The Archers: Will Pip grow or Jill blow? Lil make her vow or Justin take his bow? Discussion #83

TA (The Archers) annoys me intensely but I still have to listen
I think there is a possibility that we obsess about TA in a way that most listeners don't

If this is you (genuine quotes from earlier threads), or you're new and want to ask anything about The Archers, then this is the right place.

PseudoBadger started it, but we're going to finish it (er, will TA ever finish?)

The panto is meant to be Sleeping Beauty, but are you expecting farce (Mother Goose Pip) or tragedy (Puss Cat in Wedding Dress Boots )?

This should see us through to Christmas. Xmas Smile Archers

At the end of the last thread we were remembering recent successful marriages in Ambridge. How long ago was Ed & Emma?

Pleeeeese no Gruach It takes me all my time to avoid the miserabilist Peaky thingy . Do not bring it's writers et al to TA.

I LIKE stuff that's sort of easy going and about 'normal' people.

Gruach · 28/12/2017 13:50

Oh, I agree we need the 'everyday story' element ppeat! Ms Dromgoole would surely bring a mighty helping of Home Front to TA.

Perhaps I'm odd in finding Peaky Blinders unfathomably uplifting? (Post-Christmas boxed set binge.) Dunno. Something about the jaunty rhythm of the language? (Or just CM's eyelashes - which can't really be replicated on the radio.)

I'm glad other people enjoyed Lynda and the goats. I just found it all so ... muted.

DeepanKrispanEven · 28/12/2017 14:01

I really hope we're not going to be treated to several episodes of Helen farming out her children amongst her relatives whilst she goes off to play Lady Bountiful. After the damage he suffered, surely Henry has to come first every time.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/12/2017 14:52

Graunch if only they employed actors with proper local accents in both TA and Peaky Blinders. The accents in the latter are shocking

But the Ambridge health fairy waved her magic turkey baster over Henry and any damage exerted by the wicked step daddy has been reversed.

birdsdestiny · 28/12/2017 15:18

Is it really wrong that I would rather go for a drink with Brian than with Helen and Pat.

AuldHeathen · 28/12/2017 15:30

No, not wrong , but do slap him very hard if there‘s any inappropriate touching.

AuldHeathen · 28/12/2017 15:32

And do find out what he really thinks ofJustin? And who does Brine think hurt Matt?

birdsdestiny · 28/12/2017 15:36

Thanks Auld, it still feels wrong though.

Abra1d · 28/12/2017 16:31

Brian is a brilliant, believable character.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/12/2017 17:09

Brine has definitely become more sympathetic of recent years

BertrandRussell · 28/12/2017 20:10

IRL would Henry still have a social worker?

AdalindSchade · 28/12/2017 20:22

Definitely not!!

Bekabeech · 29/12/2017 00:27

But the Ambridge health fairy waved her magic turkey baster over Henry and any damage exerted by the wicked step daddy has been reversed.
But in RL the damage done by Rob may well not become apparent for years.

ppeatfruit · 29/12/2017 09:06

Gruach The thing is with Peaky Blinders type stuff, is that the trailers are soooo abominably violent and depressing etc etc that rather than act as catnip they create in me a loathing of even wishing to see THEM let alone the whole bally series or whatever.

Why the TV companies have got the idea that we all want to watch 'pretend' misery is beyond me, considering that the news is vile enough!

DeepanKrispanEven · 29/12/2017 11:10

The panto stuff is all good fun, but I struggle to believe that Lynda would arbitrarily introduce completely new sections of dialogue without warning and just expect the rest of the cast to cope. It would be difficult enough for professionals to deal with, let alone amateurs. If I were Harrison I would be telling her that unless she undertakes to stick to the script the rest of the performances would be cancelled.

DadDadDad · 29/12/2017 11:15

When you say Harrison do you mean Alan? I know they sound similar, or do you think this is a police matter:

"Madam, according to the Dramatic Performances Act 1923, I'm arresting you under Section 4, the offence of inserting dialogue into a script without due notice." Grin

ppeatfruit · 29/12/2017 11:15

Deepan Have I missed where Allan is? (I have been catching up).

IIWM I'd threaten Lynda with a replacement. Silly.

DeepanKrispanEven · 29/12/2017 12:55

Errm yes, Alan's the one.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/12/2017 18:29

Oh I know. Alan and Harrison are identical. Why? Why the actual fuck would they do that? Have two characters with non-local accents sound exactly the same? God it's like the director really hates us isn't it?

cheminotte · 29/12/2017 19:08

I'm not sure I'd consider having a goat named after me to be a great honour, being asked to name one would be plenty!

Gruach · 29/12/2017 19:13

Is it coming ...?

Gruach · 29/12/2017 19:16

Oh. Xmas Sad

Almost ...

HatingTheBigShow · 29/12/2017 20:55

Surely Lexi is too old. I groaned at Ian's little hopeful gasp there.

BertrandRussell · 29/12/2017 23:08

Linda so wrote that review.
