what colour carpets do you have...

If you do indeed have carpets at all in

a) your bedroom
b) your DCs bedroom(s)
c) the hallway

How did you decide? was it based on the wall colour, or was the wall colour based on your carpet colour?

Also, do you think that all bedrooms off the hallway should match in colour? Or is matching out?

Do you think having a bright child like colour such as red in a child's bedroom is not the 'done' thing these days?

What colour carpets are more 'neutral' but not beige?

We have same carpet through stairs, landing and bedrooms. No carpet downstairs.

Boring beige. But I wouldn't have a colour as such.

We have cream carpets in living room and bedrooms, and a flecky mid-brown on the stairs and landing.

We had the whole house done at once, and it wasn't based on the room colours (which are all different).

We did have a bright red carpet in the first child's room we decorated, but that was 2 houses ago.

we have pale cream in all the rooms except bathrooms and kitchen.

I would love to put some bright coloured carpet in DS's rooms but DH won't hear of it.

Only on teh landing and stairs - cream. Stupid colour to have in a house, here before we moved in, childless couple before.

In rooms I wouldn't have carpets at all, don't like them.

mary does it look good though? I personally would like the same all throughout the place, but DH does not. And we are getting more hardwearing in the hallway than the bedrooms, and the prices are different. Bedroom is a price without underlay, and the hallway is a price per sqm inc underlay etc. Although I am sure we would get a reduction if we chose no underlay on that carpet for the bedroom.

I have never bought carpets before. Its all very new. I would like to be brave and bold, but fear I will go for neutral as its a lot of money to make a mistake on.

We have neutral everywhere. (some would say it's beige with flecks )
Last house had different colours in each room and I just think this looks better, more unified and spacious.

Plush red looked lovely in our hallway after hoovering. But, twas lovely big hall and landing and dust and stuff showed up.

Wish I could remember where I got my samples from. Lush neutrals..maybe natural carpet co or something. Got samples and chose then found closest cheaper alternative.

deb - I agree we would prefer wooden floors too, but can't afford to do it throughout, and i dislike laminate with a passion. We have wooden floored front room, which is not going to be carpeted at least.

Now I like cream in the bedroom, we have it now, but both DH and I are a little clumsy, and we have a boisterous 3yo and another on the way, there have been more than one cup of coffee knocked off the sides onto the cream in our current bedroom and its now a dreadful patchy dirty colour. Shame as it was a lovely carpet.

We have beige throughout the upstairs (not bathroom). I think it is far better to do that and add colour to children's rooms in other ways.

Does it look good????? Of course! I chose it!

It just looks, well, neutral really. I'm not over fond of carpet either but had to have them for various reasons.

i've still to decorate our bedroom and at least I can go for almost any colour scheme I fancy because the floor is neither here nor there.

Pavlov don't skrimp on the underlay.. it is worth it... it will extend the life of your carpet!

Woo you mean you think that the same throughout looks better?

I was thinking, either same throughout, or bedrooms one colour (all the same) hallway another?

Thing is, DH really dislikes matching anything. His idea of what looks good is not the same as mine, and who is to say its right, my way? (apart from me? ).

But then he does not see any difference between b&q paint and Crown.

Our neutral has lots of little flecks on it with darker colours. Not bad at all at hiding marks as they all blend in but it still looks clean.

Most stains have come out easily too.
Have you thought about getting rugs to protect certain areas?

Same throughout really will make the house seem bigger.

I think the problem is, we have to do the whole of our flat, apart from the front room, which includes the new loft conversion, the stairs from that, and the stairs down to our entrance. So it is going to cost as it is.

The only rooms that will not have underlay is are the two big bedrooms and the small spare room. hallway will def have underlay. The builder, the carpet man and DH all say we do not need underlay in the loft conversion due to it being a brand new floor, fully insulated etc etc. 3:1 not good odds for winning.

I wouldn't scrimp on the underlay either. Are you going to an Allied Carpets type place or a smaller local company? The former charge a bloody fortune for their underlay - I think that's where they make their money. We were charged half the price at a local company which meant we could spend more on the carpet. Got a much better deal.

stripet carpets are very in arent they
have different typtes of the same colour - eg less wool more poly on hard wear areas and more wool in bedroom

woo yes we have, that is what we will do with the new carpets, along with buying japanese slippers for our guests and providing a big wicker basket for shoes to go in .

Sage green - that is the colour that I would like, especially for our bedroom. But not sure DH will go with that throughout the place

Tell them good underlay will make a cheap carpet seem like better quality. Otherwise it will be hard underfoot. Like student accommodation...

MrsKrabs - yes that sounds like a good idea. Same colours different textures. I like the idea of hessian textures in the hallway.

mary thats what I often to say to DH as an argument for more expense rather than cheap!!! - if we do it like this, it will look like student accommodation! (i say it when he leaves jars off things, or does not put things away after himself too!).

Mary - our builder recommended a really good local company. He was quoted £1500 for a carpet at allied and this guy came in at £600 for same carpet including underlay and fitting.

What he has shown us for hallway is a price including the underlay and fitting, and he has shown us the underlay it will come with and said it is a good middle priced underlay. He also showed us a cheap carpet for the bedrooms, but does not come with underlay so this would be extra cost. However, the bedrooms without underlay came in much less that I was expecting so i am thinking, if we went for the one with underlay all throughout we might be able to stretch to that - he said it was a good all round carpet, not too pricey, but not cheap in quality either.

I'd have green all way through as I could cope with lots of green rooms but would get bored.

We've had the carpets for 5 years now and I've been able to chnge colour schemes very easily (much to dh re-painting annoyance!)

I do like the same colour all way through. Perhaps because this house is smaller and I don't think lots of darker chopped up colours would suit this house.
