It's the quality of the company which makes a restaurant, or anywhere else "romantic". There's romance in a pie and mash place if the company is right.

Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden has a lovely vibe - especially the conservatory bit.

Le Gavroche is very corporate to my mind. Fab food but I don't really find it romantic.

Nobu on Berkeley Street is sexy rather than romantic but I love it there and the food's excellent. You typically need advance notice to book though. L'Atelier in Soho/Covent Garden is probably the sexiest restaurant I've ever been in - very seductive but not really romantic; I think that's my most favourite place to eat in the whole world. The most romantic restaurant I've ever been in is in Edinburgh - The Witchery. It is quite beautiful. Worth a weekend treat if the London restaurant works like a charm!

I love Benares, but I don't find it particularly romantic. I think it's the lack of windows.

If I wanted a romantic London restaurant a good view or outside space would be a big factor.
I'd look at restaurants such as Babylon at the Roof Gardens, Kensington; the Oxo Tower restaurant; Kaspers Seafood Bar at The Savoy with cocktails before in the American Bar; Orrery, Marleybone High Street or Coq d'Argent at One Poultry.

If you'd like any more suggestions I can keep thinking.

And I agree that Gavroche is not sexy/romantic. Too many execs/food writers/tourists.

Andrew Edmunds on Lexington St in Soho. Not sure if you'd call it upmarket as such, but it's very cool, small and intimate.

Oh, the bar at J Sheekey is fab also. And a seconding for l'atelier de Joel robuchon. V sexy. Very euro but sexy.

OK for drinks, a bit more corporate or visitor for dining. Not romantic, more obviously try-hard IMO.

La Petite Maison. Food is divine and a gorgeous intimate room. Not flashy at all.

Never been there (Shard). I did try to go the restaurant (Chinese I think) without a booking last summer but I was refused entry by the doorman as I breached the dress code. It was blazing hot and I had red cropped Capri pants and cute little 50s style plimsols, bright pink with white trim. My sister was wearing those dressy black sequinned flip flops. The doorman stopped us going in as trainers and flip flops breached the dress code. I tried to explain the difference between cute little pumps and trainers but he could not see it so I figured arguing the toss for flip flops wouldn't have worked either... I guess the moral of that long story is, if you do go to The Shard, check the dress code first!

I have
a placeholder booking at Babylon as you suggested but still looking as I would like to make it a memorable week. One week night and one sat night.
