group of us at a friends house last night having drinks before we head out to pub

I was upstairs waiting for the loo to become free and overhead dp saying to his mate "I've got her a ring "

they seemed to be discussing my birthday which is in two weeks as they were talking about where we would go and what we would do

could I have misheard? is he going to propose? it could just be that he has got me a ring couldn't it?

now I cannot get the comment out my head and am surpisingly excited about the prospect of a proposal

however there is a definite part of me that thinks this must be something else...

I once had a misunderstanding over a ring, my (now) husband comes from a different culture and rings don't mean quite the same thing as they do here. I don't know on this one- is your partner likely to propose? Would you like to get married? Are you likely to end up sobbing and shouting at him if by the end of the birthday he hasn't proposed?

Only you know the answers to these questions, or rather he does, I really don't think we are in a position to say what he's going to do.

ok. I understand no one can say what will happen. I suppose im just putting it out there.

I am totally my own worst enemy. I need to get this out my head as there ia potential for upset isn't there.

Rings make very special gifts. DH (many moons ago) bought me a diamond ring with his first 'real' paypacket. He has since bought me rings after having dc2 and dc3 too. They are all special and I wear them all the time. We never bothered with an engagement ring because we got married fairly quickly after he proposed.

I had one of these moments with my DH, actually two now I think about it, where I thought he was going to propose and didn't

First one he was taking me out for dinner for my birthday and as we left the house he said 'ooh I'll be right back' and I spotted him putting a bottle of fizz into the fridge! So I was on pins and needles the whole evening - no proposal! When we got in, he said 'I've got an extra pressie for you in the fridge, I know how much you love this fizz' Lovely thought, lol, totally buggered up my own evening by assuming more!

The other time was even more silly - I was tidying in his office and found a ring sizing chart in his top drawer And he never buys jewellery! Again, I was expectant for a week or so, then he gets a parcel in the mail... 'What's that?' I ask... 'It's my magnetic ring!!' He says, obviously dead excited, 'I got it to do some magic tricks with the kids' (he's a teacher!)

So yeah, don't expect anything!!

(We are now happily married after he properly surprised me when he did propose!)

She's a grown woman. I'm sure she'll get over it if it's not a ring. If it is then it is something to be excited about. Marrying my DH was one of the most important decisions that I made and defined my life so I think its pretty sad to be nonchalant about a possible proposal.

OP, you will get over it quickly if its not a ring won't you? :) As you say, no expectations is best way to go but too late now isn't it? Just enjoy the day.

My DH got me a ring for my 21st, which we spent in Paris. We had been together nearly 3 years. It wasn't an engagement ring - that didn't happen for another 4 years.

I didn't expect an engagement (despite everyone saying "ooh, Paris, bet he proposes" beforehand) so I wasn't disappointed.

I was a tiny bit disappointed that the purchase of a ring meant it would likely be several years before I got another one (I only wear one ring at a time). But I knew that we were saving for a deposit, blah, blah, and the timing of our engagement was very practical and as we had discussed (almost immediately after we were in a financial position to get married straight away).

Have you discussed the future much OP?

we have discussed the future in that we plan to make a life together.
the only time marriage has ever been discussed is with me saying that marriage should be a 5 year contract and renewable (or not) depending on how the couple feel at the time haha...i was divorced in 2008 and never really expected to get married again
so its unlikely in fairness that it will be a proposal. I would love a nice ring though (as in nice bit of jewellery)

Me and my partner were on holiday in America and he didn't propose at the top of the empire state building so I've given up hope.

I had a boyfriend of seven years, who I lived with, who bought me a ring, it was THE most awkward birthday moment ever. He'd literally just bought me a ring. It hadn't even occurred to him that there would be a horrible moment when I wondered which finger it was for and it dawned on him what I was thinking. I never wore that ring as it was such a relationship defining moment and not in a good way. I hope your ring is what you want it to be but please brace yourself if not.

There really should be a "diarise this thread after the OPs birthday" button so that we can find out if there was a proposal.

I'm with Chase - if you want to be engaged why don't you propose and choose a ring together? Or get engagement hiking boots like my friend did
