The Brave Babes Battle Bus - Walking In A Winter Sober Land!

Mouseface · 15/12/2013 00:41

Hello Brave Babes, I'm Mouse :)

Welcome to the 'Bus Of Fun' (now you've come of age!) Grin

This is a thread for those who want to give up drink completely, or are maybe thinking about doing controlled drinking, or cutting down slowly, with a view to quitting or not... it's up to you.

You know your limits, you know what is required, it's in your hands. And only you can make it happen.

Whatever your goal, you'll find support here. Always.

There will be talk of drinking and those who fall off the Bus (arse over tit) will post about it, so if that is going to jeopardise your chances of complete sobriety, then maybe the DRY thread would suit you better, as they are complete abstainers. :)

That said, this Bus is happy to have you no matter what, as long as you can cope with chat of drinking, nights out/in, failures, cyclical drinkers, etc......

Everyone has always been welcome here and shall remain to be.

No-one is ever turned away. EVER.

There are no hard and fast rules, other than the support here is unconditional, it may be in the form of tough love at times, but it's always meant with the very best of intentions.

There are two sayings that we like here -

    • The Vulnerable Need Our Support, Not Our Judgement
    • Alcohol Fosters Inertia

The rest kind of happens as the posts appear.

I hope that's okay with you all.

You'll find the last thread HERE, THAT WILL LEAD TO THREADS BEFORE IT, SOME HISTORY

And the original and real, truly heartfelt reason that we are here in the first place is HERE. A VERY SOBERING READ

The Bus may be 'mythical', but the support is real, honest and will help you to achieve what it is that you seek, as long as you are honest with us, but mostly, YOURSELF

See you soon. x

beaches I have just herd that they have had to bring the pola bears inside at the zoo in NYC Shock because its too cold ....
Hope your keeping warm honey

marvellousme · 07/01/2014 15:13

Two things have struck me today.

beaches How lovely to be included on the list - makes me feel part of something bigger and keen to contribute. If my name wasn't there in lights so to speak I'd have sidled off but now I can't so thanks for that.

Also, sober reminds me how much I used to love going to bed but now I stay up until midnight just to finish a bottle of wine Shock that was a real wake-up call right there. Thanks.

So, my plan this evening is to continue to cut down and go to bed much earlier with an Ovaltine - set up some kind of pre-bed ritual maybe.

You have no idea how much you've all helped. I've been thinking about you all day Flowers

soberisthenewblack · 07/01/2014 15:22

you know how not drinking makes you clear headed and able to think straight etc etc. well I have been waiting on a delivery since early this morning and I just checked my order and its NEXT feckin Tues that its being delivered .
So do I drag my tumble drier out of the back garden and reinstall it or do I do without it for a week aaaaaaaaaaaaargh DH is away until next week as well Angry Angry at my stupidity

soberisthenewblack · 07/01/2014 15:31

just checked tumble drier the rain has pissed down on it all day. I really cant bring it back in can I ?
How could I have been sooooo stupid ...........was it feckin likely that John Lewis could have delivered it in less than 24 hours !!!!!!!!!!. Think I have destroyed brain cells with excessive drinking.
Off to Asda to buy something trashy for dinner not sure I will bother with the soap powder

beachestoexplore · 07/01/2014 15:45

Grin at Spanno and diseased estate.

beachestoexplore · 07/01/2014 16:07

joey I am not entirely sure, but, on Faire's calculation thing we have been given 1200 because it is around 500 less than we need to maintain current weight. By my reckoning, even if we eat 1400/1500 we are still under eating so should lose a bit, albeit slower than the forecast. I am not including tea and coffee or spread either, are you?

Im it seems we are currently warmer than the polar bears! The fire helps and we have good insulation thankfully. Why is in NYC I think so she may be feeling the chill today. Thank you for thinking of me x

Marvellous I am really pleased that you are pleased about the list Smile. It is so much more inspiring to know there is some support out there. Ovaltine, blast from the past! - good plan for new bedtime ritual. I wash my face and moisturize now (instead of looking in the mirror through wine eyes and thinking 'not too bad, I'll take the make up off properly in the morning' and staggering off to bed Blush)

Sober oh dear! Can you do the minimum washing this week and hang it on the radiators? I bet you were really excited about it coming today too. Although 24 hour delivery doesn't sound that far fetched to me, I would probably have assumed the same Smile

SweetLathyrus · 07/01/2014 16:13

Hats off to you Spanna arts and craft club sounds like my idea of noisy messy hell - much as I would have been there like a shot if DS had every been interested.

Right, all I could think about on the drive home was a lovely glass of Viognier, so, because this is a day I AM NOT GOING TO DRINK, I have walked past the kitchen, and the radio; the washing up can wait.

SweetLathyrus · 07/01/2014 16:15

Oops, didn't realise you were all on the next page!

SweetLathyrus · 07/01/2014 16:28

beaches we appear to share a skin regime!

beachestoexplore · 07/01/2014 17:25

Be warned Sweet, I currently have a big teenage spot which I can only assume is a reaction to the new regime.

oh, god Spanna help!

spanna41 · 07/01/2014 17:38

Shock Beaches oh no I hope it doesn't turn into a Wort Thingy!!!!!! Grin diseased estate (I didn't even notice!!!)

Thank you Baby and Sweet

Sweet do you have an airer that you can put next to radiator? Bloody John Lewis, completely understand why mistake was made. I would have assumed today and not in a weeks time. I wouldn't reconnect the old one not if it's wet. x

Marvellous Horlicks is the other drink, quite yummy, once you get used to it Smile

I can feel a little whisper from WW, think I'll just hong kong Fooey her, bitch!

SweetLathyrus · 07/01/2014 17:51

I'm getting a really itchy patch of eczema under my chin, but I'm sure the zits will be along shortly Beaches. . . What a pretty bunch we make.

Spanna, tonight! I will mostly be stomping on WW with my Doc Martins!

I think Sober was the one with the tumble dryer garden ornament, this is not a good month to be without one (that does make me sound a bit spoilt doesn't it, but it's just SO WET).

spanna41 · 07/01/2014 17:58

ooops sorry Sweet I meant Sober really I did Hmm I've never had a tumble drier, used to have a washer/drying but never used the drier. What I do know is that they cost a fortune Shock but there is nothing like putting on a warm piece of clothing Smile

SweetLathyrus · 07/01/2014 18:13

Have to admit I try to avoid using mine, but between November and March even on a dry day my garden get no sun or breeze so I just have to suck it up.

" but there's nothing like putting on a piece of warm clothing"

Errr, depends who's taking it off for you' Blush

Crotchstitch · 07/01/2014 18:19

Evening all :)
Sadly the spots have been an unforeseen byproduct of DJ Hmm I like to think it makes me look youthful :o

spanna we lived in a mobile home for a year. We needed temporary accommodation for a short while and realised that it's location left us firmly in catchment for a very good feeder school that DS was uncertain to get into otherwise. So we stayed! It's ok when you get used to it. The lack of space becomes less of an issue once you've decluttered and the lack of bills is quite freeing. We did 2 winters which was an interesting experience. Keep the place warm all day is my tip, turning heating off at night or when out is false economy as the heat leaks away and you are left back at square one.

soberisthenewblack · 07/01/2014 18:28

evening all Grin I only use tumble drier sparingly so its not a big issue I am just annoyed at myself for waiting in all day with a hyperactive dog.
Weather miserable again so I am going to walk the dog much to her relief and sink into a large bubble bath........bliss
WWW not bothering me too much tonight yet but God the nights are long without a drink .I now have so much more time on my hands and fell a bit Blush at all of the times I complained about there not being enough hours in the day .No wonder people used to look at me like thisHmm When I was always so disorganised and stressed.

spanna41 · 07/01/2014 18:51

Crotch thank you for your top tip Smile

Crotchstitch · 07/01/2014 20:28

Well that's day 7 done :)
In bed catching a couple hours pear before work tonight and I am genuinely amazed at how much easier my life is!
My uniform is ironed in the end of the bed, DH & DS also have uniforms ironed and ready. All 3 lunches are done, washing machine ready and on timer, same with dishwasher. We had a home cooked dinner that I really enjoyed preparing, DS has been properly supervised in all his music practise, homework etc, I popped to the shops and the dogs have been out for a good walk. Oh and is aged to sleep as well :)
Even if I had only had a couple of drinks all of this would have been so much harder and lots would be left till the last minute. It has truly been the biggest revelation to see how much actual physical time I have lost by drinking Hmm

Crotchstitch · 07/01/2014 20:29

What shocking typos and I am stone cold sober :o

casawasa · 07/01/2014 20:52

Hi, lots of you are doing so well on here. Tomorrow will be day 1 for me. Can you give me some help to make it through one day? I know there isn't an easy answer but what practical things can I do to help myself? I would love to be celebrating day 7!
Thanks

whydidthishappen · 07/01/2014 21:05

Casa Welcome! Tell us a bit about your drinking habits and we can come up with some ideas to help with Day 1. You can do it!

marvellousme · 07/01/2014 21:12

Hi, I'm doing well but just popped in to say I won't be continuing on this thread. I'm finding mumsnet a bit difficult generally and need to put all my strength into staying within my drinking limits.

Good luck and thanks for helping me start my journey towards drinking less.

Logging in here means I get wrapped up in reading other discussions which isn't helpful right now.I'm not disciplined enough to not peek at all the threads here and one of my resolutions was to keep my online activity to a minimum so please excuse me - wishing you all continued success. It was hard to explain myself but better than not coming back to explain IYSWIM!

whydidthishappen · 07/01/2014 21:16

Good luck marvellous!

casawasa · 07/01/2014 21:28

Good luck marvellous.

My life has been difficult for a few years for various reasons. I compensated by drinking the occasional gin in the afternoon and a bottle of wine at least at night. Now I am very happy and my life is much better but inevitably I am left with this horrible habit that is beginning to damage my health.
I could really do with some strategies for the 4pm dip. What can I do when i usually pour myself a gin in a mug at 4pm?
Can anyone recommend any useful books I can read to help.

aliasjoey · 07/01/2014 21:33

beaches I counted a cup of tea with skimmed milk (4 calories) but haven't counted spread - trying to figure out how much I'd used on 5 crackers gave me a headache!

But if you always have the same, you could build a recipe? I find this a really useful tool. Say you want toast with spread and jam, you figure out what each part costs and save it, then you can eat it anytime... my obsession with this has actually pushed thoughts of drinking out of my head Confused
