How common are they? DH and I contemplating it after nine years together and two dc under six. I have been the one to initiate it but we've backed away from the idea due to thinking we need to stick solidly together with such little kids. I must say though that every time we discuss it our relationship feels stronger for it.

What about swinging? At least that way you would get to go to parties and events together and everything would be out in the open.

It's not something I would like to indulge in but it works for some people. Smile

Swinging doesn't appeal to me Wild. It's more the being open to the possibility of something. I like the posts that talk about it just being another part of their lives rather than a central thing.

Lots of people use swinging site to meet lovers. I have a partner but use a swinging site to meet other men. He doesn't get involved. The men are welcome to verify directly with him.

OKC is a good site for poly/open relationships too.

Marriage is just what people/societies decide it ought to be. There have been several cultures where righteous, conventional marriage involved one man and several women (not necessarily endorsing these, of course) and now it's legal and acceptable for two people of the same sex to marry one another. I do think that the fetishization of heterosexual monogamy might be on the way out.
