I just thought it was all very pointed this evening, the way Ruth went silent and grouchy when Rob was there. Mind you, I'm not sure I can survive another storyline of Ruth making little gasping noises out in the barn. The only bright spot is that David has a terrible temper when roused and might treat Rob in the same way as he did the badger all those years ago. We could do with a nice murder storyline in Ambridge.

It was a few years ago. Alastair started playing poker (I think) with a group of mates. Matt was (either from beginning or later) one of the group. Alastair lost money to someone, Matt bought the debt and then intimidated Alastair to the point where he had to confess to Shula. It was not pretty. She confronted Matt but couldn't get him to rescind the debt.

So they had to take out a chunk from their savings. And Shula made Alastair join Gamblers Anonymous (?) and things were quite tense between them for a while. He still (I think, though not mentioned) goes to GA. I cannot quite recall if Lilian knew. I think she may have brushed it off.

So - Matt has never been sweet and cuddly...

Yes, A ended up owing Matt £££££'s. He said he would write off the debt if A would dope a racehorse (so M would make a lot of money). A got a fit of professional ethics and confessed all to Shula. And they had to take out a mortgage, just like ordinary people to pay off debt.

BoreofW Well done! I'd forgotten the doping scheme. (And the mortgage actually....) Just remember Alastair trying pitifully to minimise his disgrace by saying they both earned good salaries and were hardly on the breadline. Shula was withering.

I remember how outraged she was at having to get a mortgage (about £60,000, I think). So there they were, great big property, riding stables, two good jobs and NO MORTGAGE until then. She carried on as if they were about to be carried off to the workhouse.
