Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it.

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Lillian and I both made the glue observation, so I thought that would be as good a way as any to kick off this new thread. We raced through the last one, for obvious reasons. This one may last until the funeral. Will Tamsin Greig find time to attend? I do hope so.

The poem Jennifer quoted in her journal is here: www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43775/rabbi-ben-ezra It's doubtful whether the last of Jennifer's life was the best, but she had plenty to contend with all the way through.

Over to you!

@TeenDivided yes! I've never met anyone who has played this! It's a massive part of my child hood. Do you gang up on DH by sending him to Putney Bridge and then closing a station? Grin

Yes, but not too much as he would refuse to play!
What I have found is I often 'instinctively' know what line a station is on due to playing as a child, whereas DH struggles to find them.

Ruari seemed absolutely gutted. Has Julie Anne realised he likes her more than she likes him?

Tom n Tash and the rip off baby modelling is already boring.

It seems like something more mother related Envy Maybe he could buy her a Mumsnet vibrator.

Was there some comment in there too like: ‘you know the money my dad gives me, it’s all gone’ - is that new information?

TamzinGrey · 03/02/2023 21:37

"Was there some comment in there too like: ‘you know the money my dad gives me, it’s all gone’ - is that new information?"
My ears pricked up at that too.

He'll be out of the flat and back to Ambridge in no time. Hope he hasn't burnt his bridges.

Scarydinosaurs · 03/02/2023 22:32

Drunk Ruairi was excruciating. He’s had it.

I wonder where he will go now?

Did Ruari come out as bisexual during a game of Cluedo? I thought there was a later one but it's all feeling a muddle now.

It was during the game on 4th August, 2021.

The synopsis says
"Ruairi wins at Cluedo, which Brian wouldn't mind if it weren't that he taught him how to play. They start another game. Ruairi tells them that what Alice is going through isn't their fault: she hid things from them and probably thought she could deal with the problem herself. Jennifer says sorrowfully that she thought her children could tell her anything; Ruairi says he can. Jennifer realises that he might have something to tell them, and talks about bottling feelings up. Ruairi says he is bisexual; Jennifer seems happy with it, and Brian goes silent, then says he doesn't care what Ruairi is so long as he's happy. Or will be when he gets his exam results, says Ruairi ruefully. Jennifer thanks him for telling them; Brian tells him not to try to distract them from the matter in hand, the game."

I mentioned Chris Ghoti the other day in a thread about phonics and pronounciation! Is Chris a woman?

And does Mustardland still exist?

Interesting that Ruari was supportive of Alice at that point…

@Catnary Mustardland definitely still exists, and I waste as much time there as I do here .... I feel better about you mentioning CG elsewhere on MN, I had a sudden panic about privacy and personal names. No idea of whether CG is a woman or a man, I've never been able to guess; I have a feeling there was a name change a very long time ago, and cannot remember the previous one.

Do you remember years ago there was a poster called Cornelius Vermudyen, who was a cross between DadDadDad and AskingQuestionsAllTheTime? I think he was a young man (I have undergraduate in my mind) with a bit of an obsession.

LadyAddle · 04/02/2023 00:15

@Catnary That was really unfair, sending me that link & not wanting Mustardland one in return! - fascinating thread and my bath is now going cold. Fellow Scot here, muttering roar bore raw saw ... I'm only part way through it.
I don't remember Cornelius, but I do wonder what happened to Snarklehound, so clever and witty.

There was also LaSharpissima, who could be quite cutting at times. I think she was Scottish, and a solicitor. Pleas don’t tell me she’s you!

Anyway, better stop boring the Mumsnetters with Mustardland code, sorry!

Turning to tonight’s episode, I do hope the anecdote about Mungo and the car was a historic one, because he’s about eight now and no 8 year-old would be using a ride-in car, even if it were a posh electric one.

I did appreciate the description of how he had failed to revere the guitar as anticipated though- that I can absolutely imagine DS (6) doing, getting bored of it after 5 minutes and starting to swing it about. Quite amusing given how much emotion Lilian, Tony and Leonard had invested in the idea of giving it to him.

I also liked that James came through for Lilian in the end.

I was WeeKimmyKrankie but I was more of a lurker.

LizziesTwin · 04/02/2023 07:35

I’m so pleased Julieanne is giving Ruairi the heave ho. Ha ha ha.

faffadoodledo · 04/02/2023 08:10

I was a Mustardlander too! And remember being quite frightened of LsSharpissima. Redbookish was likewise quite errrr robust in her views. I was obsessed with ML for a while and still call Jenny Jenny Darling and Brian Brine as a result. Oliver was Foxbrush too as I recall. I see some of that code happens here too

TeenDivided · 04/02/2023 08:35

This is going to be another undergrad failure isn't it?
They don't seem to be able to find a way of letting the youngsters fly without leaving completely do they?

Either they drop out like Lily, or screw up like Alice, or quietly succeed then go off so far away never to be seen again, like Phoebe.

It would be lovely to see someone doing a good degree and then get a graduate level job in Felpersham or Borcester or even Birmingham, but then work from home with 2 days commute, and stay involved in village life.

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 04/02/2023 08:40

Yep Ruairi will most certainly drop out of university. I know we've all discussed this biut I just can't see why Julianne would see him as worth keeping on .

It baffles me. I'm a similar age I think and I can't imagine having a young man in tow nearly 30 years my junior. He seems immature and it would just seem so strange to her peers wouldn't it?

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 04/02/2023 08:41

Sent too soon....

I think we are meant to feel sorry for Ruairi but I'm just annoyed.

faffadoodledo · 04/02/2023 08:44

I can't fathom Julianne either - I'd have thought her 'arrangement' with Ruari would just make her look ridculous with her peers. But there again I've led a sheltered life..

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 04/02/2023 08:59

Me too and I'm in the public sector so don't know anything about the corporate world though I suspect never do the script writers.

iratepirate · 04/02/2023 09:04

It seems weird from a corporate POV as well.

Octothorpe · 04/02/2023 09:08

Me three. I know we’ve had this out before, but I so wish the SWs could explain why they think a rather earnest undergraduate in his very early 20s from a fairly ordinary, middling background (no shame intended, just the fact) would be such a witty and dazzling escort that the Very Important business colleagues of Very Important finance whizz Julianne (a mature woman in her….40s?) would be just thrilled when she takes him to the ghastly social events where it seems so vital for her to make an impression.

We all know these Masters of the Universe would be exchanging silent, significant looks and then, once she and R were out of the room, guffawing loudly. And actually, it doesn’t make me believe in Julianne as quite the shark-like go-getter the SWs obviously want us to see her as.

FallonsNewCoat · 04/02/2023 09:17

It’s just the BBC trying to be right-on and show women can have it all, just like men.

I think they want to make the point that if a man in his late-40s had an arrangement of this kind with a bright, young and sexy woman it would be socially acceptable, so why shouldn’t the same be true for a woman? The problem is that it just doesn’t work as IRL the double standard exists and cannot be inverted in this way.
