Why doesn't Lillian just split from Matt?

If she loves being with the terminally dull Paul so much, why doesn't she just tell Matt it's all over, ask him to leave and install Paul in Ambridge? It's her house, isn't it?

She's not tied to Matt through kids or financial necessity, and she doesn't seem to like him very much even when he's trying to be nice to her.

Is it just the thought of Peggy's cat's bum face that's stopping her?

I agree that Lillian just sees Paul as a dalliance - she wouldn't leave Matt for him. I think Matt was being such a s**t over the business and that old couple's house that she's angry with him. the affair is payback. I think she's cooling with Paul now isn't she?

I think Matt made, ermm, an advance on Annabel a few years back, but she turned him down.

Re: family back story - Matt was adopted and he (much later) found his birth mother, but she wasn't interested in him. Then (I think!) when Matt was in prison, Lilian either had another go at finding his birth family, or was contacted by Paul (Matt's half-brother) to let Matt know his birth mother had died.

I don't think Lilian had an affair with Paul while Matt was in prison - I think she really liked Paul, but it went no further than lingering sort of stuff along the lines of we might have got things together if life had been different. But when Matt was released from prison, he didn't want to know Paul. In fact he was quite nasty about him, and Lilian got a bit upset about it all.

Am happy to be corrected about any of this!

Had totally forgotten about the Paul long lost brother thing! Thanks.

Not right tho, is it?

I agree it's all a bit dull, but quite realistic. She got together with Paul when Matt was being his most Mattish, now the whole tenancy thing is forgotten and he's being considerate (changing Peggy's lightbulb etc) it's not so clear cut for her. They don't have anything tangible keeping them together, but they have been together a long time and they are essentially well-suited. Of course in the meantime she's got closer and closer to Paul so now she doesn't know what she wants.
I am finding the Archers very missable at the moment - can't think of a single plot that has me on the edge of my seat. I was wondering if Elizabeth and Ifty might get together - some of their exchanges seemed to be hinting at that. And what is the point of the new herd manager??? I'm hoping they have some plans for him, but can't think what they might be.

Also I agree with poster upthread: surely the dreadful Paul should by now have at least suggested, 'Why don't you leave him and come and live with me'?

Everyone's dream to leave Ambridge for Watford, after all! Confused

LillianGish The only unrealistic thing is that they never discuss the possibility of Lilian leaving Matt!

I did an actual LOL at the conversation when Lillian said "I'm sorry, I know you wanted to go for a drive" and Paul said "There's some beautiful countryside around here". Yeah, the ring road is gorgeous :o

PrincessFlorimonde I agree with every particular EXCEPT IMO Annabel and Matt were about to "do it" she seemed up for it and I remember them being disturbed just in the nick of time.

Matt being rejected a 2nd time by his biological mother sets the psychological scene for him disliking and being jealous of Lil's family and his brother as well. That's why I think his being 'nice' to James and Peggy is actually him showing how desperate he is to hang on to Lil.

Eminence: love that about the ring road!

ppeatfruit: Lil? I realised after I started the thread that I spelled Lilian wrong in the OP. But LIL? Shock

(You're probably right about the Matt and Annabel thing, though.)

Matt's obviously concerned. Maybe he'll set a private detective on to LILian?

You are all totally right. But now he has turned completely into a sap, he'll be too scared to ask her to leave Matt in case she tells him to shove it.

Also, Lillian was attracted to Matt because he is a burly whealer and dealer who can 'andle himself. She won't be interested in Paul long term.

I wonder if he's going to get unreasonable when she chucks him?

Brine and Annabel? Don't tell me they had a 'nearly' moment too? I see someone upthread said this too. My memory's obviously shot to pieces...

Princess I think a private detective could be quite Matt-style. I reckon that's what he'll do.

I reckon Peggy will rumble her first.

Oh yes 'and Brine' Olivia and princess I reckon Annabel was (we haven't heard from her for a while have we?) used by the S.W.'s in a very unfeminist way as the Borchester Land bike Shock!

Maybe they'll turn it round and Paul will turn nasty when he realises Lillian won't leave Matt? He and Matt are related after all - perhaps he's not as nice as he seems!

Surely not Matt and Annabel? It was Brian- I don't think Annabel's into rough trade is she??

Didn't Matt get the chance to have compassionate leave from prison to see his dying mother, but refused?

And yes, I definitely think Elizabeth and Ifty is going to be a thing.

seeker, I think that at one point Matt asked Annabel out for a meal.

We all know that in Archers' speak that's tantamount to asking her to run away with him to the nearest Novotel. Shock

Meantime, an Elizabeth-and-Ifty storyline seems to be a popular prediction here.

I think Paul is going to turn out to be a bad 'un. Might he murder Lillian? That would be fun- there isn't a court in the land would convict him......

The near shag was in the Dower House and Lilian walked in just before they decided to go upstairs. IIRC.
