Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it.

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Lillian and I both made the glue observation, so I thought that would be as good a way as any to kick off this new thread. We raced through the last one, for obvious reasons. This one may last until the funeral. Will Tamsin Greig find time to attend? I do hope so.

The poem Jennifer quoted in her journal is here: www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43775/rabbi-ben-ezra It's doubtful whether the last of Jennifer's life was the best, but she had plenty to contend with all the way through.

Over to you!

is Zebedee Soames still a CN?

No, he left. He has a show on Classic FM now, for anyone who’s missing him! His partner Christophe was on the Pottery Showdown until a couple of weeks ago. In fact I think they're about to tie the knot.

ILoveShula · 09/02/2023 19:42

Oh dear, did you mean sexiest, Fink?

ILoveShula · 09/02/2023 19:44

I loved his voice and name, @Catnary . Not keen on Susan Rae, cos she says Colonel as Kernel. It doesn't if you sound your Rs.

In case his lawyers are reading, definitely yes! I don't know what a sexist voice sounds like ... he has a voice that sounds attractive rather than misogynistic.

Anything happen tonight? I had a teenager talking incessantly over it (and, for reasons that would take too long to explain, playing Tubthumping by Chumbawamba, a song twice her age, on repeat). I got that Julianne called Ruairi and he agreed to come back to her, and that Lizzie wasn't happy about something with David. I'll have to LA once everyone's gone to bed. Right now I'm about to start a Zoom meeting and there's loud banging from the next room as someone tries to fix some appliance, I think the vacuum.

How else does colonel sound? I only know one pronunciation (apart from the French). And does she say colonel often enough to annoy you?

It doesn’t what if you sound your Rs?
I say it “Kurnul”, with the R sounded.

Yes, that's the sound I was thinking of. Like the kernel of a nut. But what other way is there?

ILoveShula · 09/02/2023 20:09

@Fink , his voice sounds ripe and fruity to me, like a caribbean punch or something or juicy fruitcake.
It might not have been her, but it was enough to have stuck in memory. It just seemed really weird to sound the RR in Colonel.

There was a World Service programme this morning about pasta, and the presenter kept referring to Tag-ya-telly.

JanglyBeads · 09/02/2023 20:24

(There is a world of different between sexist and sexiest.
And one letter.)
I only caught last 3 mins - teenager issues here too! I'll LA.
Will we hear from Julianne ever again I wonder?

Back in the day, Brian let people bury illegal waste on home farm, for money.
It leaked and polluted the Am.
Home Farm had to pay all the clean up costs that they couldn't afford. So as not to deplete the farm they sold the farmhouse. He was also prosecuted so was a fine to pay too, I think.

Aside from being a necessary plot device to "shake Ambridge to its core", I never understood why Brian 'fessed up.

The Environment Agency is tiny these days. Brian would have blagged it, given that it was such a long time ago and the only likely witnesses alive would have been the Grundys.

No, Brian would have been photographed for a Saturday Torygraph, regretting the 'good faith purchase' of contaminated land!

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/02/2023 21:06

I missed the last couple of minutes. What did Alice say to Julianne?

Fink · 09/02/2023 21:14

Susan Rae is Scottish, so she has a rhotic accent, although hers isn't very strong. Of all the CAs, she's one of the most likely to pronounce (extra) r sounds where an RP accent wouldn't have them ... I just can't hear in my head how an extra r could go into colonel when it already has an r. I've wasted twenty minutes of my life now trying to search for videos of Scottish people saying colonel!

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/02/2023 21:06

I missed the last couple of minutes. What did Alice say to Julianne?

That she groomed Ruairi and is a terrible person without a conscience or sense of humanity. All a bit dramatic.

Julianne flounced but not before threatening to involve her lawyers or the police (can’t remember which) if Ruari or Alice ever bother her again.

JanglyBeads · 09/02/2023 21:28

Her lawyers, obviously!

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/02/2023 21:34

This entire s/l would have been far more believable if Julianne was an older man.

suzyscat · 09/02/2023 23:12

Oh @Fink a mixture of blessings and curses to be bestowed upon you for introducing me to Petit Écolier. What have you done! Will have to embrace Lenten

The Julianne guff gets more preposterous by the moment but hopefully that's an end to it.

I do appreciate how irrepressibly and consistently Kate, Kate is.

There is no letter r in the word. But it is pronounced as if there were one. It’s an anomaly.

JanglyBeads · 09/02/2023 21:28

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when she consulted her lawyers about that one. The Sun and the Mail would have orgasms at the thought of reporting that case in the juiciest possible detail.

Americans also have rhotic accents.
Listen to how the narrator says “Colonel Sanders” in . I am sure that it is quite easy to find clips of Elvis talking about Colonel Tom Parker too.

Scarydinosaurs · 10/02/2023 05:26

As predicted, it has been Alice who saved Rauri.

I thought Ian was very unsympathetic and cold about Jennifer. He didn’t even say anything about his own grief! I found the entire exchange odd.

Hopefully N will hate the driving aspect for the modelling commitments and abandon the idea.

LizziesTwin · 10/02/2023 05:57

I think I need to listen to last night’s episode again, I must have drifted off (I LA in bed).

TeenDivided · 10/02/2023 06:42

I assume Ian & Adam have already talked about their own grief. This was a snippet of conversation directly about what to tell a 3(?) year old about death, especially given they didn't want to say gone to heaven.
