So I have decided not to move to Yeovil - what's the verdict on Taunton?

Thanks everyone who replied to my last thread asking about yeovil. Taunton is looking like the place for us - so if you live there or nearby, what do you think? Would you reccomend it to a family with toddlers?

Orm I think I must be a dull little mouse too. I love it here, I've lived here all my life (apart from a year spent travelling) and have no intention of ever moving away. Somerset is in my soul and it has plenty of interest for me (I have no desire for cosmopolitan-ness) so I guess it depends on what floats your boat!

Buda · 15/03/2010 07:33

Hi Orm! Will let you know about house warming party!

We are coming over for a couple of weeks this summer to camp out in the house and plan renovations etc. Looking for recommendations for builders - you mentioned a company a while ago I think. Would you mind emailing me their details at some stage please? Budamn at g mail dot com. Thanks!

I do know what you mean about settling somewhere forever. Moving to London from Dublin at 23 and meeting DH put paid to that for me though. My sisters all live where we grew up and their DCs do things we did as children. My DS does too when we go back. But our life is different. Dh has no family ties other than DS and I. I have but for various reasons we have decided not to live in Ireland. So Somerset is to settle down and for DS's education. If he choosesto stay in Somerset when he finishes his education well and good depending on what he does and where he ends up I would rather be close to him than stay in Somerset I think.

OrmRenewed · 15/03/2010 09:21

Will find the details and get back to you

Buda · 15/03/2010 09:39

Thanks Orm. No rush.

Moosy · 15/03/2010 12:19

Buda, we're doing a barn conversion at the moment so I've emailed you the details of the builders we've used.

Buda · 15/03/2010 12:23

Oh thanks Moosy!

Buda · 15/03/2010 12:28

Moosy meant to say earlier that we looked at a house in NC in October. Right in middle - town farm something I think.

Dh lived in NC for a few years - his parents owned the post office.

OliviaMumsnet · 15/03/2010 12:31

Obviously problem with taunton is that that morningpaper lives there

OrmRenewed · 15/03/2010 12:35

Oh beleive me I treat Taunton with caution these days. Walk round with a weather eye out for a scary, well-groomed MNer.

bratnav · 15/03/2010 12:36

I am a Bristol girl and lived in Taunton for a year 2 years ago for DHs work, the commute from Bristol to Taunton in rush hour can be 90 minutes each way so we moved.

It is lovely and big enough for stuff to do with DCs, we could drive for 10 mins and be in the countryside which our dogs loved. Walks along the canal are nice, bunnies galore

Although I didn't really enjoy my time there I think this was more due to the fact that I went from FT working single Mum to SAHM with a DP which was a heck of a lifestyle shift I can tell you! PT work appeared to be quite thin on the ground, FT work market seems ok.

It's a really lovely place for families I think.

Buda · 15/03/2010 12:39

Moosy - thanks again - I know who you are now that I have checked my email!!

OliviaMN - there is that! But every town has it's oddities! I am looking on bright side that I will have a readymade wine drinker to party with.

morningpaper · 15/03/2010 13:03

woo wooooo

OrmRenewed · 15/03/2010 13:16

OK, that'll make it easier to spot you then MP.

Buda · 15/03/2010 13:22

Not many naked people running through town then Orm? How disappointing.

OrmRenewed · 15/03/2010 13:33

No. Taunton is too strait-laced. Come to Bridgie for general wierdness

Buda · 15/03/2010 13:55

Will do! Do you fit in well there then???

OrmRenewed · 15/03/2010 13:58

Oh yes!

morningpaper · 15/03/2010 14:18

I have streaked across the cricket pitch (only the small one, not the county one)

OrmRenewed · 15/03/2010 14:21

The one next to the toddler's play area ?

morningpaper · 15/03/2010 14:52

yep

it was dark

I was worried I might trip over a badger TBH

Beetroot · 15/03/2010 14:55

Bridgewater is really not at all nice
some villages around it that are nice though - the Plodens for example

frome is really lovely these days - very arty, theatres, cinemas etc.

Taunton is perfectly fine - nothing special though imo

EcoMouse · 15/03/2010 15:09

Where is this Bridgewater, of which you speak?

Moosy · 15/03/2010 15:22

Just up the road from Taunton, hiding behind Bridgwater

Themasterandmargaritas · 15/03/2010 16:43

Another reason not to live in Bridgie, no fecker can ever spell it properly.

lol at tripping over a badger. See Sushi, there is great night life in Taunton already.

Cadelaide · 15/03/2010 17:02

Bridgwater has a lovely shop.
