Following on from the last thread (Chronophoto Guess the year. Part 9!)

We're all different. I like to work out from the visual clues, researching details of fashion or movie titles or events. But sometimes it's just instant recognition, like yesterday's fallout shelter or the Irish civil war ones.

I played a random one earlier which had a pic that combined an American cityscape with a beer barrel delivery, so went off to check the dates of prohibition.

I tend to just go on visual clues. If there was an obvious sign or flag I may google - it also depends on how much time I have.

No, I never go to Google personally, I just guess.

A few times I have gone to Google after guessing all 5 photos, as I have been convinced that a particular photograph isn't from when it says it is. I have been right a few times too. One was flagged up as 1936 on here the other day, and several sources on the internet/Google said it was 1916-1917. It doesn't happen often, but it has happened a few times.

I usually just look at the photos and make what I hope is an educated guess.

I tend to go by the fashions, mainly. Occasionally they will give you a helpful clue like the name of a film or whatever and then I guess the ballpark for that. The only time I’ve googled is when it’s something famous (noon landing, etc.,) and I want to check my guess is near to that or I’d feel a bit silly getting it wrong!

Nope, I never google for help.

Is it help? I'm doing the observation and working out what the questions are. It's like using reference books when doing crosswords. Admittedly it's lazier to look up movie dates online than it would be to use my trusty old Halliwell's, But Halliwell would give the same info. It's the standard archaeological or art historical research technique, go check the 'typology' and the comparisons.
