If you had a job in Eastleigh where would you live?

We are relocating in the summer and I have my heart set on moving to Fordingbridge. But DH is interested in a teaching job in Eastleigh so I'm now looking at the surrounding area for good places to live a bit nearer to there. DC are 8&5 so good primary schools are essential. Chandlers Ford has cropped up but I can't find a really good primary school (though I'm sure they must exist!) Any recommendations? We're moving from Manchester so will already be downsizing which counts out Winchester.

Oh dear. I lived in Eastleigh (admittedly a while back pre children) I thought it was awful.

Cyb · 14/01/2010 19:55

Oh but now I see you don;t actually want to live there....

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 14/01/2010 19:56

There was a post about primary schools in winchester (which are generally v good) earlier this week.

TabithaTwitchet · 14/01/2010 20:06

I do have a job in Eastleigh - and live in Basingstoke (which I would not necessarily reccomend )
If we could afford it, I would love to live in Winchester, or Alresford.

Dumbledoresgirl · 14/01/2010 20:10

Winchester, where I was brought up and to which I hope to return one day.

But if you can't afford it, how about Romsey?

moodlum · 14/01/2010 20:11

I used to live near southampton and I went to school in Winchester. If you have to discount Winchester, there are some nice villages on the way to winch from eastleigh - such as hursley or twyford. Pricey, but perhaps less so than winch.

Southampton isn't brilliant. Romsey, I don't really know about, but might be worth a try. All round the back of Chandlers Ford, I can't remember the area - its all wooded and seems nice. Depends what you want.

moodlum · 14/01/2010 20:12

Sorry to hijack - dg - did you go to school in winch?

RolandButter · 14/01/2010 20:13 far away as poss?

fordingbridge very dull

winch very £££

Dumbledoresgirl · 14/01/2010 20:14

Moodlum, yes, though in the 1970s and early 80s so I cannot necessarily comment on the schools now.

Dumbledoresgirl · 14/01/2010 20:15

Oh I see you were local too Moodlum. I thought you were going to ask me about the schools now! I am guessing you went to PSC?

MrsDinky · 14/01/2010 20:15

Waltham Chase. Less expensive than some of the surrounding bits but still nice.

moodlum · 14/01/2010 20:16

Yes i did . And before that the girls school on the hill.

Dumbledoresgirl · 14/01/2010 20:17

Girls school on hill? Can you email me [email protected]

Dumbledoresgirl · 14/01/2010 20:24

Or not of course if you don't want to. It is just that depending on your age, I can only think of one girls school and I went there (unless you are older than me in which case you might have been at another school with my sister). I am only intrigued to know which - not trying to discover your identity!

Dumbledoresgirl · 14/01/2010 20:25

Ah no, thinking of another school now (lol, I am making Winchester sound like a huge metropolis!) Were you a private school girl?

moodlum · 14/01/2010 20:29

I've emailed you. I was a private school girl. We drove past the school buildings the other day, and DH said - "it looks more like a lunatic asylum than a school". Which is true.

Sorry for the hijack all..

moodlum · 14/01/2010 20:30

Sorry OP, you could also try Bishops Waltham and surrounding area - that's really nice.

Dumbledoresgirl · 14/01/2010 20:33

Was also going to suggest Bishops Waltham. And Wickham (is that the right name? can now only think of the character in Pride and Prejudice!)

Sidge · 14/01/2010 20:41

Bishops Waltham
Waltham Chase

I don't know about any of the schools but they are all quite nice areas.

chicaguapa · 14/01/2010 20:43

Thanks. That is all a big help. I am looking at Bishops Waltham now. Nice infant and junior schools and chocolate box houses.

IME eastleigh is hideous
it depends really on the style of property you like

chicaguapa · 14/01/2010 20:48

Yeah, I'm not considering Eastleigh. Just looking for somewhere nice to live that's easy to commute there.

OP posts:
Pennies · 14/01/2010 20:50

Colden Common
Bishops Waltham

aseriouslyblondemoment · 14/01/2010 20:51

chandlers ford not much better tbh
i lived in romsey but this was pre-dcs so i can't give up to date schools info sadly
but that's a gorgeous little town with some stunning tho pricey property
hamble is also lovely if you're keen on boats lol

purplehat · 14/01/2010 20:53

I worked in Eastleigh.

If I were you I would look to live around the Fareham area- Whiteley is a nice new, modern village. There is also Titchfield, older more traditional properties.

It would be about a 15 minute drive form there at a guess
