A few days on holiday left and in the mood to watch a really good film that was a bit uplifting. Maybe something about someone who was unlucky in love and things got better. Just for a bit of inspiration....any suggestions?

As Good As It Gets is a good film starring Jack Nicholson and gorgeous Helen Hunt. Starts off a bit down but gets more uplifting as it goes on.

Is Love Actually uplifting?!!

I watched it over Christmas for the first time and cried the whole way through! Sad

FolkGirl · 10/01/2015 19:30

Annie Hall

"Is Love Actually uplifting?!!"

I haven't seen it for a while but I thought everyone lost out in that film except for Bill Nighy and Rab C Nesbitt getting it on.

Great suggestions all, have a bunch of them at the ready for an evening in!

You'd better make it a long evening then if you've bought them all; I counted about 32 recommended films in this thread including the one about the centipede in the plughole, which you can start with to get you in the mood for fun.

Twinklestein · 10/01/2015 19:44

Including the viewer...

jessmay · 10/01/2015 19:46

MadeMan, I have a bunch of them...not bought any!

WanderingTrolley1 · 10/01/2015 19:47

As good as it gets.

MadeMan · 10/01/2015 19:47

That's good then if you already have them. Smile

Deserttrek · 10/01/2015 19:57

omg...just remembered...

A Month In The Country starred Natasha Richardson. Set in Yorkshire Dales I think, she is the curate's wife and he is a young church restorer, I believe it was around the 1940's. There is a scene where she brings him lunch and they talk about an apple and all its qualities as an analogy about their separate lives. I remember seeing it a long time ago...about 1995 I think. I haven't seen it for a long time...one of those films lost in some mildew.

Hey OP, I want to not go in to work this week and see all these films again......I love film.

The Before Sunrise/Sunset with Ethan Hawke are the most beautiful love stories. They have to be seen in order though.

jessmay · 10/01/2015 21:35

watching eternal sunshine, half way through and can't help wishing you could really do that!

Solid choice OP! WinkSmile So glad you've watched it. Just the whole idea is brilliant and so beautifully done throughout the film.

Valsoldknickers · 11/01/2015 00:22

The Wedding Singer with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, such a great film and totally ticks all the boxes you wanted to tick! Sorry if I have x posted.

Drumdrum60 · 11/01/2015 01:22

The family stone....uplifting.......much better than you think it would be. Love it

poppyfield -went the day well -I thought I was the only person in the world who liked that film.Another Hitchcock which I would recommend is Rebecca .He denigrated it because it was a "woman's film" -worth watching for george sanders performance as the sleazy jack favell and joan fontaine as the naive second wife

nenehooo · 11/01/2015 11:58

The English Patient is one of my favourite films... "Of course, you idiot. I'm always wearing it. I've always worn it. I've always loved you."
Juno is good for a bit of comedy.

jessmay · 11/01/2015 13:15

Thanks all. Bit of "In Her Shoes" this morning and it's great too!

Hey Member - you're a woman after my own heart! I have a sneaking suspicion that Went the Day Well has a big following - bit of a cult one I think. I also almost mentioned Rebecca - as it is also a favourite but wasn't sure if it fitted OP's spec. Agree with you about George Sanders. My favourite bit is when Mrs Van Hopper stubs her fag out in a fried egg! Dear old Monte!

I could have a whole thread on WTDW. Better not hijack this one. All the best.
