Buggy board for 2 year old. Yes or No

I am about to buy a buggy board so please just either tell me to go ahead or stop me.

DD will be 24 months when baby arrives.

Have already bought a new single pram without thinking too much about it.

Hoping dd will be ok on a buggy board from then on.

She walks to all the local places - shops, park etc...
I use London buses quite a bit so was worried about getting a double buggy on.

Have got a sling to take out with me in case dd gets too tired and will put baby in sling and dd in pram.

We don't generally go out for long walks etc

....................Get a buggy board or get a double buggy?

It depends on her temperament....my DD was 22 months when baby was born and walked everywhere from a year old. But the tantrums, stubbornness, dawdling, 'helping at shopping', wifeliness and general unreliability hit in the mid twos and many many many times I have been thankful of a double pushchair where I could strap her in. Equally if you just do short trips and trust your DD then I have managed with just reins. Personally I dont like being hunched over a buggy board but plenty of people like them. But its very easy for a child to jump off and if they have a tantrum you are stuck until they are calm enough to carry on. Life is just so much easier with a double! DD is now heading for three and we won't lose a double for a long while yet simply so I can get some shopping done!

Tiggy thanks, some great advice. She was having some awful tantrums a couple of weeks ago (kicking, screaming, rolling on ground in street ones) has been a bit better the past couple of weeks but I am sure there is a lot more to come.
She wears her rucksack with reigns on or holds my hand otherwise without any problem. Has never run off yet but I am very wary and cautious of that - I don't really want to be leaning over something either tbh as I had a bad back for a long time after the birth last time.
The pram I have has an adjustable handlebar that comes quite high up though which is good.

I like to walk quite fast as well so would that be a problem if using a bb?

Dd2 was the type to race off into the sunset at the slightest opportunity so I had a P&T at first when dd3 arrived. Then got a maclaren xt and buggy board after about 9 months and used that almost exclusively after a year. 2 years between DD2 and DD3

I found the buggy board easy and comfortable to use but I am quite tall and the handles on the xt are high.

I'm about average height flyme but the handles do come out quite a long way on the new pram. I'm mostly worried about getting on public transport in London with a double - its bad enough with a single. :(

I think you may struggle with a buggy board if you walk fast. Absolutely honestly, if you can afford a double, buy one. You still have the choice to let DD walk or not. If yiu buy well you should get a chunk of your money back later. My daughter is 99% angel and then can just flip and typically it's been on the occasions we didn't take a double!! I now refuse to go out without one even if she walks a fair bit because at least I have options should the worst happen. It's easy managing one child but harder with two and if you shop, trying to juggle a basket, pushchair, reins with a departing / spinning / self helping toddler on whilst paying is hard!!! We still use a single but we pick the moment (usually when hubby is with us!)

I need to borrow a baby to test out the whole thing! Grin

I can't afford a P and T at the moment having already spent on the single.
The tandems do look quite heavy though. Would I be silly looking at a side by side cheaper one?

I hated our buggy board as you had to stoop to push the chair and I found myself kicking the board constantly as I walked, really reallllllly annoyed me! We had the Lascal one from kiddicare.
In the end we went for a tandem pushchair and getting around london busses wasnt to bad, Ive friends with a twin side by side and they have a really hard time, they dont even fit up the ailse of the regular east london bus!

Have a look at www.bestbuggy.co.uk because there are many more tandems than just the ubiquitous Phil & Teds ;) Also look at the new Mountain Buggy Duet that is as narrow as a tandem but with full sized seats.

:( Jess, They sound like marmite - love em or hate em.
I would imagine they are all fairly similar though? (the bb's)

Ours are 2 years 4 months apart. I walked miles when they were little and wanted to be able to get out and about easily. We bought a Phil and ted's which I loved for pushing but struggled with getting in the car boot (trapped my finger in it every single time I folded it!). We also had a mclaren XT. I bought a second hand buggy board to try out when DD was about 2 months old and DS was about 2.6 and never used P and T again. I loved my buggy board and walked miles with it. DS loved standing on it and I found it easy and nippy to push. Really couldn't have managed without it as DS could never have managed all the walking I did (regularly walked 4 miles with buggy board). Was ace, am all nostalgic for my buggy pushing days now and DS and DD are 8 and 6.

Oh and when P&T was out of action once I did try a sling and toddler in push chair and that killed my back!

I just really don't want to waste any more money - DH will go mad Angry

Maybe I should look out for a SH buggy board first and see how we go and if it doesnt work we will resort to buying a double.

yeh Ivor, I defo think Buggyboards are an acquired taste, but you also have to consider what happens if your eldest is sleeping, tired or ill, theyre not gonna feel like standing on the board for very long.

Totally stealing from the netmums site (i know saying that is like voldermort right) Wink but theres two products on their reviews the bibi strolli rider and the revelo kit sit, both could be worth looking into since your eldest will still be a tempramental toddler!!

While I said I would use the pod,the more I look at it, the more im actually thinking its a fab idea as it folds away really well!!!!!

Just to add I have heard horrific stories of the Buggypod collapsing in the street whilst trying to get up and down the kerbs. Those put me right off! Also bear in mind the Buggypod adds something like 30cms to the width of a pushchair, which makes the average pushchair over 100cms wide which considering an average double is around 75cms is a lot extra.

I did a lot of research on the Strollirider too and almost bought one but someone who is a huge fan of them said it only really works if the child can hold onto some part of the pushchair as the handles are very low. Also buy the latest bucket seat version - and they have stopped making Strolliriders, so Ebay is your friend.

I must say I bought something similar yesterday.
If you look on Ebay at "toddler seat" there are quite a few brands where you can get a toddler seat onto a pushchair. It's definitely an option.

Thanks everyone, I have looked at something similar to the seat - think I saw saw the babydan pram seat - is it like that? The only thing is that it needs to be a traditional flat pram no?
Have seen the buggypod and I'm not too keen on it for reasons above.
I kind of like the kidsit thing but I am guessing it must come out a log way.

Where else could I find a second hand double than ebay?

Definately yes. Double buggys are too difficult to push and bloody heavy to get into a car boot.
The Lascal Buggy board gave me alot of my freedom back, I let ds sit on his with his legs on it as he gets tired standing up for a long amount of time and he is comfortable like that.
It is also great up and down Kirbs.
