was told he had weeks to live he asked me from his ICU bed. The proposal doesn't matter a jot - if you're married to someone who loves you then you are one of the luckiest ppl on the planet.

On holiday, on my birthday. We were in bed having breakfast and he said 'I got you an extra gift' (the holiday was his gift) and got out a gift wrapped box. I could tell what it was straight away, he's got the world's worst poker face!

At midnight on New Year's Eve ! Was very sweet and totally unexpected ! As he came back in through the front door, after seeing out the old year ! Was at his parents home ( we were visiting ) and his mum came out to moan we were letting the cold in by hanging about on the doorstep... she then realised what he was doing and stayed to watch ! (WTF?)

it was valentine's day and we were in trafalgar square. he stopped me in front of the fountains and asked me and i said yes! then spent the afternoon drinking champagne and grinning like a loon!

We'd already been together 13 years... happy together but I'd kind of given up hope of him ever asking me as he had always said that he wasnt the marrying kind .. One day we were out cycling by the sea (he was in front as usual) . I didnt quite hear him properly , but over his shoulder he said something like 'Well shall we get married then?' and then cycled off really fast! . When I caught up with him I said something like 'Did I just hear you ask me to get married?' 'Yes' said he .. 'Ok' said I .. We carried on cycling..

At the wedding a few months later our friends made him get down on one knee before we went in to 'ask me properly' .. he did but complained 'This is a Paul Smith suit I'm wearing and you want me to kneel down in it? .. He did though (that was 10 years ago this summer)

My dh was sedated to the high heavens when he proposed to me at the dental hospital The best part was they made him sign a declaration first that stated the dental hospital would not be held liable for any major decisions he made for the next 24 hours. Obviously it was good stuff!

I didn't even give that sucker chance to back down I took him straight to buy me a ring gums all swollen and raw

12 years on he still says he wanted to do it the sedation just gave him a little boost

It was really early in the morning and we were lounging in bed in our university digs. He was prattling on about love and the future and I was dozing back off to sleep when there was an expectant pause in his ode to Love and I cracked open one eye to see him looking hopefully at me. Not wanting to admit I had stopped listening at least 5 minutes earlier, I went with what seemed likely and assumed he'd offered to make tea. I gratefully accepted.

He wandered off looking crestfallen before bursting back into the room and declaring "I just PROPOSED Showy and you weren't even listening!"

Awww. Romantic, eh?

There was no proposal. DH cringes every time a proposal is featured on TV, and I pretend I would have loved a grand gesture. Really we are both glad we just came to the realisation that we were going to get married.

We were once out with friends at a karaoke bar (in the olden days) when our friend proposed to his girlfriend when he was on the stage and she was at the back of the room. He was a horrible attention seeker, but she accepted and they're still married. I'd have vomited into my lap if I had been her.

Love these stories. My friends get very bemused when i explain he just gave me a ring at home one evening. They all got proposed to on trips away, with a photographer waiting in the wings, champagne on ice, firework displays, string quartets etc, (allegedly)

It was our 3rd anniversary and we were about to graduate from uni.He suggested a day out in York so we went down on the train. After a lovely meal he suggested a walk on the city walls. About half way round he told me to sit on a bench, got on one knee in a puddle and produced a ring. I gawped for a good 30 seconds... Bless - we were 21 and 22! That was 9 years ago next month.

My mum had been diagnosed as terminal and not with long left. I told my now husband that he needed to marry me (so my mum could come) or leave me. Only when he hadn't decided a couple of days later and I said he needed to pack his things did he reluctantly agree. We've been happily married for 2 years, together for 10 - he would never ever have proposed as he was scared of a wedding (which he loved). I would have loved a romantic proposal but it's not important really!

These are all lovely stories. Each individual to the couple.

I am a hopeful girlfriend...

DP says 'when' we get engaged instead of 'if' so I suppose it's a good thing. We've both been married before so assume ours will be low key.

Anyway, to GP with these lovely stories, can we see pictures of the rings???
