I met my OH online after my divorce, I was really cautious at first and didn't introduce him to DCs until we'd been together about 5 months, but he's lovely and we have another DD together now :)

I did meet a few oddballs though, never felt threatened or anything just some were a bit odd. I had a good friend at the time and I always made sure she knew where I was going to meet someone for the first time just in case, and would text her when I got home xx

wonderingsoul · 15/05/2015 13:36

i met my current db online, been together 4 months and hes a keeper i think :)

TokenGinger · 15/05/2015 13:43

I did online dating for 6 months. Had some experiences which were eye openers.

  • One guy had a child he told me about by accident (I had specifically set my criteria to not show guys with kids so he lied on his profile). The first date turned out to be me questioning his lack of responsibility after moving 300 miles away "just because he fancied a change" and now money is tight he can't afford a train ticket so hasn't seen her for 5 months.
  • One guy asked if he could pick me up from my house for our first date, I politely declined and said I'd meet him there. A few hours later, he asked for my postcode to pick me up and I reminded him I'd meet him there. Then he blocked my number and the date never happened Grin
  • One guy sent me a picture of his monster sick measured up against a bottle of water. It was the same size in length and width. He asked did I want some, and I told him I wasn't thirsty and even if I was, I can't afford fanjo correction surgery.
  • Some were just the typical of what you'd expect on online dating. Just wanted sex. Didn't reply to texts often. It's about having the respect for yourself to walk away from those guys and not accept crumbs.

Equally, there were some guys I met who were great but just not my type for one reason or another.

I've met a great guy who I've been dating for five months now and he's lovely. I hope it'll develop in to something deeper as I think I'm already in love with him. He makes me feel very special.

There are some proper weirdos out there.

My friend went on a date with someone who she'd checked out as best she could beforehand (reverse searched his photos etc). Turned out he had no front teeth and had been banned from his dentist for aggressive behaviour so couldn't get them replaced.

I had a couple of people try and add me on Facebook when all we'd exchanged were a couple of "hello, how are you" messages. One of them took great pleasure in explaining how he'd found me like it was the most normal (and reasonable) thing in the world (it involved following a trail around several websites). I changed my username on the dating site and massively tightened up my FB security settings after that.

I had a few dates with people who were nice but just a little dull. No spark. I think that's the biggest thing to keep in mind really - you might exchange amazing messages with someone and then just not click in real life. That is tricky to get your head round.

On a positive note, DH and I both did online dating at the same time (we were friends before, that isn't how we met) but the site did suggest us to each other with a 98% match rate. So sometimes it does get it right!

One those water cooler ones. 20 litres.

Nabootique · 15/05/2015 14:37

I was only on a dating site briefly and I had one date (have posted about it before on here somewhere). He looked nothing like his picture, got incredibly drunk and had mother and drug issues, which he insisted on telling me about in detail. Obviously everyone has issues, but first dates aren't the time to talk about them. I told him the next day I didn't think we should see each other again and he sent me a MASSIVE essay back, which I didn't read, and just deleted my account.

I've decided it's not for me, not just because of that, but when I listen to my friends' stories it just sounds exhausting.

Lipgloss74 · 15/05/2015 14:58

I'm not ready to date at all yet but remembered from a while ago when I was online the horror stories-
I spoke to one guy who told me I'd have to meet him before 9pm as he was on a tag??!!
One guy I met for a few dates turned out to be engaged to someone else after I looked him up on Facebook and one guy asked me to send him a mobile phone so he could contact me whenever he wanted without firing up the laptop- aye right! Confused

I met my DP online. Met a right bunch of nutters for a start but learnt a few tricks and by the end was only meeting sensible guys. Met a few people I have kept in touch with as friends as well as dp but it takes perseverance and a thick skin. Grin

I met DH on eharmony. He is fucking fantastic.,

With eharmony bexause of the fees you have to be pretty serious.

I went on at least three short dates with the guys I talked too, I talked online with them all for a week or more. Made them wait. Made them understand there would be no casual sex. It worked. The guys I met all treated me with respect. I'm on another board with loads of women who met there DHs through internet dateing, predominantly match I think - none if us from the free sites though.

FlabulousChix · 15/05/2015 20:25

I met my flat mate on pof February 2013. We were in a relationship for 18 months we get in great but the sex never worked. We called off the relationship and he moved in as a lodger instead. Neither of us has seen anyone else though in 16 months. But we aren't an item anymore

Whatsforsupper · 15/05/2015 20:31

Match is crap.

Ok Cupid is very busy every where its also free.

Guardian Soulmate's is London centric but quiet outside London.

I'm male have used all three:)

Couple short relationships, lots of dates.......it can get tiring.

pocketsaviour · 15/05/2015 20:44

Be prepared for a huge amount of unsolicited dick pics and messages just reading "show us your tits" or similar.

Also a lot of time wasters who just want to chat.

Lots of people are talking to and dating multiple people, and will just do a fade without telling you why, which can be annoying.

HelenF350 · 15/05/2015 20:55

Tay, I found match a waste of money. It was just the same people as on pof but you had to pay! My best tip to avoid the weirdos is an odd one. I took my profile picture off but stated in my profile that I would send a pic. It meant people actually had to read my profile before messaging me which almost completely stopped the dick pics etc! If I contacted someone first I would send a pic and if I replied to someone I would always send a pic. I got much less messages but the quality of people that contacted me was greatly improved. Grin

I had two dates via Match.com but they came to nothing but then I joined POF and got chatting to a guy almost straight away and we met up two days later.

We moved in together four months later and he's now my DH and we have a 14 month old DS Smile
