Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you wishthat we'd heard the Reverend Shula preach over the festive period, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

I am all Archered out after the excitement Hmm of the 75th anniversary yesterday, the special drama (Truth and Lies), the podcast, you name it. Now it looks as if George is going to pull through, the hype seems a bit overdone. So it's over to you!

Completely agree and wonder also if she is really in love with Brad, or just in love with the contrast from George?

D'you remember when people used to be said to be "in love with being in love"? I think that Amber is in love with saying that she is in love.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/01/2026 17:29

So if she'd known what she was doing and had access to somewhere medical that was open for business on 29th December, she might have been just in time. OK, I withdraw my objection; but I think it was extraordinary to be so unsure about him that she had to run away to Ireland, come back and the following day decide to try for a baby and stop using contraception before going totally "off" him again less than a week later.

She doesn't seem to me to be thinking very straight, and I can't help wondering if she is capable of doing so.

Our local (very small town) Boots was only closed on 25th & 26th, then open as usual on Saturday 27th and Monday 29th. So there would definitely have been somewhere open in - say - Felpersham. The idea of her even considering going down the Breed-With-A-Grundy route is just depressing.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/01/2026 18:41

Ah. Trick I have missed: what time of day was it when she belted George and fled the house? If it was evening, it might have been after the shops were shut. In which case she'd have had to go the following day and it might have been too late anyway.

She's already gone down the Get-Married-To-A-Grundy-Who-Is-Prison route!

It's almost as though she is a vacuous nineteen year old 😆

Exactly. They are both very emotionally immature even for their age. You can just imagine after a few Christmas eve drinks, all of a sudden they are madly in love again and a baby is the perfect idea to prove just how much they love each other 🤦‍♀️

I think the slight needling of Brad was that she was expecting him to compete for her with George.

TottersBlankly · 22/01/2026 19:24

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 for Brad.

slughater · 22/01/2026 19:48

nooooooooo Amber, no, no, no, no, no

what is she thinking
we can only hope she has a mc (I'm sorry but this IS fiction)

TheUsualChaos · 22/01/2026 19:59

I think a miscarriage would make her even more determined to have a baby!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/01/2026 20:01

If it is less than a month in actuality (as opposed to a fictional however many extra weeks) she wouldn't even have known she was pregnant before she had a heavy period, back in the sixties and seventies. Just being "a bit late" wouldn't send you to a doctor for a pregnancy test back then, and DIY ones were not yet readily available. (It didn't occur to me to use one in the 1980s when I was having my children. And ultrasound scanning was not available for my first pregnancy.)

I think a lot of women then may have had early miscarriages and never known they had even been pregnant, which probably saved quite a lot of heartache.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/01/2026 20:01

Amber is doomed and Brad should run. Far, far away

I agree. When I was pregnant in 1979 I couldn't go to the doctor for a pregnancy test until I was 6 weeks late then it took two weeks to get the results. Anything could have happened in that time which would just have registered as Not Pregnant. In the event I had already got terrible morning sickness before I got the result.

B0D · 22/01/2026 20:27

I don’t know what to think about Fallon and Harrison. Will she realise that failure to hand herself in makes her a huge hypocrite re George/Alice. Harrison should be fired, maybe Fallon can DOB him in too when she confesses

But these days there are tests that will register BEFORE a missed period.
eg less than 2 weeks after conception

And how horrible it must be if you really want a baby and you and your partner are ttc, and you keep testing pregnant and then having a period as usual. Shudder.

muddyford · 22/01/2026 20:52

Can't forensics recover deleted footage? If the police knew there was anything to recover, that is. I don't trust Harrison.

EricTheHalfASleeve · 22/01/2026 20:53

I just don't care about Amber, or George. Amber can't be very bright or ambitious to have shacked up with George and be trying to conceive at 19 with a part-time retail job and unemployed boyfriend with anger issues. Or maybe she knows the bank of mum & dad will bail her out?
Chelsea is winning at life compared to Amber, and I think she knows it.

Even worse when they tell their other small children who then come in to school and tell everyone including the teacher (me). I'm sure it makes it more difficult if things dont work out.

Speaking from experience back in the very late 1980s and early 1990s, yes, it is horrible. We got there in the end, fortunately. I don't know when home pregnancy tests were first easily available in the UK, but as I recall they were very easy to get hold of and pretty reliable by that time. There was, fortunately, no testing for ovulation or anything like that.

Thinking about pregnancy tests, didn’t Amber reference “not being able to believe it when she saw the line”? But pregnancy tests have two lines: one to show it’s working and the other one only appears if you’re actually up the duff. Could she have misread it?

Dooof it on the fontanelle with its own bottle. It could become a Grundy / Horrobin Tradition.

JanFebAndOnwards · 23/01/2026 00:13

Yeah but didn’t she mean the line which tells you you’re pregnant?

This sounds as if it might be worth a look, if anyone is in the Badminton area in July. https://www.radiotimes.com/audio/radio/the-archers-bridge-farm-rhs-garden-75th-anniversary-newsupdate/

Perhaps they'll demonstrate how to claim on insurance when there's a sewage spill. With the starry twins drowning in it.
