House or Flat in Barrhead, Scotland

Hi,
Does anyone know of any decent 2+ bedroom houses or flats to rent in Barrhead, Scotland, that accept pets?

I am looking to move there with my ds within an impossibly tight timeframe and trying to find a place when you have a pet seems to be quite difficult!

My dog is actually quite good in the house in that he does not bark but he does run around with his toys and he likes to look out of the window! In fact in my current house he sits on the window sill and sleeps until I come home!! I have checked with my neighbours and they never hear him at all during the day, bless him!

Also if anyone has any information on areas of the town that I should definitely consider or should definitely avoid I would be grateful!

Thanks!

have you looked on rightmove?
Barrhead is ok. Good sports centre. Easy to get to Glasgow.

Why barrhead?

millymischief · 17/03/2010 23:07

Hi, Yes I have and I am hoping to view a couple this weekend but want as many options as possible.

I have a new job in Glasgow but don't want to live in the city if at all possible - too much of a culture shock after living rurally and I am not a city person! A town is as big as I could stand!

I need somewhere close enough to commute - working 9 - 5 but most playcares and child minders will only work til 6 so I need enough time to get from work to train station and then from train station to wherever my son is by 6 which cuts down the areas I can move to.

I don't know much about any areas in the immediate vicinity of Glasgow so I am working on reccomendations from friends hence Barrhead.

How about Renfrew? Much cheaper than Glasgow.

millymischief · 18/03/2010 16:30

I had not realised Renfrew was a town - thought it was a county! duh!

I will have to check out bus times then as I can't see a train station close enough on the map but I will give that a try.

An estate agent contacted me about a place called Shettleston. It is on the other side from where I want to be but perhaps worth a look.

Though when I mentioned this to my friend I was told that Barrhead was far better and that's not saying much!! I guess it comes down to people's perception and experience... sadly I have none for any of these places!

What about Neilston (2 miles from Barrhead) more rural, good train service, everywhere walkable from station, good schooling feeds into Eastwood High School. Library, Swimming pool etc.

millymischief · 18/03/2010 16:43

Oh right... that is worth a look then. I will go and see if I can find a playcare or childminder and check out housing and travel times too.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I know the area well let me know if I can help. What age is your DS? Are you moving far. Do you want some web link for the local area.

millymischief · 18/03/2010 17:41

My DS is 11. He is in primary 6 so I need a playcare provider too - preferably one attached to the school!

I am 3 hours away from Glasgow and as I work just now it is difficult to be able to fit in a 6 hour return journey to look at areas and property.

Any help would be gratefully received!

I am not being successful in my search for property in Neilston at the moment but I am looking at Eastwood or Thornliebank at the moment.

Not sure if they do rentals but try Barrhead property centre 01418807770 they are very helpful and may be able to point you in the right direction. After School Care

millymischief · 18/03/2010 18:31

Thanks for that seb1 I will try ringing them tomorrow and see if they have anything.

The web link is very helpful thanks, that seems to be exactly what I am looking for!

thanks

How did you get on?

millymischief · 19/03/2010 23:15

Yeah, not too bad. I have a couple of places to look at now.

I am looking at one in Glasgow, one in Barrhead and then I am checking out Bishopton and Paisley too just in case.

Sadly a number of the places I liked won't take dogs or they won't be ready in time for when I need but I will keep trying!

I may have to take time off next week and just travel up during the week... I am sure my current boss will be thrilled with that!!!

Let me know if I can help with info. or anything.

millymischief · 21/03/2010 17:17

Thanks very much!

After a 12 hour driving trip seeing some of the best and worst houses and flats the area has to offer I have finally picked!!

We saw a 3 bedroom two floor flat in Barrhead on Saturday which was lovely. In a quiet area, huge rooms, very bright and airy and lots of storage and we both loved it!

The Glasgow ones were not nice. Either the area was nice but the house was not or the house was lovely but I could not find a cheap enough bullet proof vest and 24 hour bodyguard to cope with the area!

I did really like Bishopton too but could not see inside the house (technical difficulties!!) so rather than put off the decision another week I finally made my decision last night and confirmed it this morning!

I have emailed the estate agents to say I would take the flat, emailed the school and playcare t see about vacancies and set my son off clearing his room of the rubbish he is not taking with us!

I am excited and nervous at the same time as I still don't know anything practical like where the shops are and banks and contemplating moving all of my furniture three hours up the road and then up and down three flights of stairs is a bit concerning but that will all come together in the end!

It kinda has to with only 2 weeks to pack, move and start a new job!

eek!

I'll pull together some info on Barrhead etc if you want, what school is you son going to. Were Barrhead Property Centre any help? Do you have a car that will help with info I give you. Are you able to walk to station?

millymischief · 22/03/2010 23:34

Hi,

That would be great! Thanks so much!!! really grateful

He is going to go to Cross Arthurlie Primary School. I liked that one or St Mark's but can only get playcare for both the morning and afternoon sessions at Cross Arthurlie.

I spoke to the head mistress and I am arranging to take my son for a visit to the school and playcare either Thursday of this week or early next week before the Easter holidays.

I do have a car but when I visit the school I will time the journey from the house, to school and then to the train station to see if I can walk it or if I will have to take the car and leave it at the station each day.

I ended up getting this place through a different estate agency/letting agency actually... I had contacted so many in desperation and ended up driving around for hours at the weekend to see as many as I could and check out as many areas as I could just in case.

Thanks again... I really do appreciate any information you can give me

Cross Arthurlie is a good school from what I hear, station to school is a 5 min walk. Not sure about parking at station. Barrhead is kind of difficult to get around at the moment due to roadworks on Cross Arthurlie Street. You have an HBOS on Main St. RBS and Lloyds TSB on Cross Arthurlie Street. Alpino chip shop on Cross Arthurlie St is good (you may need a quick dinner when you move in). Sports centre on the Main St is good. You have a Tesco in Barrhead, open to 10pm most nights. You are a short drive to Sliverburn with great shops and a big Tesco Extra, Sainsburys is at Darnley and you have Asda in Newton Mearns or Paisley, also a couple of Morrisons in Paisley all about 10 mins drive. If you have good weather in the East hols try Rouken Glen park, if the weather is bad try Xscape at Breahead, also shops for you at Braehead plus Ikea if you need anything for the flat. You have a health centre on the Main St or The Oaks Surgery next to station and near school. Not sure about any of dentists. There is a vet near the town centre. Anything else you want to know about?

seb1 · 23/03/2010 13:28

Oh school shops try

If you are struggling for time you can also order online here Set Schoolwear

seb1 · 23/03/2010 13:32

You probably have already looked here Cross Arthurlie Primary also Sports Centre

millymischief · 23/03/2010 17:59

Thanks Seb.... that is fantastic! I had looked on the school website but did not know about the schoolwear order site so that is really handy as I don't have a lot of time to get a school uniform for my son.

The sports centre looks good too. Little one likes going swimming and I like using the gym - have a membership here so it is good to know that there is one nearby for me to keep using.

Always handy to know about banks and health centres etc and good thinking about the chip shop for moving in day! That will be a long day with packing at this end, driving 3 hours and then unpacking at the other end... a quick take out may be just the ticket!

Thanks for the info on the shops. I can't believe how many supermarkets I will have the choice of! I have to travel 13 miles to a tiny supermarket at the moment so having a choice will be great!

Thanks again.... really kind of you! Very much appreciated!

Anything else you think of just ask.

millymischief · 23/03/2010 18:49

Is there a cinema nearby?

Just a passing musing really. Just trying to think of things that me and little one can do because neither of us will know anyone in the area at all so until we meet new friends he is going to be stuck with me

He should be okay as he makes friends easily... me not so much but I can amuse myself!

Knowing about the park is good though. We will definitely have to visit that

Showcase Paisley & Xscape both 15 mins drive

seb1 · 23/03/2010 19:14

You can have some retail therapy at Sliverburn

midnightexpress · 23/03/2010 19:20

Hi Milly - there are quite a few of us on the Southside of Glasgow so give us a shout on the MN Glasgow local site if you want to meet up. We've got kids of various ages - mine are younger than your DS, but some of the others have older children. Rouken Glen is great - was there this afternoon in fact. We're on the other direction from barrhead from there, but we're over that way quite often.

Good luck with the move.
