Film recommendations

A few days on holiday left and in the mood to watch a really good film that was a bit uplifting. Maybe something about someone who was unlucky in love and things got better. Just for a bit of inspiration....any suggestions?

I have a soft spot for tough little Jane Eyre. If you want someone that has a really rough start in life and is unlucky in love you can't beat the classic tale of one man, one woman and one secret wife in the attic occasionally setting fire to the curtains. (Hope that's not a spoiler)

That's such a great idea! Not watched that for years! I used to love romantic comedies and love stories but now find them so hard to watch because they are such unrealistic BS. All I am thinking is "as if that would happen?" and the people in it are generally so dysfunctional and full of it!

I mean...pretty woman...the man is shagging hookers.

The Imitation Game is a good film, if you don't mind wading through 1950's morals and ethics

Human Centipede?

The French film 'Priceless' is good. Audrey Tato/Tatou/Tattoo (you know the small dark haired one) as a high class party girl on the cote d'azur and hunting a rich man but finding love with someone unexpected.

It's funny in parts, uplifting and involves sunshine, the south of France and gorgeous clothes.....

And of course if you haven't seen it, Amelie. Another film with the gorgeous Audrey Tautou.

Love actually or Before sunrise.

'Best exotic marigold hotel' for uplifting cameos across all age groups! 'Because I said so' is good too.

They Came Together is on netflix, amy poelher and paul rudd.

Not brilliant but takes the mick out of rom-coms. A few laughs.

Scrap that - it isn't really good! Its okay.

Ha ha Random, you nailed it! Human centipede ! Always an uplifting experience! How about Pride and Predjudice, the TV one and the film version are both lovely, Colin Firth and Matthew McFadyeon both outstanding.

Hi OP,

I can't think of anything recent/romantic off the cuff, but I go back to the oldies when times are tough.

My all time top buck-me up film is 'Went the Day Well' - B&W, set in an English village full of stock characters and then it just biffs all the stereotypes and I just love it. It pose the question of 'what if' the Germans started off their invasion in a little corner of wartime England. It's scripted by Graham Greene and is way ahead of its time in many ways -lots of proper women in it (can you spot a yound Thora Hird?), documentary style filming and it is brilliant, stirring stuff. It always cheers me up. Ordinary people stepping up to the plate etc.

The other two are early Hitchcocks - The Lady Vanishes - bloody brilliant. Again, 'ordinary' types being required to do extraordinary heroic things. Margaret Lockwood brilliant lead female, and Michael Redgrave as her partner in a wildly spiralling spy caper. Fabulous, ludicrous story of scary spies, cross-continental trains, brave gels and evil nuns. Check out the beginning tracking shot across Alpine landscape/Hornby train set - it's just brill.

Then Hitchcock's 39 Steps - spine-chilling, funny, derring-do, wild plot turns, Memory Man, Peggy Ashcroft as the brave crofter's wife, car chases and more scary spies and fifth columnists, sexy as well. Heart-warming stuff.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind...it's so funny, touching, magical, and original. The music is beautiful, acting superb. Jim Carrey NOT being all Jim Carrey, for once.

Oh I know... a more recent one. I haven't seen it for agest but I loved 'Speed' for cheering me up. I think I must be a fan of pure nutty escapism.

I loved Speed coz it was such a ride. Keaunu Reeves as 'himself' i.e. a bit wooden at the best of times, Dennis Hopper being brillantly silly and Sandra Bullock as your traditional spunky heroine who plucks huge quantities derring-do from her girl-next-door on a bus schtick. Its very funny. Takes the mickey out of itself. It goes on one 'chapter' too many and overdoes it in spades, but it sure takes your mind off stuff!

p.s. Do not touch Speed2 - utter turkey.

In Her Shoes - bit of a cheesy chick flick but quite empowering all round. Toni Collette is in it and I think she's a brilliant actress.

If you have never seen it, I would strongly recommend Hobson's Choice. Great British at cast including a very young john Mills. Laughable look at society positions and how to upset them. Strong female lead.

Pierce Brosnan as an international jewel thief who gives it all up and proposes to Salma Hayek with "the first diamond I ever bought"...this is a good movie for January as set in Carribean. And you can turn the heating up and dance to Rupee's Tempted to Love.

The 'Love is...' words by John Hurt. And the most amazing Greek scenery....again perfect for January.

I posted earlier, but I just recalled the final scene where Juliette Binoche is driven away through the sun-dappled trees, and having gone through the entire film, with all its parallel stories, its loss, all set in the War, and for her to make it through, it is so uplifting.

Bram Stoker's Dracula - this is a wildcard suggestion. OK, so there are some typical 'vampire' scenes, but not too graphic and Francis Ford Coppola created a love story. The 'I have travelled across oceans of time' speech and the final scene...this is a must see...Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder.

This lot should keep you busy until....oh Monday lunchtime.

I love 'Bad Santa' with the incomparable Billy Bob Thornton. It's disgraceful, disgusting and one of the funniest films I've ever seen. Not exactly a moral tale ... and DON'T let the kids watch it!
