When Jim first arrived to stay ,because of a broken ankle or some such, he was a right miserable bugger, he talked down to Shula and did himself no favours with her (she was looking after him). He improved with his health and when he realised that she wasn't a total airhead

He still is an intellectual snob though..

As for Lilian and the Dower House, I think the thought of Justin buying, and therefore owning, it will be what makes her realise she doesn't love him enough to be marrying him. She loves that house and it's been her home for a long time.

I agree.

I also agree they should be buying it together, but going by Justin's comments sometime in the last week or so about she won't need her own money once they're married, I doubt he'd accept that. I think he likes to have full control where possible - and I also don't think he has any understanding of any reason why a woman might want or need some financial (and other) independence with him.

And the jealousy over Matt having owned the house and still being a trustee is pathetic. It's part of the control.

Though of course, deep down, all three of them know Lilian still has feelings for Matt, but Matt is the only one who recognises it. And of course he hasn't given up. So Justin has reason to be insecure, but it's still pathetic, and if I were Lilian, it would do the exact opposite of endearing him to me in any way. I hope she was listening to the question she asked about if he still loved her, rather than his answer.

LillianGish · 05/08/2017 06:33

That is an excellent post Ebearhug - you have really clarified the situation for me.

TheAntiBoop · 05/08/2017 09:24

To give another view - Justin seems totally taken with lil and so sees what's his as hers - it's not like he's ever restricted her spending. Saying she didn't need the money back from Matt may have been to stop her worrying

As for Matt - his behaviour is clearly going to lead to something dodgy going down. Is that going to lead to him staying in ambridge? I don't think he is really showing much love for Lillian tbh.

He will probably get the house sold at way over value and then take the money.

ppeatfruit · 05/08/2017 10:21

Agree TheAnti

EBearhug · 05/08/2017 11:05

Justin seems totally taken with lil

Oh, I agree with that, and I think he thinks it''s live, but I think he expects to have the things he wants and to control them - and expects things to happen because he wants them to.

He may not have restricted Lilian's spending, but he was certainly starting to get a bit tantrummy about contacting the trustees and is expecting Lilian to fall in line - he's made a decision, so he thinks it should happen now, whereas in reality, if it takes a few more days to contact them and for them to reply, there's nothing time critical about it, other than Justin's ego wanting to remove all references to Matt, a if that will stop anyone thinking about him.

And surely no one, including Lilian, Justin and Matt themselves, actually believes Matt's just tidying up loose ends and will soon be gone forever?

TheAntiBoop · 05/08/2017 11:38

In Justin's position I wouldn't be happy about how the house is owned. Lillian has been a bit foolish about it.

I just don't like to always consider a motive must have malice behind it. I would like to think the characters are more balanced than that.

impostersyndrome · 06/08/2017 10:16

I hope that all this house buying talk will include some valuations: both of Lilian's Dower House and of Christine's Woodbine Cottage. There's is a bit of a hint to that happening, isn't there? Didn't Fallon mention having to have a survey done for the mortgage? With a bit of luck the mortgage company will lower the value. Anyway, wouldn't a sensible policeman like Harrison ask for three valuations before breezily offering the full asking price? I'm not asking for a detailed story-line, but some sort of veracity would make a nice change.

ppeatfruit · 06/08/2017 10:31

mposter Christine got Woodbine properly valued but offered Harrison a lower price to save fees etc., so of course they took it when they managed to scrape up the money.

impostersyndrome · 06/08/2017 10:41

Thanks, ppeatfruit, I didn't hear the bit about the lower price. But still, that was only one valuation. Normally when buying independently you'd get three. Then again, tricky to raise this under the circumstances, I suppose.

ppeatfruit · 06/08/2017 10:49

The Duxford sisters should be called Hester and Gordie Ramsenthal. A combination of bullying and food fussing, they sound like a combination of Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal Grin

ppeatfruit · 06/08/2017 11:57

Just heard the film and I'd missed Friday's ep. well ! No comments? Very interesting about Matt's shadiness (esp. about the Dower house) which seems to have no boundaries.

Gruach · 06/08/2017 19:05

Is Jill on drugs? Or very drunk?

She sounds completely weird!

Hmm
GrumpyOldBag · 06/08/2017 20:08

The Scriptwriters just aren't very good at doing nasty people are they? The Duxford woman would not have been nearly so unpleasant IRL I'm sure - she would be sufficiently self-aware to be behaving well in the community where she is opening a business. It was the same with Miranda. (Rob being the exception of course).

And I'm sure Brian would not have said "I'm a prominent local landowner ..." or whatever it was he said.

JennyWoodentop · 07/08/2017 02:34

I hated today's episode - all that forced comedy that just wasn't funny..... now Tiger being rude to people without them quite realizing it till afterwards, that's funny.........grumble grumble

ppeatfruit · 07/08/2017 09:20

She's getting excited and her false teeth are flapping Gruach Grin

Puggsville · 07/08/2017 11:24

I think that's a nasty ageist thing to say, ppeatfruit.

R4 · 07/08/2017 11:36

Hello Puggsville. I see from Advance Search that you are new to MN and therefore new to The Archers threads. May I extend to you a warm welcome to some of the nicest threads on the forum, where we tend not to pick fights.

TheAntiBoop · 07/08/2017 11:43

It's an ongoing joke that Jill overacts at times - she either sounds like the swanny whistle (to pips kazoo) or like she has something in her mouth.

The other actors have their foibles too

TheAntiBoop · 07/08/2017 11:43

Speaking of pip - it's been very nice not to hear so much from her!

ppeatfruit · 07/08/2017 13:19

Interesting to hear Alice "stirring it" with Pip about Rex.

Thank you R4. I tend to ignore, ignore ignore.

EBearhug · 07/08/2017 14:08

It was spam advertising which has been on all sorts of threads.

Mootsie · 07/08/2017 14:16

To me Jill always sounds as though she gets half way through a sentence then somebody pinches her bottom.
